Here's an idea: a tagged Instagram is more than just a photo.
Sure, Instagram is pretty awesome, but it's even more #INTERESTING than you think! The hashtag, so simple and ubiquitous, raises the image from mere photo to a new complex entity. An extension of the social media aspect of the Instagram app, the hashtag enhances searchability and allows connection to a variety of communities. Some tags can definitely be redundant or even useless, but the right ones can add context, greater meaning to the picture, and chronicle our changing relationship to Photography!!!

Recent subscriber - this is now my favourite channel! I can see that adding a # could add another layer, and hence some greater depth, to a photo, but only if the # adds something more complex than a simple description and allows the viewer to see another perspective, as it were. I showed this video to a friend and she, after saying that she thought you were annoying (sorry), argued that a # actually removes a layer from a photo as it forces someone else's thoughts on the viewer.

I actually taught a session in a computer mediated communication course about this. Hashtags are quite simply a key to a hidden community. Some people drop information into the keyhole, others use the tags to enter it and communicate with those of a similar nature.

I've actually made friends because of tags. You tag, someone likes, you check out their profile, you decide to follow, maybe they follow you, you comment, you chat, you develop a friendship... all because you uploaded a picture and tagged it for someone else to see. It's happened several times for me.

Lets not forget the fact that hashtags are super useful for organising the wealth of information, not just on instagram but on twitter as well. The best part is the authors do it for you.

This is why I wish this kind of discussion took place in the era in which ytmnd was still relevant. The format of image + audio + tacky, zooming text created a fascinating community that created some really novel and wonderful uses for these somewhat restrictive elements.

I know that a lot of people say this, but it never ceases to amaze me that these videos actually have intelligent comments, when so many others are just plain spammy. Any idea whether that's because even the spammers actually can't help but be interested. Sorry if this unrelated, I just wanted to say that.

One might argue the point that you are really just talking about context, in which sense, hashtags are not the only medium. I think that writing a small comment about the picture you post, say, "I took this the other day at the park with some friends and I didn't use a instagram filter" gives much more context and information to the picture than would otherwise be gotten from a hashtag. I enjoyed the video immensely, as always. Thanks for making thought provoking videos.

I'm not an instagram user, but as someone who spends a lot of time on tumblr, tags have evolved into a type of communication. It's treated kind of like whispers between friends and sometimes is the joke. From personal experience, when someone reblogs art of mine, I go to their blog and see what they said in the tags. Oftentimes peoples' true opinions and characters are revealed in the tags, and not in the post itself. It something I really enjoy about tumblr.

Oh i agree completely. The one of Neil Armstrong was by far the most galling. Hashtags undeniably give definition to things, but also by defining things one way, they take away from all the other meanings that it could mean. A picture is worth a thousand words, hashtags themselves filter what those words are.

Well congrats on the 200k subs. You deserve them :D Also, I never gave it much thought, but the picture on the moon tagged "#Travel" really blew my mind. A superficial word meaning kind of the same thing to anyone applied to something so grand and mindbogglingly impressive as going to the moon adds layers. Not only does it somehow make the thought of being on the moon itself seem much bigger, bringing regular travel into comparison, but it also tells you something about the person tagging.

Imagine if you went to MoMA and saw a really out there surrealist painting - you had no idea what to make of it but next to it was a small plaque with 10-15 adjectives and adverbs that the artist included. It may not explain exactly what was going through their mind, but it many give some good reference points for context and meaning.
@WillKinchlea
@WillKinchlea 11 лет назад
Absolutely - by applying hashtags, you can instill abstract concepts into the photo, suffusing the photo with irony or cynicism, for example. The message or meaning (the art of it) of the 'photo' becomes much more focused, at times put on rails, since you can't often forget those tags when looking at the picture. It's almost as if, at times, the photo is servant to the hashtag.

I got this: Swag is anything that you are using to show off the fact that you have obtained large amounts of currency in the past or are able to do so at whim. Swag can also be used as an adjective (for example: That is so swag) to describe something that is good or something that one should be proud of. Swag (the noun), when used correctly, is supposed to attract a mate of the desired gender or attention of any sort. Another potential use is the collection of even more swag. BAM.

The funniest thing is, on tumblr, the tag essay. As it implies, this is when people actually use the tags as a sort of caption box in and of itself. It seems to facilitate reblogging without being bogged down by previous commentary as tags don't follow even if captions do. This gets especially funny if the post in question is a quote or short paragraph, and the tags go on for....quite some time.
@drawsdakcab

I think tags can serve one of two purposes; either giving context or defining. The first frames how the photo should be viewed and gives it a story. The second limits the meaning of a photo by asking the viewer to essentially use a mental filter on how they interpret it.

Tags are genres. -Genres categorize media and make it more discoverable. -Applying an unexpected genre to media (as this show has been known to do) can enrich both media and genre. -Genres are useful, disposable, and reader-centric.

Any hashtags applied to a photo absolutely change the context, and subsequently how the photo is viewed. I've never used instagram, but I see this every day on reddit. The main differentce is that reddit has 2 references for meaning (the subreddit and the link title), where as instagram has 1. The few words that are attached are as important as the image itself. Also, ONLY 200,000 subscribers? I guess Idea Channel is still one of the internet's best kept secrets. I expect that to change.

I think it's interesting when people use hashtags to separate themselves from the "herd" by using obscure and absurd hashtags. For example, taking a picture of a sunset and hashtagging #typicalinstagramsunsetpic or something along those lines. It's almost a way of using the conformity to protest the act of conforming. By the way, I have recently discovered this channel and am utterly obsessed. I think I've been watching episodes for at least an hour. Keep up the good work!

I hardly use Instagram so my experience with tags is mainly based on tumblr. And there I love reading the tags of posts because they have some other information in them than the text/photo/chat. In the tags you kind of express yourself differently because they don't 'survive' for ever while the text you add does. So you can tell your own followers how you feel about it but if they don't feel the same way they can still reblog it because it won't be with your post.

One of the draw backs of community hashtags is that often times it makes finding things difficult across different communities, because someone may not be able to find consistent results with typical search strategies. I think that instagram's encouragement of multiple hashtags is a good thing for findability, but not necessarily better than using a more controlled vocabulary.
@cschlens
@cschlens 11 лет назад
Tags also serve the purpose of increasing the reach of your photograph to a larger audience. I have a friend who uses them to get more likes. He says that they aren't all created equal. Some tags draw more viewers than other but mass quantity is usually an effective strategy. It's amazing to me that this mechanic even works on instagram considering that there's no ability to subscribe to tags you like. The "audience" is comprised of people specifically browsing that tag "in the moment".
@Pratchettgaiman
@Pratchettgaiman 11 лет назад
As a Library and Information Science student, I have been doing research on tagging (not so much Instagram tagging, more Delicious, LibraryThing, and Flickr) as a organizing tool as opposed to controlled vocabularies. Tagging allows people or communities to construct their own meanings without having to conform to top-down definitions from organizations like the Library of Congress. This can result in increased accuracy, but also useless tags or ones that are redundant.

In that example "Smells like Teen Spirit" does not change the interpretation of the song, but there are level of interpretation built into that title. At the base level, it's identity "Smells like Teen Spirit" is on MTV." At a deeper level, it positions you in a memory. You remember the first time you heard the song. I think it's fair to argue they are separate. The experience of listening to the song with the emotional weight associated with it is different than the "flash" memory of the name.

This reminds me of the use of tags on Tumblr. Normally, tags there are used to continue the joke or the conversation of the post, not necessarily to draw attention to the post itself. I'm not intimate with Instagram, but a classic view of art is the use of images and symbols to incite conversation. If we are arguing that Instagram is art, then perhaps hashtags, depending on how you use them, are less about garnering attention than they are about directly stimulating conversation.

Don't know much about instagram, but I find the use of tags on tumblr even more interesting than the examples used on this video. There, people will often go even further into commentary on a post, or perhaps they'll comment -only- in tags, as if the use of tags were somehow slightly more private. I see it as a kind of Shakespearean monologue sort of thing - everyone can hear/read, but it isn't a conversation, isn't inviting response. Except then, of course, people -do- reply. Also in tags.

Looking at it mainly from an artistic standpoint, there's something to be said for both sides. A picture without tags has that sort of magic that comes with knowing and interpreting a piece of art without being explicitly told what's going on, and also leaves room for multiple interpretations. But with tags, communication can be more direct, and extra context can add extra dimensions or even completely change the scope of the picture. Also, first youtube post woot!

The interesting thing about tags with instagram is that they aren't confined to just that one site. Things like tumblr, twitter and facebook all use tags to collate information into specific 'themes'. It's interesting to think that there is probably some kind of universal 'TAG PLACE' where everything is brought together under the same tags regardless of original upload site.
@DandilionFireworks

On one level I think tags are just a way of labeling a thing so that it can be easily found by those who are looking for it (for example, someone looking for a picture of mountains would search the mountain tag because that's how people label pictures of mountains). At the same time, the tags people choose for their photos say something about what the most relevant part of the image is to them. Like maybe there's a goat on the mountain and they put it under the goat tag but not under mountains.

I really liked the bit about "cyber text." It made me think of Magritte's "this is not a pipe image" and how it all tied in together. What I think is worth considering though is a situation where a cyber text adds meaning that make you do a double take, like with Craig-Martin's "An Oak Tree" where suddenly a glass of water takes on new meaning or makes you ponder about some things deeply. The real challenge though is making something thought provoking with only hashtag length cyber text

I think that while Instagram is a good example of the continued liberation of the masses to use various forms of expression with little expenditure, It is also taking away from the artistic meaning of photography and making it more two dimensional by using tags to communicate meaning and subtexts in the photo rather than using composition, content and technique as all of the photographic masters have in the past.

My perspective, which I absolutely did not even come close to making because I was lazy, is that for some reason, Instagram, and Instagrams hashtags seem to be the most "like-baiting" of all the social medias. When a person uses hashtags to gain likes it is an active choice, a tweet or tumblr poster is more likely to use hashtags simply to organize (or to make jokes). But that's just how I feel.

As we get further into the technological future I think that hashtags will become more more important. With thousands of cameras on every event in human history going forward it will become more important to categorize such events. Granted there may be news articles and videos but honestly nothing captures the disaster like the raw camera lens of somebody caught in it.

Something I think is unique about the instagram tagging system is the weekly "holidays" of sorts. #mancrushmonday, #womancrushwednesday, #throwbackthursday, etc kind of contribute to instagram as a culture all its own. A bunch of people use them or know they exist, but I don't think anybody actually searches those tags for content.

I usually skim tags because sometimes (most times of tumblr) hashtags are like muttering under your breath on the Internet. Reading someone's commentary connects more to how they felt when they saw/made/posted whatever. If its just a bunch of descriptors of what's in the picture I usually ignore it.

G.W. Sebald writes that "we lose all sense of reality to the precise degree to which we are engrossed in our own work....knowing that we shall never be able to fathom the imponderables that govern our course through life". An instagram gives us an easy way to create our own work and doing so gives us meaning. It is the process - or at least the pseudo-process - of creation that makes it more than a photo, it acts as a way for us to forget the fact that we can never 'fathom the impoderables'.

Hashtags can be a way to say "Hey I care about these things, pay attention to me" when in fact that might not be true. With no validation, hashtags become an easy way for someone to become Instafamous without actually doing anything... fame worthy. Professional photographers don't use hashtags on their photographs but still reach a massive audience and get actual famous. You know, the good kind.

I always figured that more literal forms of art were seen as less deep or meaningful that ambiguous art forms. Even though I feel that isn't necessarily the case, a lot of artists seem to think explicit meaning detracts from a work of art. It's why words like "illustrative" often carry negative connotations amongst some groups of artists. It's also pretty evident in art history, which seems to get more abstract and less literal in order to find some deeper meaning.

I'm a librarian and a lot of libraries are working on digitising their photographic collections now. This involves creating metadata for images allowing users to search for them. Of course, that often involves guesswork or incomplete data, so if people are encouraged to give extra data about their images at the point of creation, - beyond the exif data embedded in the image, then that's far more helpful for future research instead of some interpretation.

EXCELLENT video! I was JUST thinking about the art of hastagging this morning. As much as I understand the community outreach appeal of multiple instagram hashtags, I irks me when there are more than 2 for a specific picture. Especially when they are just different versions of the same idea (fitness and healthy lifestyle accounts are particularly guilty of this: #cleaneating and #healthyeating are the same thing!!!)

I can't find it now, but some awesome linguistics person on tumblr analyzed the language used on tumblr and it's actually really cool how differently emotion is expressed and how much the tag system influences it (eg the "no two identical tags" rule produces this t h i s thisssssss). If tags add different/additional context to an image, surely they are in the same category as titles, subtexts, footnotes, artist statements, captions, etc. Tags are like titles because they can be simply organizational like Chopin's Prelude in E-Minor (op.28 no. 4) or convey deeper meaning like Catcher in the Rye. However, tags have the added benefit of categorizing your photo with others like it, whether or not the content of those photos is similar.

It's like when watching television shows people can have their own interpretations as to the show itself as to who the character wants/likes/how the character feels. It would be like if the director told you, you were supposed to feel a certain way, the character is this and nothing else, leaving out any room for any audience opinion.

Hashtags may indeed contribute to an Instagram photo in that it gives you some insight into the mindset of the person who took it. However, it may also detract from the image in that they tell you what to think about it rather than letting the images speak for themselves. Which is something fine art photography frequently does to great effect.

My perspective is that hashtags add context to a photo. Many photos (e.g. moon landing, twin towers, sailor kiss in times square) get most of their significance from the cultural and/or historical context. Hashtags just allow a photographer to immediately document aspects of the context. In some ways this is more restrictive for the audience, as it can bias the perspective of the photo. In other ways it is enlightening, giving us understanding of why the photo was taken.

I agree that tags add a deeper layer of meaning and story behind a picture. But then again, sometimes a picture on its own will speak a thousand words (or tags). Perhaps tagging all our photos is also limiting our imagination, restricting what we can infer and guess from the photo by blatantly just telling us what that photo means or you are trying to say. Famous art pieces didn't have any tags and we are still awed by them. Also, some people freaking tag wayyyyy too much to a picture!

When I take a photo of my best friend, in our mutual best friend's living room... only we can truly feel the significance of it. Tagging it and making it globally available takes away that personal connection. There is also a whole aspect of using tags to thread photos under a subject known to a very small group of friends, and even on a personal basis as a means of categorization. I feel that a hashtag is not so much a forced interpretation of the image but rather the hashtag has developed into a nonchalant way of expressing your feeling at the moment of submission. It is almost like a social cue similar to emotional crying and blushing in the aspect that it is used to communicate with others how you are feeling without having to be in direct contact with an individual. I find this to be especially true in the hashtag's encroachment upon the nature of texting.

Thank you for elaborating on this! I am fairly new to tumblr, so I never quite understood the subleties of commenting in tags versus regular text.

Here's an idea - why don't you do a behind-the-scenes episode? Talk about how you come up with topics, how you find all of your clips, memes, images, etc. Talk about how you edit, show some bloopers, show us your rehearsal process, introduce us to your camera guy. I'd love to see all of that!

I see hashtags as a form of metadata. While the quality of the hashtags can vary among users, the hashtags describes some aspect of the Instagram photo.

Titles to paintings or other works of art (often modern or post-modern) tend to have the same effect as a hashtag as they can completely change your view on the piece of art.

Without tags you have to take in much more of the photo to find meaning in it. When tags give you an intended meaning up front, they take away from complex and personal meaning. What's really interesting is that the complexities of the image that still register with the viewer influence the meaning of the tag. The evolution of the meaning of "swag" from stolen goods and walking confidently to whateverthehell it is now has been dictated almost entirely by its use as a hashtag.

Of course it is, for example just one word in a tweet explains the entire tweet but it only makes sense if it's a hash tag.

I always thought no filter was people just posting randomness or way too many hashtags, because the person has " no filter". Oh well, you learn something new every day.

On Tumblr, I use hashtags 1) as a secondary or primary commenting are, and 2) in order to inform other people where the content came from. I reblog a lot of fan art from stuff I like, and I like it when a tag indicates where that's from. Favorite tags include #Homestuck, #Adventure Time, and #Puella Magi Madoka Magica.

Photographs have always been more than just a picture. Look at any family photograph and there is likely something written on the back or on the album page: year, place, persons pictured. Or consider a photo in a newspaper/magazine/online, rarely are they presented without some type of written explanation. Hashtags are just another way of presenting context, with the added bonus of also being a way to search for specific content.
