Here's an idea: Game Of Thrones owes its success to piracy.
If you're like us, you LOVE Game of Thrones. But if you're also like us, you may not, technically, have... cable. So how are we seeing this amazing show on HBO, which is stuck behind a pay wall? A huge amount of viewers (not us of course, no no no) are downloading the show illegally. But despite being the most pirated show of 2012, the Game of Thrones DVDs are top sellers, breaking HBO's own sales records!! Could it be that piracy is actually HELPING the show?!

Piracy has convinced me more to buy a product more than an single piece of advertisement. Seriously. I've watched s series, and if I liked it, I purchased it. Same with movies and gaming. In fact, for gaming, there was a long time where I would pirate, play, buy. In an age of advertising that doesn't help, deceitful demos and game critics on the take... the only thing I have left to trust is my own experience. So yeah, pirating has led me to buy more games than any advertizing could ever expect to. But this is because the industry is run by business and marketing people... and not gamers...

This is it in a nutshell. Our marketing strategies have actually started to make people NOT buy things. How the hell is a minute long video of people playing in the snow then flashing a bag of chips showing how awesome your chips are? If ads actually you know, DEMONSTRATED THEIR PRODUCT, there would be less piracy. Better yet, make piracy legal. Digital copies are 100% free! You like it, you paypal some bucks their way, pay what you feel it is worth to you.

Piracy helps generate positive word of mouth, and buzz is a key to making any television show popular. Even if a pirate doesn't purchase products, they provide a service by advertising the show to friends and family.

Breaking Bad creator Vince Gilligan once said that Netflix has really helped Breaking Bad grow in popularity. Even though Netflix doesn't count as piracy, but it shares similar advantages where it is an accessible product although Netflix costs money it is still quite affordable for most people.

The world at large needs to realize that the vast majority of all pirates download things for free because we are poor and actually cannot afford to blow 60 bucks on a new video game if it turns out to be crap (and they often do). Thus, the media is downloaded viewed, and appraised. If its loved, it is often bought, if its hated its deleted. The act of piracy is only threatening if you assume that nerds will not give money to you after tying out your product compleatly unrestricted for free. Which we usually will if we like it. Piracy can be thought of as a "Personal Value Evaluation Process" for determining if your thing is worth my cash. If we reorganized the market to maek digital copies compleatly free ligitimantly it would not actualy end the industry, it would help it! Amazing things can be done via donation, jsut look at the things we have kickstarted! We are happy to give you money for more of something we know we like or even jsut as a thank you for the entertainment. In a world like this the only diffrence would be that entertainers would need to step up their game and make sure that what they produced was, you know, actually good because they could not scam people out of money with a crappy at the core but outwardly interesting looking film.

Not to mention: no game company makes a demo these days and even the ones that do make the demos, they only show the good bits and when you get the game it gives a bitter taste because the good parts are only 10% of the game and the other 90% are dissapointing.
@MeepChangeling
@MeepChangeling 10 лет назад
DJ Soru Yeah. The industry and consumers would greatly benefit from a reworking of the base way they sell things. But no one will do this because humans are moronic slaves to tradition.
@CharlieHofigan

If all media relied purely off of donation I don't think the industry would stay afloat for very long. Yes, maybe people that want whatever the product is badly enough to pirate it would be willing to give their money to the creators, but the majority of the populous would just take their product and not give anything back. Think about it: if you go to the grocery store and find, for instance, that they are giving out free apples, you are not going to pay them for it. You'll just take your apples and leave.

To clarify an important point that was muddied in this episode, downloading media without permission isn't "stealing"; it's copying, because the act of copying media doesn't remove or limit another person's access to that media. Copying, quite ironically, has much *harsher* penalties than theft in the U.S. and Canada. It's also why, despite their huge spending on propaganda suggesting that downloading is theft, *none* of the court cases brought about by the RIAA or MPAA have charged anyone with theft: there are reasonable limitations on the penalties for theft of goods under $5000, whereas the penalties for copying are absolutely absurd and debilitating, to the point where almost no middle-class individual could possibly ever pay the fines.

Most torrenters I have talked to buy a lot of media and use downloading/streaming as a way to... test the waters. Who wants to buy something without knowing they'll like it. And yeah, I'm pretty sure there a quite a few shows that owe piracy for their level of success. Who'll support something they can't risk that much money on a maybe. People torrent, they find out what they like, they support it. It's the way things should be, in my opinion.

as a book nerd and a broke student. I need to pirate books before deciding to buy them. I will pay no money for a piece of garbage which I will not read again. Books are an investments and they need to be of high quality for me to go out of my way to buy them. so I think if a creator is good at making at making his products, he'll probably will have people buy them with no care of piracy, in fact it'll help.

Piracy may speed up the growth of the fanbase, while not free, is going to be a profit in the long run. Attacking piracy will not only anger fans but also slow down the growth of the fanbase. A lot of hardcore fans will end up paying more for merchandise than they would for the DVD's. Guilt or a will to support the developers can be strong emotions to fans.

the consumer is not protected. If for example i could get my money back when i see a bad movie i might go to the movies. I would never pay for a movie i know nothing about, so being able to see it for free might encourage me to see it in a cinema. Ofc if u look at it the other way around people could go to a movie lie and get their money back if this was the practice. I am not saying piracy is providing consumer protection for all who download pirated content, but since movie reviews are not up to our standard of criticism (dont get me started on videogames where criticism is bought by game developers) its their own damn fault so many of us go to piracy. They try to screw us over to make more money and piracy is our answer. So its not that piracy helps the product its that piracy might be helping the product if the product is good

I pirate half of everything but that's only because I don't have the money to pay for it. I pay for music and stuff as often as I can. I have so much respect for many of the musicians and artists and directors and developers. Most of them put so much work into their content and they've earned every cent they squeeze out of my dusty wallet.

Yup. I download GoT. Then I buy the blurays. Their blurays have enough extra content and are well enough put together for me to put my money down. I support media I think is worth it but I don't want to wait. GoT airs months later where I live from the original air date. Why the hell would I want to wait? Space channel here in Canada figured that out right quick. They used to air Doctor Who two weeks after it aired in the UK. I didn't want to wait. Neither did anyone else I know. Now it airs same day and I watch it on my tv commercials and all. It's 2013. Waiting can be a liability.

I've been working along side the cable industries for half a decade and I can tell you for certain: They have absolutely no clue how to deal with piracy or over-the-top video in general. Like in any business, building high entry barriers is the only way they can fight cord-cutting. HBO fits into all this by being the only reason to subscribe to cable - and thus helping cable companies maintain their advantage. My forecast is that inevitably, they will have to succumb. Piracy, then, acts to catalyze this change, and hopefully bring a more efficient commercial channel between content creators and their fans.

Nintendo took a hit with the n64 and the Gamecube because of how hard their games were to pirate. Whereas Sony and Microsoft made a bit more because their systems were easier to pirate and therefore more attractive to buyers.

TvSonic Serbia That's a very different failure, the Dreamcast was expensive and SEGA didn't have much brand integrity after the Mega Drive/Genesis add ons and the SEGA Saturn, plus during the time of the Dreamcast I doubt many people would have known about pirating in general. It wasn't until early in the reign of the PS2 and Xbox did many people find out that you could pirate games.

I know pirating made me support things I love more. My prime example: Megamind, I thought I wouldn't like this movie so I downloaded it rather than committing money to the theater. After I did I was so hooked that I bought nearly twenty movie tickets for myself and friends to see it in theaters. If I hadn't pirated this movie I would not have seen it until it hit Netflix and I wouldn't have invested any money in its theatrical release.

I watch it streamed online for free, because I cant justify pay-tv for one show, but I will always buy it on bluray when it is released a year later. They still make money off me. The same amount they'd make if I just wait a year. Since I will buy the discs, it seems less bad than if I stream it but never buy it.

I watch a tv show and movies online to decide whether or not to buy the dvds/go to the cinema. I think it's like watching a gameplay walkthrough to decide if you want the game or listening to music on RU-vid to decide if you want to buy it. Also, watching movies online gives me access to media that hasn't been released in my country, or simply won't be for an unknown reason (idiots). or, they'd see that it's not ideal quality, and since pirated versions are normally representative of the "real" version, then they'd think that the "real" version is equally poor, but you have to pay money for it, and thus, you just lost your pirate demographic.

Broad awareness of a piece of media is invaluable to those who participate in its creation. This has been the case since Homer, whose accounts achieved their timeless stature based on their broad subscription, based on the value audiences impart on them. Copyright law that does not account for this dialectical relationship between producers and consumers will always be widely transgressed as it doesn't respect the actual nature of the exchange it claims to protect.

@adambencen321

YES!!! Finally! You get it!!! The same argument goes for the world of music. When one downloads an album and they end up loving it, they're WAY more likely to go to buy the album, buy tickets to their show, and buy merch when they attend that show. When a band is making a record they(optimally) put it out to be understood and connected with. When people connect with music they support it. This kind of logic can be applied to many different matters concerning intellectual property in my opinion.

"Support" is the word. Relationship between artist and audience is shifting from buying-selling to admiring&supporting. I pirate a lot of stuff, and I buy a lot, and when I do buy a book or game or something I feel like I've just put that money right into the artist's hat (minus the part that goes to publisher), not like I had purchased something. The Path is so great that I bought it twice: long ago, directly from their site (notably DRM-free), and now on Steam just to support Tale of Tales.

I once got a letter in the mail from Comcast warning about my downloading habits. Since then I've gone 100% legal besides sites like freetvproject etc. But it's true... when I had a library of pirated music, the artists that I truly loved and appreciated I went way out of my way to order their really old albums, in old formats, or I would go out of my way to promote the music that I just downloaded. I wouldn't suggest people download it like I did but that's free advertising at the same time. I can't say it for all who have downloaded/pirated stuff but I personally fall into that "I downloaded... I love you... I will support you with cash" group.

As an oconus viewer, the "time-wall" is the one that hits me hardest, not the cash wall. Particularly since everything is on social media the second it happens now. I often have to take an internet embargo around the release of a film/game/comic/tvshow to avoid seeing something I don't want to see (yet). The longer I have to avoid something (up to 6 months for some American movies) increases my desire to plunder the goods.

One of the things some content providers do not see is that their market will not have enough money to buy everything that is there to buy. Pirating maintain interest in something and people can buy it later. Unless you are rocking more than 100K a year, chances are you are struggling in things you can buy and things you should wait for a price drop to buy.

I can say that software piracy in general had a huge element of people that were simply sick of being lied to by box art and conned thusly out of large sums of money. Once opened, the majority of vendors would not give refunds. And the politicians wouldn't craft laws to protect people from it, so they took the situation in hand and started pirating to find the goods they should buy. The entire game industry was forced to offer trail versions in order to prove the worth as a result.

One way that piracy can help sales is, even though this mostly relates to games, devs can look at what games are getting pirated most and then determine better pricing of that game to boost the number of consumers.

This is really good for sales as fans will start buying the books and magazines, and having a popular Manga become an Anime gives the TV companies good publicity, but there's a really big flaw that a lot of fans get up in arms about: Manga's are written on a weekly basis, published in magazines like "Shonen Jump", "Clamp"(Which went out of business), "Tokyopop", or "Shojo Beat".

For a university project, I recently looked at academic articles on the subject of piracy of television and movies, and surprisingly found a good deal of material that supports Petrarca's comment and that file sharing of film/tv do have a positive effect on sales the associated commercial merchandise. The internet, and more specifically P2P networks are a means of spreading buzz about movies and tv shows. This is ironic given the campaigns the MPAA and law enforcement have against piracy.

I started GoT on a pirated website to first see if I even would LIKE then show. Once I got hooked, I went on to watch the next season and the current one on HBO as a paying customer. Do an episode about the art differences of western cartoons and anime, BUT ALSO talk about the inherently different genre styles, how they deliver comedy, action, fantasy, sci-fi and the like and how they compare and contrast!!!

Maybe it's that someone who downloads is more likely to be empassioned with that particular medium, wants to try out the product in order to see which ones they want to support, and therefore downloads to sample and because they don't want to fall without something they are excited about. Especially true when you add the international aspect, as just about only the people in the country of origin get shows when they actually air.

As a piss poor student I often pirate things I'm interested in. Games, music, film, etc. However, if I like what I get I will almost certainly save to up buy it to support the producers of such great content. The problem is that advertisements are (obviously) horrendously biased and game demos are rarely representative., I can't afford to waste any money on something that's not very good, but once the quality is verified I'm more than happy to pay.

As I see it, it's always a benefit when content of any nature get's recognized by a larger audience. Because of the recognition, the people behind the content can profit. Although piracy is bad, I think a great alternative would be sampling. Allow fans of said content to use samples of the work to create tributes, perhaps allow deconstruction or remixing. This has helped anime and some games, seeing how such actions are often done in AMVs, MADs, and MEPs. Fan projects also contributed.

That's so true. Anime is pretty hard to find on TV, BUT, anime culture is pretty big in some spots. And that is entirely to do with fans who may download anime, but then buy the manga, toys and merchandise not to support it or "their guilt", but just cause they love the show.

I've downloaded copies of things *after* I've bought them too, like blu-rays and such. Sometimes it's just more convenient to have a plain video file that will work in any video player.

Let's do a parallel to music industry. With everyone making music, the trend has shifted from 'hey, listen to this song!' to 'hey, listen to MY song!'. Consumers are exposed to too many choice that the best marketing you could do is just to let them watch the show directly; free of charge. If they liked it, attachment still would form, the bond would lead them to buy DVDs, merchandises and what-not.

Not to mention each episode borders on 1gig, almost double that in high quality. People don't realize that not everyone has the hard drive capacity to download and KEEP each episode, which can lead people (like me) to purchase the actual discs.

I absolutely believe piracy is helpful. It helps a show/song/movie/etc's popularity grow. Sure, there are people who steal it just because they can. But, there's an overwhelming majority of people who either can't access it in their country, don't want to wait for the dvd, can't afford it at the moment, or want to try before they buy. These people WILL support it when the dvd comes out. They will buy the books, the dvd's/blu-ray sets, posters, t-shirts, and all kinds of merchandise. They make videos, gifs, fanart, fanfiction. Pirates are some of your biggest fans. Especially people who feel guilty pirating. People who pirate something and become a fan are some of the most loyal and the most guilty. If I download an album and really love the artist, I'll go over the top to support them. I'll buy all their albums, their shirts, go to their concerts, tell other people how great they are, anything I can do to support them. Just because someone downloads doesn't mean they don't love and support the creators of the art they love.

An interesting episode would be about how anime and manga recapture a lot of 'childhood qualities'. Like friendship, or a blind hope and trust in people, some of the most succesful anime and manga are categorized as 'shonen' which basically means that they are for teenage boys and children, though many other age groups still love them.

Neil Gaiman's has an article about piracy, and it is very eye opening. He is a famous novelist, and was against piracy at the start. Funny thing happened, though. The places where most people torrented his books, places like Russia, sales went up by 600%. He correlates those extra sales to torrenting/file sharing. And, even later went on to deem file sharing as a modern day version of gifting/sharing a physical book, album, or movie with a friend.

Piracy is definitely helping GoT. I live in Germany (& have no Pay-TV) and without the possibility of downloading it, I would probably never have had the chance to get a glance on a show, which is now my absolute favorite. I got the first 2 seasons & all 5 books standing around in my room & I'm gonna buy all the rest as well. If I'd have had to wait for german FreeTV, I would definitely have missed the greatest show so far (together with Breaking Bad, which has the same "story" for me)

The thing about television is that it has schedule almost no one has time for. When i want to watch something, it's much more convenient to stream online than sit down at 9pm/10pm central to watch one episode, when the entire season of something is online. Plus, the episode airing is probably so and so into a season when im just starting. And what if i don't want to buy something i might not like? If it's good enough, it will get my money. This is what i do when i buy Anime all the time. --Next

The Canadian RIAA actually did a study that Also showed that heavy downloaders were also heavy buyers of legit media. There's a story on Arstechnica titled "Study: P2P users buy more music; apathy, not piracy, the problem" that talks it. Btw, I hate that YT won't let us post external links

The studies that show that people who pirate don't buy the media may not have a long enough time lag between the pirating and the purchasing. Pirates may immediately buy by media when it becomes available, however they may wait until it becomes cheaper; they can buy it used; or when they need to make room in their storage. Media files are very large and aren't always the best quality (especially when in the stolen form). DVDs are more permanent and more portable.

Neil Gaiman said it best, I think. "People were discovering me through being pirated. Then they were going out and buying the real books, and when a new book would come out in Russia, it would sell more and more copies." Basically he compares it to the library, you discover a series through a source where you otherwise (for monetary or other reasons) cannot obtain it, and then you like it so much that you actually reward the author for making such a great series with actual cash.

It's actually quite easy to explain, Example: if you go buy a house, you don't just buy it, you actually see it first, if you like it you buy it, why would I buy the series DVD if I haven't seen it, I'm not buying crap, as simple as that, if I see a serie and I consider it's good I'll make sure to buy to support the industy, creator, etc so that the series itself can continue, I have downloaded (OMG), scrubs, that 70's show, dexter and some more, bought them afterwards since I liked them.

This year for the first time we could access HBO in my country via internet and watch new episodes of GoT on our computers with only minor delay (not 1 year delay as was the case earlier). And for a very reasonable price. A "friend of mine" who had previously downloaded episodes signed up and now pays legitimately to watch. Same "friend" also bought Season 1 and 2 on blue-ray. So there's that.

The kind of piracy that is usually done, just downloading something so you can watch it because you can't otherwise access it, in many cases is just that: a way of enjoying media you can't otherwise get to. However, once you do have other ways of accessing the media, you instead change over to those, generally because once you have a legitimate access point, it is easier to view the material (easier to have a DVD than to have to find download links.)

As for anime, I would love you to do an episode on anime as a representation of the Japanese subconscious. I've always been fascinated by the huge difference between the extremely reserved, rigid, super-polite, dissembling outer Japanese persona, and the CRAZY weird hyper-emotional stuff that seems to make up a good deal of anime.

And to follow up: MPAA has studies that also support that file sharers are more likely to consume the commercially available media and associated products than people who do not download pirated material. In an interview, an MPAA official also said piracy is never going away, and this is probably true given the way digital technology keeps advancing and the movie/tv industry cannot keep up with the changes and greater efficiency.

Agreed. File sharing is no different than sharing other property. If I loan a book to someone, does that rob the publisher of well-deserved revenue? Not likely.

It's not that I wrote it 3 years ago. The point was 3 years of strong sales, then pirated. Within 30 days sales dropped to nearly zero. Piracy is so quick and crippling, that coming up with an alternative means of income is nearly impossible in such a short time frame.

It's more then understandable. When you know something and you like something it's much easier for you to justify spending money on that one thing. People who download lots of music are people who usually knows and loves music more, are more into it and are more likely to spend money on their passion. Same with GoT. When we found with my friends GoT board game, we were so trilled we bought it on spot. Not because it's the best board game in there or that we buy lots of board games - it was mostly so that we could play it after watching GoT episodes (don't ask how did we get the episode).
