“I need a drink” is too often a common refrain. Alcohol consumption in the U.S. has drastically increased since the beginning of the pandemic. Culture often treats alcohol like a cure-all for stress through, in part, messages about how desirable and relaxing it is to drink. However, within hours of the first sip, the process of breaking it down creates interruptions to almost every system in the human body, especially the brain. Furthermore, alcohol use impacts mental health and can increase stress. What if humans looked at alcohol intake with the same scrutiny as calories, sugar, caffeine, and harmful chemicals? Rather than using alcohol to cope, humans can make better choices to move forward as a society. Samantha Perkins is an author, speaker, wellness coach, and proud advocate for living alcohol free. Her first book, Alive AF: One Anxious Mom's Journey to Becoming Alcohol Free explored her relationship with alcohol and how she began to heal from lifelong anxiety through eliminating alcohol and embracing self-care. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

I don’t drink, have never really been drawn to alcohol as a coping strategy, but this resonates with me so much. As I was watching, I found myself thinking that the same is true of SO MANY other poor coping strategies that I DO use - overeating, binging on sweets, criticizing others, mindlessly scrolling on social media, soooo many things. Your talk inspires me to create, at least for myself, some of the items you mentioned - mugs, t-shirts, artwork for my home - that remind me of the things that DO truly help me cope when I can remember to do them: prayer, reading, journaling, getting into nature, movement just for fun. I want to surround myself with these things so that my mind is constantly reminded of what fills me up and brings me peace. Thank you, so much, for your bravery, for doing the hard thing and trusting that there is at least one that will make it worth your effort. Today I am that one, but I know there are MANY more than one.

Alcohol is merely the symptom, it's not the cause. I do dry January every year and it's never a struggle. However, I never woke up feeling refreshed, I never lost weight, I never looked any better. And that is because I replaced one addiction for another - crisps, biscuits, chocolates. So, what is really needed, is to understand why I (we) can't be alone in an evening without turning to something to try and make me (us) feel better. Shae Thomas makes a similar observation below - albeit going straight to the solution rather than the underlying cause.
