American Football actually started as a combination of Association Football and Rugby Football, hence the simplification to just "Football". People used to die playing the game until 1908 when President Teddy Roosevelt got all of the colleges together to make the sport safer.

The problem with viewing these highlights is the speed of the game in the NFL looks relative on film. The truth is the speed at the skill positions in the NFL is far greater than in rugby, and the average size of the players in football is also greater. This means the average g-force of the hits in the NFL is about 63 g's, whereas in rugby it's only about 21 g's. Yes, over 2.5 times more. Padding or not the concussion forces, especially to the brain is far more injurious, there is no padding on the joints, such as the knees, and very little below the waist. Taking a padded shoulder or a helmet to the knee is no joke. Taking a padded shoulder or helmet to the gut can be life altering. Also most of the stadiums in the NFL use artificial turf which is harder than grass. From my view point it's rugby that's softer.

The thing to note with the clips of Allen (one of the ones that got a touchdown by touching the pylon, amongst other clips) is the position he plays... doesn't do much of the "putting yourself at risk of being hit". Its exceptional for a *quarterback* how much he does it.

Who said American football is soft ? The greatest athletes in the world play in the NFL and NBA.. Rugby is a VERY simple sport..It's the same thing over and over and over ! Rugby is checkers..American football is chess !!!

Soft? Several pro rugby players have tried being an NFL player. Only one (I'm aware of anyway) has ever made it past pre-season without being injured. That one player that made it got to week four as a special teamer before his NFL career was ended. They where those pads for a reason, speed+mass=force. Or, we are just bigger-faster-stronger and hit real hard.

In American football the speed is so fast in the open field that you are FORCED to reach out with your hands to try and grab them (Especially in the open field) because the athleticism is so profound that the runner will just HOP over your hands or simply kick up to avoid your hands and keep going. Going for the legs sounds good but usually only works if its a run at the line of scrimmage. So its not embarrassing, it's common sense. Rugby and football are obviously two different animals and need to be respected as such.

Rugby is a full contact sport. American Football is a collision sport. 😅

Going for the legs will cause automatic decrease of speed. They need to run fast and straight to avoid the next guy

I'm from New Zealand. No...NFL isn't soft. It's a different sport to rugby with different rules. The actual running and tackling are very similar with the latter being no less as spectacular or painful if executed incorrectly. The fact that NFL players wear helmets and padding doesn't detract from the fact that players can incur injuries similar to those of rugby players.

The one thing I want to add is, because of the size of these guys, these are athletic plays. The athleticism of these guys are amazing! You’ve got guys that are 6’2, 250pounds of pure muscle, running this fast, leaping over guys, that are, most of the time bigger then them, because those men are on the defensive team. These guys are lifting 3-5 hundred pounds, 20-30 reps (or something like that). That’s pre muscle, with pads running fast, look at “NFL biggest freaks of nature”. That’s why they are able to take those hard hits, jump over, get tied up, and hop up like it’s nothing.

Most great offensive plays are also horrific defensive plays. Sometimes there is a big offensive play in spite of good defense, but not often.

Sorry rugby and football aren't even compared. When you put on pads that natural instinct of protecting our bodies including for rugby players is always present. Once you put on pads you understand you habe to go 100% speed 100% of the regardless of if it's with you head while running as fast as you possibly can at another gigantic person running fully speed at you. In rugby you can't have that because people would die. Football is by far the most intense sport on Earth. I played for many years and it's crazy. When you're 14 and you're told to run full speed at a 17 year old much bigger then you and launch your body at them it takes a LOT of mental fortitude to convince your body to do it. Boke my ankle at 14. My older brother got a compound fractured in his leg where the bod popped through his skin at 17 and at 18 ripped his arm and tendons from his shoulder. My other brother broke both an arm and shoulder. This was just the 3 of us while teenagers in Jr high and high school. The violence in football is not even remotely comparable to any sport of Earth.
