My dad had one when I was a kid, best hunting vehicle ever. That low Rev high torque motor and 4 low was capable of idling over obstacles that would halt other 4x4s. It crawled so slow in 4 low my dad once hopped out to take a leak and left it in gear, he only had to walk a few feet to get back in!

Ya, I got a chuckle out of him thinking those vents are "quirky," showing his apparently young age. Every truck in the 1970s had vents like that!

I have a 73 I've owned for about 30 years. Hard to get stuck! The "Wandering" is because of the fact that when it is raised it throws the caster out of alignment. I had to use 1/4" wedges on my front end to bring it back, and no more wandering.

Beautiful scout! Thank you for sharing. I had a 74 with a spring over that handled horribly at highway speeds. I reversed the front leaf springs so that they the shackles pivoted in the back instead of the front. The improvements was amazing, I was even able to tow on the highway.

Nice Scout! Thanks for sharing. I have a 69’ scout 800 with similar mods. The wandering problem is the result of having 0deg. caster from the factory. Having the knuckles cut and turned on your front axle to add caster will make a hug difference. Mine now has 6deg. and tracks great.

I enjoyed your post. The Scout II is really cool. I once owned a 73? one ton International 4 wheel drive with factory plow. The" Farmers truck". It was a beast. I ran it on propane. Best truck I ever had. Can't find anything comparable today.

My uncle was an International Harvester dealer in Monte Vista Colorado. He sold the Scout alongside agricultural equipment and he and our family would drive nothing else. When the Scout was discontinued my uncle was devastated, he wasn't about to switch to Jeep, Ford or to a GM product, so crazily he bought a Mitsubishi pickup instead (a gutless wonder!) just to be different. I wish that he had put one of his trucks in mothballs, for a future generation to enjoy, but alas that was not to be. Great walk around!

I love the look of your scout. I had a '72 and a 79 SCOUT ( the '79 was my favorite) that I took off road every chance I could. I am wishing I didn't sell them when I needed a pick up for a new job. I have been on the lookout for another Scout II to replace them. I had a similar problem that you mentioned about it being unstable at highway speed so we went with a little wider tire and rim combo. The combo we had on it wasn't wide enough and it made the Scout feel like it was being pushed really bad when you would get up to speed.

I love it man my grandpa had one with a 4 speed 345. It was unstoppable in the colorado mountains. My grandpa really put his through some serious off road workouts and it never let him down. It was a 73 4 inch suspension lift and 35 in all terrain tires with an rv cam. This truck literally went anywhere one paths were straight up and narrow, which the scout climbed no problem. I would pay top dollar to have it.., today.

My buddy was a HUGE scout guy. He even had a traveler and a 3/4 ton travelall with the 390(I think) and a stick. I had a '78 traveler with the 345 and an automatic. LOVED IT! His fav was a 74 scout with the 345 and a manual. Great rig!! You are right, those 345 blocks are a beast! We were wrenching in my shop and moved around some blocks. The striped down 345 block was as heavy to lift as the 350 we picked up that was still complete. We were younger and thought we were gorillas. Lol. Love your rig. I was looking at those OX lockers for my 85 4- runner. I love the worm drive limited I have now, but can be a little tricky on slick rock if you have to manipulate it to get it to engage. .

Very nice, the white with red and the light slate blue with white are my 2 favorite colors ever and they look great on the scouts. I Built one in Highschool and sold it in 92 which was 2 years after I graduated. Had no rust and I did a chevy 350 conversion mated to the 4sp, 4" lift with 33' and at one time 35's. Brings back memories. Wish I would have kept mine. I had a 72 with the 345 and limited slip 4:27 ratio differentials. Others have stated how these things would just crawl in low lock. If I accelerated slowly it would be in third gear by 10 mph. I remember in 2wd high I didn't like to go above 55 mph, because it was revving like a school bus. Great trucks. That 345 was made for heavy work. Mine had a split bench seat in the front, and in the back had heavy rubber with metal strips. It was also on the back of the rear seat so when you folded it flat it was all the same. Nice tough liner for hauling things.

345 cubic Inch. Dad was a mechanic for a trailer home & delivery company during the early 70's, & spoke of the 345 blocks this way. As I rebuild the engine, one thing in common with each rebuild is that the block never needs to be bored over. It is as if their block steel has been somehow crystallized like porcelain. The piston & rings when wearing out seem to become a smidgen square; but never the cylinders.

The reason you're steering wanders is because they probably did not do a cut and turn on your axles when they did the spring over. Your caster is off and it may be worse than it was from the factory which was 0°. If you're going to lower it, you might consider having somebody do a cut and turn and add to five to six degrees of caster. Mine is raised higher than yours but I put Chevy Dana 44 underneath my front end. It came stock with about 5° and my truck tracks straight as an arrow at 75 mph.

Dude I love international scouts. My dad has two of them. I spent my youth helping work on the first one. It's a 72 with a 345 but it's a 3 spd auto. It has the same axles but i think the gear ratio is smaller. The only real modification that was done was we put cams in it and cats so it idles like a harley. Then the 2nd one I spent the end of my teenage years (like 17 - 19). Its a 1976 with 196 and a three speed manual. Its bored about 20-30 over but it's way lighter since we used fiberglass body panels. I love working on them and driving them is just as fun. I love the lockers you put in it and based off of what I know it looks like a two inch lift but you should have talked about the nut busters (wing windows).

there were 2 different t-19 4 speeds available for a scout. the wide ratio as mentioned in this video with super granny low 1st gear. there was also a close ratio that meant you used 1st gear every time you started out just like in a car. it was great for towing a small boat or trailer.

Once you put the springs back under the axles (as designed) your wandering problem should mostly go away, particularly with the added steering brace. Also add the flat-bar anti-sway bar between the front shackles that was on later Scout IIs; and even the 1980 camber setting bushings (& disc brakes) to the front axle pivots. It will drive 100% better. Awesome rig!

I owned two Scout II’s in the 70’s I bought new. First one was a 73, I bought as a left over in spring of 76! From an International Truck Dealer. The reason why is they had ordered it for a client that passed away a day before delivery, that was a plain Jane, 258 straight-six, 727 auto, single-speed transfer case 4x4. it was a decent SUV for bad weather, great in the snow, but without Low Range sucked in beach sand! So I traded it in two years. For number Two, a special ordered, Special Edition, 78 Scout II TERRA pick up! basically a Scout II with 18” added wheelbase, between front doors an rear wheels giving it a 6.5’bed and 2,000 lbs capacity, with a 345 4brl dual exhaust, rated at 210hp, 320 lbs-ft. Tq. HD 727 automatic, 3:55 Detriot Locker Rear + Front open gearing, plus HD Two Speed Transfer Case! The Special Edition came in Canyon Black with Gold Rock Crawler Wheels, Gold strips along the sides just below the side view mirrors and removable white cab roof, with the SSII Grill just like above. Brown bucket seats and dash with matching plush door panels and black dashboard with wood grained areas and aluminum turned instrument cluster. A very nice truck that ran fantastic! But was mine for only 13 months, due to the family trucking business closing after OPEC II! I saw the truck in around 87, but ever though I had it ZeeBart Rust Proving done the day after I picked it up, it was totally rusted out! Sad how the tin worm had such a big appetite for the Scouts in wet/snowy areas! But also the body hardware, hinges door latches window cranks, heater cables were also all junk! But the engine, chassis and drivetrains were bulletproof!
