I am glad to see the trend back toward lighter hoods. I am an aircraft welder for a global airline. I rock an old Huntsman Masonite hood I bought when I started. I made a leather bib for it from some leather scraps from our seat shop. I had been using a new automatic the last few years and those things are too heavy. I bought an automatic insert for my old Huntsman and am using it again. I had issues with the new auto insert blinking on me as I tapper off. I had my cheater on the outside. Flipped it to the back and it helped that. If my old Huntsman gives out on me, I may try one like this. Good video.

I don’t like auto darkening at all. I typically switch between a grinder, stinger, and/or torch quickly and prefer to just use a flip up.

If yer gonna buy one of these I recommend the Tigerhood. That flip up is nice and you don't have to modify it like you do the sugar scoop. Also, for beginners, I gotta recommend the jackson flip front.$40 . I used it for years.

Hey I’m looking for a new one. I work in a shipyard and I was looking at the tiger hood with the flip up attachment. We’re required to wear a hard hat with the speed loop. Do these fit over a hard hat like that without much adjustment? That’s my biggest issue. The pipeliner hood struggles to stay down when I need to weld in the ground or at a downward angle (which is often).

im a ironworker and this welding hood was light weight but for outside the sun always enters and gives me a blind spot and if not properly stored the leather gets all mushed up , cool but not for outside welding especially when sun is behind you

Yeah definitely, you should try a pancake hood, crisp arc and no backlight!

Doesn’t that apply to all hoods at that point? Are you allowed pancakes?
@sh0rtyb0yp1mp
@sh0rtyb0yp1mp 2 года назад
@@Mikey-ym6ok never used a pancake but we have to have hardhats while we work so the welding hood has to slide up and down on the hard hat which requires a hard hat adapter not sure if you can use with a pancake . but yeah sun does go threw but with this hood it goes in a lot more . great hood tho

switch over to a fixed lens for tig bro! the clarity is better and you don’t need to worry about your lens flashing

Thanks for the advice bro! I only recently got a HF start tig welder, and fixed lenses are a nightmare with scratch start, but now that i do i'll look into that :). The weird arc of my scratch start tig setup wasn't triggering the lens but my new legit TIG setup does :)

You can’t get flashed with a auto dark unlike flashing yourself trying to prepare starting the arc with you hood up.

Let us know how often you throw batteries in that lens. Also love the video. But I do believe outlaw leather head their own brand of pipeliner it IS not a fiber metal, it has different headgear and layout it’s super close and probably is made in the same place, but. The chopped pipelines w a rag top from hubcap welds is a real pipeliner. All in all love the video and love outlaw leather I have a hood from them. Let us know about the batteries in the lens.

Thanks brother, my lincon 3350 has the same lens but it's 4x4 with a larger battery pack and it hasn't needed replacing and i've had it for a few months now. I haven't used my other hoods enough for the batteries to run low (most of them have the same lens) but so far i've been really happy with it, besides my complaint about TIG welding. Yeah you're probably right about the hood, it has different headgear and a different way of holding the lens. Thanks brother, God bless

They switched to sellstrom helmets for some godamn reason.I just made my one with a tiger hood for half the price since ordering a fiber metal tiger hood is a “custom order” now they told me. Sellstrom helmets are fine the headgear is garbage though.

I've used one from them with a flip for over a year but I would not recommend getting one. In no way is it lightweight, leather this thick weighs much more than fiberglass, the main issue I have with my hood is the ratchet on the headgear wears out and you can't tighten you're headgear anymore. I've replaced the headgear 3 times now. That being said, it does look cool.

Bought an outlaw hood then saw a few post they changed headgear. Man i wish i coulda returned it. There headgear now is worthless. I ordered a pipliner and sold the outlaw. All hoods being chopped top and bottom. I seitched because it weighs nothing compared to my viking 3350 and i dont need a face shield with the flip up. Only issue is getting a respirator that will fit ok under it

Perhaps the light sensors got covered?....I really like the look of these hoods but I rock the optrel adf so I don't think that would be easily compatible with that hood.

Used my DIYtigerhood version for welding some tube plugs inside a boiler drum. If you know- you know. I don’t use it much unless it’s close quarters- I just use my reg sugar scoops..slightly chopped..

So why would you not recommend someone this for one of there first or second hoods?
@MiklthePikl
@MiklthePikl 3 года назад
There's no point i can see in getting one. People who are starting out welding typically reach for an auto-darkening lens, fixed lenses are more common among professionals because of their reliability. This helmet cannot fit an auto-darkening lens because of the increased thickness, and because it is not a flip hood, a fixed lens can be a challenge to use. The open top of the hood also requires a welding cap, which adds to the complexity. Outlaw leather hoods appear to be made for serious welders and professionals, people starting out would be better off with a high-quality auto-darkening welding helmet (in my opinion of course)

@austinallen1108
@austinallen1108 2 года назад
I'm late to answering this, but if you want, you can easily use this for tig. It comes with a fixed lens, which is fine with a foot control tig rig, but lift-arc might be difficult. I just got a 20-30 dollar auto darkening shade 9 and it works for everything. I used the outlaw hood for welding classes and still use it for work building fences.
