Is AP 1.0 still better than AP 2.0?

2 years ago I made a video that stated that AP1 was at that time still better than AP2. You can find that original test here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-J4OF11Lglr0.html. Many updates have since come and gone and I thought it was time to do another test round of my AP test circuit with an AP1 car.
A fellow Tesla driver was gracious enough to lend me his AP1 car, so I could do the test. So make sure to use his referral code above and in the video as a way to thank him for allowing me to use his car.
I could have tested many more situations (which I did) and it would make for great popcorn time :-), but the result is very conclusive already on my usual test circuit: AP1 has become too dangerous to use on local roads and should only be used on highways. So, for those of you with AP1 cars, keep it safe!

It seems like safety regulations ends up making driving on autopilot less safe. Thats sounds like orwellians newspeak...

Regulations are for all cars and not just Tesla. Other brands (except Nissan) don’t have these issues because they are less capable. Conspiracy theoriecrven states that the regulations are formed by these other brands and their capabilities so they csn claim their system is as capable as a Tesla. Not saying that is true, but...

Such a coincidence! I received a AP1 Model S (basic ap only) as a loaner today because my 3 is in service. AP1 is far superior if there are no clear lane lines, it has no issue following a car over big roundabouts with road splits. AP2 freaks out in that scenario because it can’t find the lane, but feels more like ‘on rails’ in almost all other scenarios. AP1 feels more natural but less predictable. One thing about AP1 I liked too was that it stops closer to the car in front of you in stop-and-go and stoplights and such.

Roundabouts in AP2 are coming. And I have noticed that in the last update AP2 also stops closer to the car in front. But you are right that AP1 is better in following a car than AP2. But tgat also means that if the car in front goes off the road, AP1 will still follow it and crash as well 😁

Steven, thank you very much for your very professional content. I'm an AP enthusiast just like you, it's the #1 reason I've been driving T's for 5 years. Can I ask you for your advice? I've kept my current S (AP2.5) on fw 2019.12.1.2 after I saw in your movies the nag was going to be increased (I really miss the first 6 months of AP with basically 0 nags). I did pickup FSD when Elon was offering a discount, so I do have NoA, but it's not in this Fw yet. Would you upgrade now from 2019.12.1.2? I live in that little country north of you.

Wow, not upgrading for a year, that is dedication 😲. It’s a difficult decision. AP has gotten more stable over the year, but there are drawbacks as well, like the regulations. When your car will be upgraded to the FSD computer, Tesla will update your car’s software anyway. There is no escape 😉.

Just to let you know, I got the upgrade to HW3 (from 2.5) on my MS in May with SW 2020.20.12 and it is a great improvement all round, including very smooth accl/braking on motorway. Specifically on the kind of curves Steven tests, the speed control is a lot better now, i.e. it slows down in advance where it never would have before. In that sense the UN/ECE r79 limitations are not so often hit and I expect this will continue improving with new maps, etc. Regarding the nags they are every 15s but one gets used to keeping a hand in contact with the wheel. In Europe several SW advances are expected in latter half of 2020, e.g. stopping at lights in Q3. All things considered I would strongly recommend jumping to HW3 asap.

Last year I already wondered what the height difference of the camera’s and sensors are between a low MX and MS and also a standard height or high. It probably has an better view on the MX. Do you know someone who’s fine with lending you an MX doing these same AP tests?

I did test a Model X last year and didn’t find any difference in behaviour.

Thanks for that just shows how AP has changed over time,we are still on EU regs here in UK too even after we left the EU last year, I hope The UK Government will get the regs put right and let the Tesla car drive as designed to,the EU regs are like something from the dark ages making them unsafe
@StevenPeeters
@StevenPeeters 4 года назад
The regulations are UN, not EU. It’s just that all European countries take same standpoint

Steven Peeters of course! I meant just because they aren’t part of the EU, it doesn’t mean AP isn’t nerfed :)

At 1:34 I think the issue is that AP looses the left lane marking and because it can not center within the lane anymore it hugs the right marking because of "fear of driving off the road on the left side". AP1 basically does not know where the road ends on the left side. I have the same issue on my daily drive to work but without a hill. Thats why the issue is not there in 2:07. On my drive to work there is a light left turn after that (would be at 1:37 in your video) and AP1 (had it in a loaner a few weeks ago) is really bad there my AP3 much better at this point.
@StevenPeeters
@StevenPeeters 4 года назад
AP1 only has a concept of following lane lines. When they disappear, AP tries to do its best not to drive off the road, but it has no concept of "drivable space" like AP2+ does.

@@StevenPeeters Yes but I think it's something like this: if(twoLinesVisable) { centerBetweenLines(); } else if(oneLineVisable) { KeepDistanceOf10CmToThatLane(); } 10cm is just an example Value... So if your lane width is not equal to vehicle width + 2*10cm AP1 jerks around when sometimes one and sometimes two lanes are visable... Probably the hill is an issue too but like I said on my way there is the same problem of going right and back to the middle of the lane on AP1 on completely flat road...

Do you have phantom braking in AP1 vs AP2/3?
@StevenPeeters
@StevenPeeters 4 года назад
I rarely have phantom braking nowadays. It was much worse a year ago. Now it’s every once in a while for a parked car in a turn or something. Definitely not anymore for bridges and overpasses.

At the moment? Yes. But as said, it used to be a lot better than what it is today. Plus the fact that AP2 can be enabled in a lot more circumstances.

Great video, but you should bash the stupid, unsafe regulations from the rotten EU more often, at every instance they force the car to do unsafe things! I have recorded this AP1.0 video about two years ago: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-coi1-_Oajbo.html - perfect driving at curvy roads, and higher speeds. Today this is dangerous due to "regulations" made by corrupt or stupid people (choose for yourself).
