As a Star Citizen backer..yeah NO Dates, you have NO way to know what going to happen , Key people get sick, things you plan don't workout the way you plan months ahead and some people feel that a roadmap which basically just a Best Guess is actually a PROMISE that cannot be missed. They missed several dates already as is Normal in game dev and some backers will freak out over it. If you Must give a Roadmap it should be more then 6 months out at most.

More impressive is the way that he keeps telling how much better Ashes will be as a game while alpha 2 isnt even here yet. The real test of all those promises that Steven has made is when players get the chance to play the game themselves. Its always easy to make grand promises about an upcoming mmo but nailing the mechanics isnt easy.

i think very loose dates can be OK-ish, but yeah, in general I'd prefer they not have them because development can be very unpredictable and there's no reason to commit to stuff/pigeonhole yourself needlessly.

Roadmap is a marketing tool. They don't care about existing paypigs, I mean fans, because they have already paid, they want new blood. And new blood with functioning brains, I mean who are not existing fans, will see a game stuck in development hell with no release in sight. So you gotta trick, I mean reassure, them that there's a concrete plan that the studio is following.

One of the first things you learn when contracting development is to under promise and over deliver. If you think a project will take a month you say it will take 2 months. If you finish the MVP in a month you can present that, and give yourself time to add the bells and whistles. Maybe even QA it properly… The worrying thing is I think Intrepid probably knows this, and so missing another “deadline” actually means they’re not just going slower than expected but they’re encountering significant unknowns in their process. Figuring out stuff along the way is usual, but finding out there’s things you didn’t know you didn’t know is terrible and can cause drastic delays on projects.

I really don’t understand all of these recent videos about losing faith in the team. I really haven’t noticed a change in messaging from the team, and there really hasn’t been a deadline missed yet. If A2 doesn’t come out then I’d say the panic can begin.

It’s not that it is a game, but it is an important release. There is very good reason to not advertise a product when another more popular one is having it’s one month surge that happens once a year on a major content release. I’m pretty sure that is not a very controversial take. For a game that has been in open development for more than half a decade, people seem to be freaking out over one month which is crazy to me. It would be like people losing their minds every time a monthly stream gets delayed a week, did they break our trust then? I think this is an incredibly entitled community that don’t realize how transparent this development process has been, and has lost sight of what is normal and not normal. Don’t get me wrong, if the alpha doesn’t drop this year, I think there needs to be some serious conversations, but right now I am completely calm.

I think one important thing to note about these videos is that when he says "we" and "the community" when saying dramatic things like "the community can't trust anything you say anymore".. he is talking about him and maybe 10 other sweatlords spamming walls of text to each other in a discord who are actually hanging on the devs' every word and have a heart attack if there's a 1 week delay on something in an ALPHA. The vast amount of the actual "community" are people with a casual to moderate interest who aren't bothered by this stuff at all and are just patiently waiting for the game. (don't get me wrong, I've been loving Narc's videos and his dedication to this game, but sometimes you need some perspective)

That said, I think most of those guys are eventually gonna have to realise they're either gonna have to join the enlightened side of people who don't turn grinding mindless themeparks into their whole life, or the time of video games providing them with any measurable amount of fun is firmly in the past for them anyway, so their opinion can be safely ignored.

Star Citizen did the same thing. They attached deadlines that absolutely were not necessary, only to consistently miss them. They continued to do this until people stopped paying attention to the project, then they finally changed their approach.

TO BE FAIR, studios usually have internal roadmaps that consumers dont see. Ashes started with a public roadmap then scrapped that idea when they didnt meet their original goals. If they dont have internal roadmaps, that gives me fear for ashes future. You need goals to achieve.... No goals, and things start taking too long

I think it depends a lot on the type of roadmap they present. I think everyone would love to know what still needs to be done for sure in the eyes of the developers. If we know what major systems still need to be implemented or designed, we can get a better feel for how long it may still take as we see these things unfold in the livestreams. That being said, making long term plannings and setting deadlines is difficult, so they should steer clear of that.

That’s the thing though they do have a ton of money they sold 100k a2 keys and 4 years after A1 they still don’t have some form of a playable game even if it was a test server for people to play on tell me how that makes sense? Also people are complaining how long the game is taking to be developed it’s been 8 years since they started this journey and still no playable game but good thing they sold fomo packs of thin air and conned their player base

Agreed, I prepurchased 4 years ago now and nothing to show for it including confidence. Even once after being made redundant asked for a refund to be told no I couldn’t receive a refund after a month of receiving product, fuckin laughed at them and said thin air and weak promises is not classed as receiving the product

I like the idea of a road map. But dates are not needed. Just say what your plan is with a order of what you are working on. This allows us as customers to sit here and go cool they are at point 3.5 or something. we can see them keeping to the process. dates always change and move. people dont understand that so dont do it....( i really should do my comments after watching the whole video...) I would like to think there were will be mixture of small updates and large. Where a large is here is a new biozone opposed to here is an update to UI or something

Wow for sure wasnt a basic game when it came out. It combined a lot of mechanics from different mmos of the time making the experience more pleasing to a lot of players. I dont understand the need to slam the existing mmos to buff Ashes of Creation up.

Courteous person gives kudos to games that extend the genre and bring in more players like Wow certainly did. Some of them went to play also more niche kind of mmos.

Multi-years roadmaps are basically stupid considering how software projects are built and how complex they can become (not just video games). It will either lower the quality of the delivered product, the functional scope, or be delayed. It's inevitable due to the complexities of integrating software pieces together, and the hidden complexities that you cannot find until you start coding the real thing. No amount of planning can remove this. Sadly people don't code so don't expect them to understand this by themselves. That's why as a developer, you should rather gather feedback as often as possible and provide USABLE software to the users in order to get this feedback. The issue with Id software is that they want the benefits of Agile development (the continuous feedback) while not providing software to the people that want it. They trapped themselves early with big announcements about a continous, system complete alpha 2, whereas they should have provided small but playable software much earlier. This way, delays are scoped to the next iteration and that's OK. For a MMO you can provide a new piece every quarter or semester while releasing small blocks like a small explorable zone with dynamic weather, etc. They probably provide usable builds with internal testers but not with their final customers. There's a limit to the quality of the feedback of a few users. Sometimes you need the big numbers to detect anomalies. This being said, I think they do much better than most game dev companies in that regard. At least we know where they are at the moment.

i dont think they will have dates...that would be quite big mistake and they never wanted to give dates because even when people constantly cry about dates and they eventually cave in and give dates they usually have some issues (which is 100% understandable in development) and have to delay for a couple of days and people go wild like its been delayed 100years..the most i expect from road map is the order of things planned

There's tons of people out there who need to watch this AMA. I posted a comment on that video about the 12k player guild saying servers will only hold 10k at a time. I was "corrected" by someone who clearly has a better idea than I do saying "there's only going to be 1 North American server and it'll hold 500k". My bad for listening to the founder of the company over random RU-vid channels that cover dozens of games a week.

That was more Bethesda (pre-Starfield). Rockstar tends to release games in the Fall so two years before release they drop an announcement trailer (to generate hype) and then they spend January to Fall of the release year dropping character and gameplay trailers as a marketing blitz up until launch.

*you are accruing a material debt if you want to repair and increase again the performance of those particular items that take that durability loss.* i don't think this is a good idea even more so when there is a lineage 2 pvp idea in play in this game not everyone has time to go gather the stuff thats needed to restore damage gear and or to buy said mats on a player type auction idea where lazy jerks love to jack up the prices that no one can afford seeing how prices won't be fixed a lot of persons are already used to paying money to fix gear and that should not move to anything more else for requirement the more i hear about this game the more its starting to remind me a lot like how eve online is played but more of a hard core deeper version of eve online i will say it now any mod or gm that tells me can't do anything about a jerk that is not letting me grab the stuff i need to even repair my gear and i will drop this game so fast persons heads won't even have time for 1 spin

Well to be honest the only people who keep track of Ashes news this early on are the copium addicts that have already decided to buy the game. So the roadmap might end up being a mistake, but hardly a huge one. All that really matters is that the game is good when it finally launches. It's literally impossible for a great game to fly under the radar in the current gaming sphere. All it takes is for Asmondgold to post a video of him playing a new game on RU-vid and say how good it is. Then 50 other content creators will react to his videos inside a week.

You are spot on Narc! Intrepid is doing an Agile development, and in, for instance Scrum, you really don't want to give deadlines, only a prioritized list/order for the stuff you are developing. The reason for this is that they are working in a challenging environment, where they are taking in feedback from the users and trying out new shitt that no-one has done before. A road map will run a huge risk of just being "broken promises." They should do, as you said with just having a prioritized list. "First, we are going to work on this, then that is in a state that we feel is acceptable, we will move forward to the next area," and si on. I hope the dear to tell us this and then focus on improving the communication going forward. 😊

We were promised Concurrent testing. So this better be mostly 24/7. I dont think anyone has tried to launch a A2 with 200k players. My guess this will be a poop show for the first 1-3 months.

I'm personally fine with delays in development, I think it's because I am excited, but I don't look up the game until the monthly updates and I don't hang on waiting for the game outside of it. If you're on the edge of your seat waiting, then even a delay is more frustrating.

I think it's so embarrassing how many people proclaim "I only want a fully finished product, don't rush," but then jump on the outrage and doomsaying train when things get delayed. If that was me, I'd start to disregard my own thoughts until they become internally consistent. Just play a different game or pick up a new hobby, and stop following open development, as you've been told to do for years, if the roadblocks of developing an innovative MMO frustrate you.

Personally i think your wrong about the multiple years in alpha 2, they have a loose roadmap of release dates on the wiki saying that Alpha 2 and Beta release will happen very close to each other and as alpha 2 closes out that's when they go release, so I'm personally expecting it to take no more than another 3 years in total until the game is in our hands officially. For the roadmap, im expecting roughly in order" biome, mechanics, filler smaller details, race ( probably the Vaelune in game), Class ( summoner ), game mechanic, Node updates, World progression updates, Race reveal ( Tulnar ), then whatever small thing after to fill the void.

More information to players = GOOD. Less information to players = BAD. Roadmaps = GOOD. Just see SC, the game with the most delatiled roadmap and also the most transparent company in gaming. Its never bad to give information to players. The only way how u could not want information as a player is if u are a fanatic fanboy and thinking that it is better FOR THE COMPANY to not be open.
