Audacity is a free and simple to use digital audio workstation. It's great for those of you getting started with audio. But is Audacity any good for professional use?
Audacity was the first digital audio workstation that I ever used, probably about 15 years ago now. But I still use it for basic recording tasks, checking files before sending them to clients and more, even now that I have access to Pro Tools, Cubase, Reaper and so on.
In this video, I go over the three main reasons why I still use Audacity today for certain audio tasks, and why you should too.

I use it because I don't have any that you pay for lol. I use it for recording guitar and converting. I use the audio tools in Vegas for my video audio.

What is the best DAW to use after being familiar with Audacity and wanting to start composing music with instruments?

Hi Julian, great question. There are a lot of great DAWs out there. Even free ones that are more advanced. Pro Tools is one of the most widely used DAWs in the industry. And I'll be posting a full course for free on here in January on Pro Tools First - the free version of Pro Tools. Alternatively, Cakewalk is a solid option for a free DAW that's feature-rich.

@@JoeAtClaricast Thank you, it's not really about free vs paid for me, but rather about simplicity. My goal is composing minimalist tracks, but Audacity offers no choice for any instrument except for phone noise and DTMF tones and some other sounds, which are okay to use for me, but are hard to use on audacity. I think I'll try Cakewalk first and I'll be waiting for your Pro Tools course, if it was a fine DAW I'll purchase it.

Yeah, I know what you mean. Audacity is not really suitable for composing full songs with virtual instruments. It depends what instruments you want to use with it as well. Pro Tools First comes with a couple of virtual instruments. And the paid version has more of course. If you use a Mac then Logic includes some good ones. But I imagine you'd want to get your own anyway, which any premium DAW should be able to support. I mentioned Cakewalk just because it's free and has similar functionality to some paid DAWs, in case cost was an issue.
