if you meet a belgian that get offended by the word french fries, it's an idiot :) I'm from Liège and i can tell you why the americans called it french fries... it's because there's a verb "French" that means cutting in small pieces... wich is the way french fries are cut...
@@LyciaD3 yes it is because they are frenched. But how many people know that? Most think it is from France. So when people say french fries, 90 % or more believes it is French. So getting agitated about that does not make one an idiot. I used to serve foreigners all the time and i made sure they knew why it was called that. USA even changed the name into freedom fries because of dispute with the French. Such things do annoy me.
Thomas Vanhaste Jupiter ?? It’s ironic, right ? Try trappist like Blue chimay, rochefort, westmalle, achel,... or other very good beer like tripl karmeliet, saint bernardus,.... Few hundreds good choice but please not Jupiter
I think the story about “French” fries has something to do with American soldiers being served fries in Southern Belgium which is French speaking, so they called them French fries and it took off from there.
I am Belgian, born in Brussels but I live in the countryside. I love your video 👍👍👍 Neuhaus and the Dandoy house is the Top. Dandoy specializes in cookies called Spéculos, at St. Nicholas' Day in December, all Belgians eat 😋. I am very happy that you explained the difference between Brussels waffles and Liège waffles 👍😍
So lovely to see one of my favorite travel couples in my country 😍 I’m from Antwerp but I hope you enjoy your stay in Belgium!! If I can make a recommendation for a later time: you should definitely visit Bruges and Ghent, my all time favorites 😘
nope nope nope you call it french fries because in the 19 houndreds all the soldiers ate our fries and our soldiers spoke french but the soldiers where belgian so its Belgian Fries so yea just a quite little fact :)
It was such a pleasure meeting you both when you came through the Woodcutter. And from what I saw on this video, as well as others, you enjoyed your time in Belgium. Hope you're both doing great. Much love from Brussels 😁❤
I feel so much joy from watching your Brussels videos because I'm seeing two people being genuine and curious about the city I was born and raised. The way you captured the city is beautiful and I love how you tell little stories. I'm so glad you enjoyed your stay! I'm definitely subscribing :D PS : on every Saturday, there usually are various events organised in the city that all take place in the same spot you saw the people jumping and dancing. It's really fun to see, even if we just pass by to get to work or to buy something, we always see a crowd gathered to watch the many different shows! Oh and one more thing, if you ever feel like coming back again, museums are free on every first Wednesday of the month. :)
Good overview of the heart of Brussels, such a wonderful city to explore on foot. I hope you visit Bruges, too. It's totally wonderful and even more waffles, chocolates, frites, beer, and lace.
Love Belgium returning there for a few days next week, but going to be more based around Ypres and Flanders which I it love my last visit was amazing food and lovely people and tunning countryside full of history
I went back there a little over 2 years and hope to go back some day. Thank you for this amazing documentary of the beautiful area and of the fantastic food that you can enjoy in Belgium.
Awesome look at Brussels and the food! That would totally be my reaction to the waffle at 5:15! haha, looks so good! Thanks for sharing and happy travels!
@@DanegerAndStacey yes we have been.It was amazing. If you go back I recommend going to Bruge and Ghent as they are amazing. Just picture 15th century towns that the only change is electricity was added. The trains leave out of MIDI station every hour and the trip is about 35 min to an hour. YOUR VIDEOS ARE GREAT , and I am so glad you got to enjoy Brussels. We are going to Brussels, Cologne, Aachen and Bruge this year. Christmas markets in Europe are amazing. Love the party atmosphere and local artists.
Hey this brought back happy memories of staying with my brother and his family when he lived and worked in Brussels in the early 2000s. Belgian chocolate has to be the ultimate temptation and the waffles too. Don't forget Belgian beer - there are some awesome brands! One thing we were told to watch out for is the fact that Belgium is a bi-lingual country, - some speak French, some speak Flemish and it's best not to assume either!! Great video as always and 2:13 LOL :)
So true - we tried to pick up/remember a few words but they locals are all so bi-lingual it was insane, super impressive as well. The waffles were definitely the winner of the whole stay for us!
We also have german as an official language but it is mainly spoken in the eastern part of the country and represents a much smaller community than the french and flemish ones :)
Such a relaxed city and you too looked right at home. Belgian Kriek fruit beer btw is like nothing else on Earth... I couldn't drink it but my brother who lived in Brussels swore by it. Especially if it was more than a few years old. Great vlog. Really enjoyed seeing the city again.
I am belgian and droolin´here. Though you been slightly tourist-trapped for the waffels. But hey yummy is yummy, right? Great shots in the video, love it!
@@DanegerAndStacey we call them Liege waffles. As in the city Luik/ Liege. No critisism, just helping out to make you look better. thx for the reply. (people´s waffles works for me too, great find and i am gonna use that from now on) :-)
Ohh I went to Uni in Brussels & this gave me all the feels ! So happy you liked it, I feel like it's a real love it or hate it city for a lot of Belgians. If you ever come back be sure to visit Bruges (which is the most authentic city in Belgium, pretty much the whole city is national heritage & protected from getting modernized), Ghent & Antwerp !
@@DanegerAndStacey I would say: go to the North of Belgium for the architecture, because it was well-protected, but go to the South of Belgium for the picturesque (Dinant, Durbuy (smallest town in the world), Namur,...) and the nature.
Hi, I am from Antwerp and its such a beautifull and cozy city. You guys really have to visit the center of Antwerp - De Meir - Ghent and Bruges is also good Keep up the good work🤗🤗
Hmm... Freshly made Belgian waffles, looks delicious! Lucky people got to travel everywhere! Daneger, you have awesome facial expression while speaking.
This is not the food but the snacks ;-) And the fries are really to be complemented with your choice of sauce! There are in every fries-shop a choice of at least 10 different kinds of sauce. The more food-like version is Frites- carbonades / Frietjes Stoofvlees which adds a beef meat stew in traditional style to the fries :)
I feel like most tourists go to The Netherlands cuz it’s just more popular and there are a lot more stories of The Netherlands and its a lot bigger than Belgium. But what irritates me is that most tourists just think that The Netherlands is just the same as Belgium but with a slightly different accent. Cuz it’s really not.
2018 had 8.5 MILLION visitors staying the night in brussels alone , 2019 almost got to 10 million visitors staying the night i think after this year it will go past 10 million , so ... not that unpopular as you think then , is it ? those are numbers ... for brussels alone
You guys make me wanna get a gauffre de Liège now een tho i’ve eaten plenty of them my mouth is watering. I live close to Brussels and it seems to me you picked your foods well ( i would recommend dandoy for its cookies and speculoos, not for the waffles!)
Hey ! Really nice video I've watch a couple of video about Brussels and, small precision I'm from Brussels, this one is of the best I saw ! The thing is that, I don't know how, but you capture so perfectly the essence of it I felt like I really was there, felt nice haha ps: Clearly if someone speak about French fries I'm pissed of... Just say fries it's good haha
Cool video about Brussels. Little interesting trivia for you: the nice gallery with the glass roof where you bought your chocolate is where famous poet Paul Verlaine bought the gun he used to shoot his lover (and even more famous poet) Arthur Rimbaud. The gun has been sold not so long ago for almost half a million dollars...
@@DanegerAndStacey Yes. My father had the chance to check out the gun as he worked at the "Cinquantenaire" (Royal Museum of Army and Military History in Brussels). A place worth visiting by the way. Another trivia: the Cinquantenaire buildings are so special and impressive that Marilyn Manson shot one of his music videos there (song: This is the new sh*t). You can see it on RU-vid...
Never get fries without sauce :D Mayonaise is the number one choice. There's a "people's praline", from the Leonidas stores. Every Belgian town has a town hall, a postal office, a supermarket, a bakery, butcher, friture and a leonidas. You can go in and get one of the golden boxes (small, medium, large, etc.). They offer a variety of pralines and Leonidas has classics (like the white one with the almond) and newer variations they mix up. It's what you get your girlfriend's mother, your own mother, yourself if you're feeling particularly Belgian that day :D Glad you enjoyed our country, other cities like Hasselt, Leuven, Gent, Brugge, Antwerpen are beautiful too!
To answer your question about fries: (sorry fellow Belgians) Fries, as we know it today, where invented by a French dude. He saw the dollar marks in his eyes and expanded his business to Belgium. But Belgians weren't very fond of the taste of it, so we made those fries better. pre-bake the potato-fries at 160°C till they are soft (yes, you need to squeeze them to know), then let the fries cool down, next bake them again at 180°C till they are golden-yellow-ish... ad a pinch of salt and enjoy! Great video btw x
Ow so nice ! I saw your vids of Mexico ..i was thinking ow nice ! I was born in Mexico city ..but raised in YUCATAN - puerto morelos ...i stayed there until i was 15 and then i moved to Belgium . I really like europe . But every year i go twice to mexico. Cause i have family in Mexico city and yucatan.
I lived for over 20 years in brussels have eaten amazing food there each hour of the day. If you know where you can go to a place and have an amazing dich anytime.
Before corona, we have every week-end en event in the centre of the city, Bruxelles it's à city of event, fun, and Joy....my city, born and raise in Belgium
I live in Belgium and I visited Brussels only 2 time’s, but didn’t go around too much. You probably saw more then me in Brussels. I wish I could see more tho
The Liege waffle as Belgian eat it plain (the ones you call vanilla). They've introduced the other variants for tourists in Belgium lol ;-). In my opinion (as a Belgian) the best Liege waffle is the one that's still slightly gooey :)
Your facial expressions when you are eating the waffles are so cute!!! I think the 1 person who unliked this video is just a jealous bunny who wants waffles too!
Haha we try and avoid that at all costs. Our friends and family who have been with us are often shocked we've managed to film anything because it's all done so quickly and instinctively. That feels more real and genuine as well 🤣
Thank you for trying out the waffles from my hometown (Liège) in the city that became my home 20 years ago :-) Happy that you enjoyed our gorgeous waffles. The traditional version is sugar only, no chocolate but I guess since you were in the center of the city and the "tourist area", they offer different options. I used to go there when I was a student and remember very well this "corner" waffle place which has been there since I first came to Brussels in 1995 :-)
@@DanegerAndStacey Is it still possible to send packages outside EU? In any case; sending you some comfort (even if not comfort food) because that works without borders or customs. This is going to end at some point and you'll get to come back and eat them fresh :-)
@@DanegerAndStacey I just realised you were in NZ! Gosh, I'd better try and let you taste another kind of belgian (actually more flemish) waffles. These would survive the journey to NZ :-)
They say the first fried chips were baked by a German in Paris. this was apparently in the form of a fish. But I'm afraid we'll never be sure who came first.
Dandoy, you should have speculoos, there are way better spots to get waffles, same thing with chocolate. Neuhaus is a big player in Belgium, better to go to the small artisanal shops to get the authentic experience. If you need any tips on Belgian food feel free to ask me
@@DanegerAndStacey yeah, you never get the full experience without a local. I always try to go to countries where I know someone. Getting to know people I do by staying in hostels. But I'm slowly running out of countries that I know people at. 50 and counting
A praline is made using Belgian chocolate (nowadays even Swiss chocolate but packaged in Belgium hence the 'made in Belgium' trademark) so to a Belgian, they are not considered as the real deal. If you want to taste more yummy and way less expensive chocolate (like locals do), simply visit a supermarket/grocery store and buy brands like Jacques or Cote d'Or or Callebaut. You can get them with all kinds of stuffings too. Price comparison: 15€ for 500gr pralines (Neuhaus/Godiva/..) as to 7€ for 500gr of chocolate bars of the forementioned brands. Pralines are eaten or given on special occasions and are more 'snobby' due to their expensiveness and please visit a 'chocolatier' (you will thank me later 😉). If you are into history/culture/architecture, please visit Brussels/Antwerp/Leuven/Brugge/Gent/the Ardennes (Battle of the Bulge) and Ieper (Flemish fields). So breezing through my little Belgium will last more then 2 days 🙂 Oh: and please visit a small local brewery.. a tasty beer awaits you. Enjoy your stay 👍
In fact, what you call "normal waffles" (the Brussels ones) are not the common waffles. We eat them at fairs (usually with our hands despite the toppings) but not usually at home. At home, we do plainer kinds of waffles. Not even the Liège ones because they make the waffle iron so dirty with the sugar chunks caramelising in it ! There are plenty of recipies. I would say every household used to have their own ;-). I supppose now most people would buy them ready-made in the supermarkets but I still bake my own.
Definitely the "people's" waffles from Liége for walking snacks...🤗 Sauce Andalusian for the friets is even less touristy (and delicious)...🤓 Did you venture into Café Delirium... Cutest label for 🍺 (has a pink elephant)
We checked out Delirium - overwhelming selection huh! We actually preferred some of the other bars though, where there's 20 or so on tap and the staff can chat about them. Wish we could pack a Liege waffle with us daily 🤣
Hold on, you can get Westvleteren in the Asian Wok? 😂 Sounds about right. It is the rarest beer available in cafés, bars or restaurants but available in Brussels in a wok... As a Belgian myself, I'd call that typically Belgium. We love our exceptional circumstances, overly complicated laws and strange decisions. Extremely weird to see a place I spent so much time in on youtube.
Why didn’t you eat the Liege (liheyge) waffle from Maison Dandoy?? 😭 they’re the best !! Instead of a touristy corner street shop, that’s a pity but yeah. We don’t use toppings much on our waffles 🙂 they’re just good on their own.
hahaha we eat the vanilla one all the time, we eat it during brakes. Trust me we love chocolat and you should really go to Antwerp, Bruges, Gent. Btw you can eat a different praline for everyday and it would take you over 100years before you have eaten them all. And lol you don't have to care about what type of sauce you take with your fries. The thing you should be mad about is that you didn't eat stew wtih your fries and a beer that's a must do combo!
Antwerp, Bruges, Gent are all on the list for a return soon! We did have a stew fries and beer in one of our other videos, aint leaving town with out it!
I find it very funny how a traditional thing in every big city in the world has a 'touristy' version :p The liege waffles are a great example , most (if not all :D) Belgians eat it without any addition. I know that in Prague you've got the same thing with their spiraled cone, the fillings are purely for the tourist :P
@@DanegerAndStacey I would be they're better eaten hot and fresh! there's a link to a recipe for cinnamon Liège waffels! www.gastronomie-wallonne.be/gastro/desserts/gaufre_liegeoise_cannelle_vraie.html It is the authentic recipe for liège waffels without pearl sugar but it's in french... I can translate it for you if you like! I assure you, you cannot hate this waffle! It's like a warm hug of pure love!
how come you could go on top of the tower, it's completely private :'( (and yes, advice from a local, don't put anything on your Liege waffles, it's already a lot on its own :p)
My #1 reason I want to visit Belgium is for all the food. (Especially chocolate and waffles) I think I might have drooled a little watching them put the chocolate inside the Liege waffle! I want to eat all the chocolate
You're so right about "french fries". There's nothing French about fries (take a look at the border, French come to Belgium for fries for a reason). Also, just FYI Liège is pronounced "li-e (as in egg) g (as in large)". Bruges and Ghent should definitely be next for you.
