is blender getting rid of Addons? 

it feels like they want us to install all addons through the extension site, which has to be free and open source

I'm pretty sure it's much ado about nothing, as others have suggested. There is no way the Blender Foundation would suddenly and without warning cut something that's really the lifeblood of the Blender ecosystem.

if that was the case, they would not categorize addons as legacy addons

to be clear this is speculation, seeing that the addons section is getting hidden, though still there, right now in 4.2 it seems they are prioritizing free and open source add-ons, for the suing part good luck with that

Of course you can, just use a version of Blender that supports them. Honestly the worse thing they could do is stop supporting these developers and I think the idea they would is ignorant on its face!

@@blendereverything Well, you are not using an official release but developer branches. If you can/can't see something, it doesn't mean it's gonna stay that way. It's like saying "This building is not gonna have bathrooms!" before it having floors done.

@@blendereverything I honestly believe 2 things. One, its too early to tell, that could change tomorrow. Also, two, menus get shuffled all the time. How many people knew about the normals menu before someone put it in a youtube video? Or, how to add shake to a camera with the noise filter? Baseline, I think until it is released in full, its too soon to make judgment calls. Also, Blender Foundation makes a percentage from paid add-ons as far as I know, why would they mess with that?

@@TopChannel1on1 ok, I'm going on what an add-on creator told me. Perhaps they made that choice. I wish Blender would stop trying to be other software packages. We chose Blender for a reason.

Fair enough! the issue is that new features take too long to be added to blender, while there many developers who can contribute to blender, blender code standard is quite high for most, that most code that is acceptable for addons would not fly as a feature of blender, but these features are needed,

Blender is not free. The Blender Foundation receives money in the form of grants and donations from large Industry sponsors like Epic Games and Nvidia. Otherwise they would not be able to develop Blender to the degree that they have. Plugin Creators need to be paid for their work.

You can’t expect people to develop some of the amazing tools we get as paid addon for free. The economics just don’t work for that, which means we won’t get those tools. And that sucks for us as users, but also for Blender as a program because it will loosing those features means loosing competitiveness. Being paid for your work is not greed. It’s a basic human right. Nothing in the world is free, and Blender add ons are almost all very reasonably priced. Also don’t think for a second the Blender Foundation is working for free. They receive around 2 million dollars a year in donations from various companies and individuals, and they use that money to pay their employees. There seems to be this insane notion that employees of nonprofit organizations don’t get paid for their work. They get a salary just like everyone else. What nonprofit means is that when they have money left over, instead of paying that out to the employees (usually higher ups in bigger companies) as bonuses and such, that money is reinvested back into the company to improve the product/service.

​@OnyxStudiosInteractive wow. The sheer ignorance here. Blender isnt free. Lol not one single person has ever paid for the program. The costs that go in are far and beyond seperate to its COST. AND even more simply NO THEY DONT. Crybaby capitalism. Find something free exploit it then whine when youre rebuted and cut off. Get over yourself.
