I always have people asking me about my reliability or what problems I have so I wanted to take a step back and put this video out there for those of you that are still wondering.
Overall BMW’s are great, are they the perfect car brand? Yes. Just kidding, no brand is perfect and never will be, but my experience with bmw so far has been more enjoyable than any other car brand so far.
N55, N20, S55, B58, B48, S58, and so many more bmw engines have been proven to be very reliable.

I got into my BMW thinking all the negative things you hear but overall, not a single day have I've gotten in my car and regretted it! It's like every brand. There's the negative and the positives with them.

Exactly! The only people I’ve ever heard of or known that regretted buying a bmw were people who bought ones that were already clapped out or already showing signs of poor treatment/maintenance

BMWs punish you if you are cheap and don’t take care of it. If maintenance is on schedule and you take care of the car, it will take care of you

2017 F22 Gen 1 b58 about to touch 100k miles and she still going strong. Same setup as you but I’m adding an intake and XHP trans tune next week

I've owned a 2013 335 xDrive with the N55/ZF 8 speed since new. Currently has 131k miles. Bone stock. I've had to change the oil filter housing gaskets and valve cover gasket due to small oil leaks (DIY videos are on RU-vid, not that difficult to do). I changed the plugs and coil packs during the valve cover gasket change. Recently, had a minor battery charging issue that turned out to be just a bad electrical connection. No other issues/failures to date (*knocks on wood*). Just regular maintenance (oil, filters, brakes, tires).

That’s awesome man, those are very minor issues I’d take all day for being over 100k miles. N55 has been proven to be a great motor, hope you’ve enjoyed it💪🏼

Well my 08 e92 has cost me 5k in 3 years but I love it and she's done 150k miles 😂 2 years time the plan is for an 18 m240i that will only be for weekend fun. Gotta get that uprated steering wheel with the digital display on it looks amazing.

I drove my 2017 m240i from 60k-120k hard miles in 2 years and never had an issue

Do it man, tuning your car is a game changer. My stage 2+ E40 tune is around 460-470whp. Unfortunately I haven’t gone against any S55’s on that tune but I think a B58 on e40-e50 is pulling a S55 on pump gas. Hopefully I’ll get lined up with one soon I can post

B58s are really good, people still driving it with 150k - 200k km on with with Stage 2 / 3 5-700Hp, without any problems.

Exactly bro, my buddy is pushing about 600whp with like 110k miles and engine wise it’s been great, but he’s twisted an axle 😂

Go test drive some B58’s and I’m sure you’ll make up your mind real quick haha. An IS is rare tho so I’m sure you’ll miss it but you definitely won’t be downgrading

Would you say its worth spending the extra money to get an m240i over a 230i? I've been looking at them recently and both seem like solid choices 🤔

230i’s are great cars but if you’re willing to pay the extra cost for the M240i it’s definitely worth the money. I also think if you buy a 230i, you may always wish you got a M240i instead, but it wouldn’t be the other way around if you got an M240

I’ve owned both, I went from a 230 to an M240i. Get the 240 if you can. It uses a similar amount of fuel but is much faster, then engine makes a better sound and has more character and the car feels more special as a result. It has the type of motor that could only come in a BMW vs a (admittedly very great) turbo 2.0 that so many cars use these days. I found myself wishing for for more from the 230i whilst with the 240 it feels like you get a lot of car for your money. My car is now stage 1 with over 400hp and despite physically looking much like a 230i they’re just worlds apart.

Personally, I think a 335i would be a great first car as long as you get a 2011+ with the N55 motor. That would be a super fun and reliable motor with plenty of power capabilities for your first car

I own a e90 N55 bought it with 78k miles it now has about 85k miles after about a year of driving runs good. This isn’t my daily just a toy mostly city and weekend driving. when I first bought it I started a fresh log to track and did basically a tune up oil change did the spark plugs and coil pack and cleaned the Vanos solenoids it’s now full bolt on stage 2+ running great IMO if you can find one for a good price stock with no mods is best if possible. Higher mileage N54 and N55 have mostly the same issues oil leaks from the oil pan gasket, oil filter housing and valve cover. Typical weak points are plastic piping, intercooler radiator. upgrading the charge pipes, boost pipe, intake inlet pipe, radiator and intercooler will help with reliability. Especially these things are a must if tuning the car. On higher mileage ones turbos, water pump, HPFP and LPFP go bad but if you can get service records you can see if any of this has been done already. Every used cars is a risk because you don’t know how the previous owners took care of it but these cars can be reliable and fun if maintenance is taken care of especially if you can do it yourself and save on cost. If it has the N55, sure. Just expect to fix some things and your good to go. If it has the N54 stay away from it unless it comes with brand new everything, or your planning to do a crazy full rebuild with DI delete.

The b58 def not bulletproof. A quick search would show how many blown b58 engines have been reported but it’s a lot solid than the N55

There are a lot of factors that go into that. The amount of blown B58’s that were stock tune or running simple OTS tunes is incredibly small and not common at all. A stock B58 motor has proven to be able to handle upwards of 600whp reliably, but that’s also when it’s recommended to start upgrading some possible weak points to maintain reliability

Also, most of the blown B58’s that were running stock internals under 600whp were blown because of mechanical error with meth injection, inaccurate e85 mixes or even poorly designed custom tunes

Complete garbage 🗑️.. the b58 is by a mile more reliable then the n55 and way stronger in every way with forged pistons and rods being a closed deck and a bottom end of diesel b57. So stop making excuses talking nonsense when you obviously don’t know shit

Not correct,the n55 had also problems with charge pipes cracking and water pumps ,on top of it n55 was a weaker engine than the n54 which was an open deck unlike the b58 that is closed deck

Depends on a lot of factors, but from my experience and the from those around me they seem to hold up pretty well these days
