The market has probably reached the saturation point. The number of people willing to pay higher prices for nicer shrimp is limited. I saw this back when I bred and sold leopard geckos. A leopard gecko that sold for $500 at a reptile show over ten years ago now sells for $30.00 at Petco. (Or even cheaper when on sale.)

Well I understand that 100%. I too like that they have come way down in price, but im just sad the domestic breeders aren't feasibly making profit at 3 bucks a shrimp... and I'll happily pay more for a healthy line and genetically clean of defects line.. but if you don't intend on breeding and or selling, then the cheaper ones are understandably more desirable

Maybe plants are something people should look at if they are trying to supplement their income. I took clippings from a 15 gallon cube from my bi weekly trimming instead of throwing them out. And I was expecting a few dollars at best. But I got nearly 15 dollars from clippings! Now I’m seeing dollar signs becaue I got grow out totes choked with plants but I don’t want to saturate the pet store with plants I want them paying high because the plant tanks were empty probably because of the pandemic.

There is at least one advantage to a cull/skittle collection of shrimp - they tend to have better genetics as they're not selectively bred (or are no longer part of a selective line) and are great for beginners to make mistakes with. While I think pure lines are great, I find I have the most healthy shrimp in my skittles lot than any other tank😅

I've had pretty bad luck with neocaridinas, but man I LOVE babaultis. I'm currently keeping both zebra and green and if you can get them to survive shipping they are extremely hardy. I especially love the color variation--my zebras stay mostly clear but one is red-tinged all over and my biggest (and berried) female has a rusty stripe down her back, while the green babaultis are everything from light green to dark green to orange to one who's brown with a bright green stripe. Not the species for someone who wants uniform color in their shrimp, but I think they're awesome :) I would love to see more of the babaulti varieties start becoming available in the US--I'd find room for another tank just to start breeding some more of them, haha.

There are a lot of restrictions on importing fish currently due to limited flights so many import facilities are ordering a lot of shrimp instead to make up for the lack of fish. You get over 1000 shrimp per bag so it makes sense if you have a lot of empty tanks at your facility. I work at a import facility and they are ordering a lot more shrimp because of this reason and had to cut prices to compete with other importers.

Hey alex, I was wondering if you could give me some advice- i have a 9gal tank that is a couple years old that used to be a snail only tank- i ended up adding 10 blue dream shrimp to start a colony (pond snails and one black devil spike snail were the only inhabitants). When i got the shrimp I also got new plants for my tank- unfortunately they brought scuds with them. I also have wanted to try a betta fish, so I purchased a second 5 gallon tank with the hopes to move the shrimp there after it had cycled. So of course after a month or so of growing, i added some of the plants to this new, cycling tank- and thats when i noticed the scuds for the first time. :( second 5 gallon tank was near the end of its cycle too! My 9gallon has at least 4 berried females and one has given birth. Im afraid for my shrimplets as ive read conflicting info online, but i dont want to take chances. I stripped the 5 gallon cycling tank of all plants and substrate- dosed ammonia and im going to see if any of the bb are alive in the filter media but i know ill most likely have to start from scratch. Once the new tank is ready i plan to net as many shrimp as I can to transfer over. If you were me, and planned on having the betta in the 9 gallon anyway, would you bother tearing apart the old tank to exterminate the scuds or would a single betta be able to safely regulate the population? Im not a fan of the aesthetics of scuds but if it would provide enrichment and was possible to be controlled, i would be open to the idea of keeping them. Feeling conflicted right now about what to do, but for now I can only watch for my shrimplets and hope the new tank is ready ASAP. Also invested in the shrimp back in march, with hopes to eventually sell all the color lines after starting with blue!! Looks like Ill have to switch gears. Id love to breed betta but have nowhere near the space for it!! Maybe I can still turn the blues into some pocket change for more hobby stuff, at least! Thanks for all you do!
@Fishtory
@Fishtory 3 года назад
Definitely only sell to hobbyists and just work on quality, shrimp consistency and you should be able to sell them for 5 to 7 bucks to hobbyists probably. As for scuds...if the shrimp tank doesn't have babies, you may just take out the Adults and kill the scuds... however betta will eat scuds and baby shrimp at a similar rate...so you may want a dragon micro goby or small trio to 5 small rasboras to clear out the scuds
@rainbowaviator7096
@rainbowaviator7096 3 года назад
@@Fishtory unfortunately it does have babies in it already, ive only spotted a hanful but im afraid the others are all about to give birth as well :( if i get an airstone and a bucket could i perhaps quarantine the shrimp there? Ill see if the ammonia is converted tomorrow morning, if im lucky enough to have preserved the bb maybe ill try moving a nonberried shrimp over... fingers crossed!!

It just requires maybe a little more volume than a few tanks and a few different kinds to provide that variety. I’m hopeful we could see a new wave of domestic growers of a lot of species, but it comes with a lot of challenges.
@Fishtory
@Fishtory 3 года назад
Could be true. I think another issue is when prices go up... people generally keep the markup the same ...when prices go down...they will let the mark up increase some ...so maybe shrimp dropped from 3 bucks wholesale 9 retail but if wholesale goes to 50 cents...it won't ever be 150 retail .... so if a store is honestly pro-local breeders... there definitely is meat left on the bone for us breeders, due to the reasons you stated.

I believe that the biggest hindrance to the hobby in the U.S. is wages. If people got paid enough we would be able to actually make money off fish and raise the price. Also we need to (as a society) have standards as to where/how we get stuff. Like don't get stuff made by forced labor or a corp who's owners makes hundreds more than the actual workers. We need to demand companies be more like aquarium co-op

@007longboarder 3 года назад
The first part of your argument is counterintuitive. Raising prices when people get paid more will prevent people from buying. It's basically keeping things the same as they are now if you do that. The last part of your statement I'd agree with.
@shadeaquaticbreeder2914
@shadeaquaticbreeder2914 3 года назад
@@007longboarder if you raise the price of things with the increase in wages it is effectively no change. In the US the problem is things like housing and healthcare costs. And statistically it doesn't make people stop buying, raising the price makes people care for them more tho and I'm all for that. I'd rather neons be like $5 but they almost never die and live long bc of how we'd breed them and care for them, and BE ABLE TO care for them

@@shadeaquaticbreeder2914 I have no issues with spending more for higher quality. What I'm proposing is that if costs remain the same people could buy more and/or higher quality when they receive higher wages. The problem with raising the prices on items when people make more is that people will still be unable to enter the hobby. As an example, look at college tuition costs. Colleges realize that students are either receiving tuitions or willing to take out more loans. Therefore they've increased the cost of earning a degree without effectively changing the quality of said degree. I know this may be apples and oranges but my point is that people who are trying to buy shrimp/fish will still be unable to do so with cost increases just like students who go to college will be unable to pay or paying debt well after and effectively no better off.

I live in Canada and see people charging minimum $6 up to $16 for neocardina shrimp. Living in the maritimes there isn’t a lot of selection for shrimp so you are forced to buy within those price ranges. Meaning selling shrimp for profit is still a viable option here at least. But you do have a point and I’m starting to see these bulk retailers hitting the market with $3 shrimp for a super high grade shrimp. (Although with diseases).

I know I need to separate them, but I'm just thankful that I have a good colony now!! Future project will be separating them back out and getting the lines straight!! One good thing about it is I added three different colonies of shrimp.. some came from aquahuna, some came from LRB(Lucas) and some came from Ro Ro's Aquatics I still have three great lines showing in my tub. Lots of color for sure and quality shrimp. I can say however I haven't gone into trade any in yet with an LFS.. I really wanted to get them started the right way.. I do have a guy in Kentucky who said he would buy them from me, so we'll just have to see how it plays out!! Thanks for the Stream!! Have a great night everyone!!🙏🌿🐟🌿🦐🌿💚

I haven't, but I just use a little net made from plastic ...not a normal fish net... they jump backwards into it, and the bottom of it hold water rather than a normal net...so they stay trapped as long as you keep it moving
