Is Brontosaurus Back?

In this video, I wanted to talk about Brontosaurus, and whether Brontosaurus is back? Should you use Brontosaurus for that characteristic long neck dinosaur from the Jurassic Period? Or is it a misnomer, an antiquated term that should be thrown out, for the more scientifically accurate name of Apatosaurus? This is the story of Brontosaurs and Apatosaurus.

I just wanted to say I really miss your content. Your vast library of in depth paleontology and sedimentary geology content is unmatched in quality and quantity on ANY video platform. I hope you return to making content soon. I understand though, I'm certain it's extremely busy being a professor.

I must say that you sir are one of my favorite RU-vidrs. Thank you very much for lettimg me watch your course material. I have been watching for years. You have been very informative. I hope you stumble across a complete fossilized skeleton of a previously undiscovered and unnamed dinosaur.

There should be an option to appeal RU-vid Kids videos to remove their kid status (with reasons) so we can use the comment section or save it on a playlist, because for me, removing me the option to comment is an infringement to the 1st Amendment.

I’m 20, from the uk. failed a lot at school due to sickness, wanted to be a palaeontologist, could do a degree in biology then move to palaeontology. But I don’t believe in myself. I don’t know if it’d suit me, I really don’t know if I am good enough to do it. Trying to weigh up a job in law and a job in palaeontology is so hard. It’s unbelievable how hard of a decision it is. I would be so grateful if I could just have a talk with you about your life. It’d possibly change my life. When I think about doing law I have this sinking in my stomach feeling that just makes me feel empty. But I know I’d be good at it.

It depends. If someone is 8 years old and they tell me that Brontosaurus is their favorite dinosaur, I just say "That's awesome." If they're 12 I say "That's awesome..." and I might use it as an excuse to give a little bit of a history lesson that includes details like "Apatosaurus, wrong skulls, bone wars, diplodocus, pterodactyls aren't true dinosaurs but they are closely related" and other such odds and ends that an adult might find boring but maybe with a kid it could start a life long fascination with paleofauna. If he's 27, I just give him the hairy eyeball and find the nearest exit.
@PaulTheSkeptic
@PaulTheSkeptic Год назад
@PlessieNessie Well, there's a hairy navel. Orange juice, peach schnapps and vodka. Then there's a highball which is just another word for cocktail. But yeah, I could see there being a cocktail called a hairy eyeball. They're called damn near everything else. But it's an expression meant to convey that you're looking at someone with suspicion or doubt. Through narrowed eyes I suppose. Maybe gin meant to represent sophistication and thus, skepticism, tequila to represent the doubt. Mix with soda and a splash of sweet and sour mix and garnish with two cocktail onions and a small sprig of parsley, served in a highball glass of course. That sounds terrible frankly.

Does a cladistic study account for variations in individuals? If my fossilized remains were to be found, there would be significant differences between me and other homonids, even though I'm pretty sure I'm a Homo Sapiens.

Ben, listen to this Bob Bakker interview on Paleocast GSA 3. Paleocast is a solid scientific site interviewing Neil Shubin, Simon Conwey Morris, Phil Currie, Jacob Vinter and a host of cutting-edge researchers, sites, methodologies including a whole lot more aspects of Paleontology. Bob loves Brontosaurus for some interesting reasons. I personally am indifferent to the showmanship tied into this debate, but deeply interested in proper cladeograms of all life-forms. I would love your comments on Dr Bakker's musings, for he is a reputable expert. I highly value your learning and enjoy your sober scientific approach. Learned a lot from you over the last few years. Keep-up the good work bringing geo-paleo science to the general public! 5 Stars *****

The best sounding name should always be the one that sticks. The word "Brontosaurus" evokes a feeling of largness. The name sounds tough like a dinosaur. One can imagine how immense the creature is by the mere sound of its name. It is therefore a better name. "Apatosaurus" sounds weak and spineless as if the person saying it should speak with a lisp. The name does not have any meat. An apatasaurous should be a small cute puppy like creature. Something you could pat on its back and say, "you're such a good little boy". What child is going to enjoy calling a gigantic behemoth an apatasaur. His peers would tease him. He would forever be deemed a pencil neck geek. All dinosaurs should have names that sound gigantic. The words should fill the room. Children should cower in fear when they hear about such legendary greatness.

So... Compsognathus should have a name that makes it sound gigantic?
@hiramlawson2824
@hiramlawson2824 2 года назад
@@linkthepig4219 A good name aides in learning. It should be both fun to say and descriptive. If a name has too many difficult syllables that don't easily fall off of the tounge it's quite possibly a bad name. Poor nomenclature can ruin a students desire to learn. Things shouldn't be too complex for a 5th grader to say or remember unless the subject makes it necessary.
@linkthepig4219
@linkthepig4219 2 года назад
@@hiramlawson2824 True, but what about names of smaller dinosaurs and prehistoric animals? Some of those shouldn't sound scary or gigantic. Like I said, compsognathus for example is a hard animal to choose a name for because they weren't terrifying or deadly. Sometimes names do fit smaller creatures, like ammonites (which is fun to say and sounds like some sort of weird sea animal) or velociraptors (which is again, a fun word to say, and the 'veloci' makes it sound fast), but some other names I don't see having improvements, such as ornithomimus, spinosaurus (which is a memorable name yet doesn't sound scary or huge) or hypsilophodon.
@hiramlawson2824
@hiramlawson2824 2 года назад
@@linkthepig4219 you are definitely correct. I was stuck on larger dinosaurs because I was thinking about the size of brontosaurus.

I would love some more about Hastalis(modern day mako familiy) Escheri, Great Whites, Megalodon, Angustidens, Auriculatis and the cow shark familly (Hexa,Notorynchus). When we already typing maybe the Squalodon and other Toothwales that swim at the time of the Megalodon.

If the International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature (by a vote of 22 to 1) is capable of successfully having the older name of Tylosteus (a somewhat bad name) done away with in favor of Pachycephalosaurus (a very bad name), then surely something can be done to have Apatosaurus (an absolute dud of a name) officially replaced by Brontosaurus (the most awesome name ever). Look, I know that it’s important for science to keep things well organized & to stick to standards. I know that’s important, I really do. But just this ONE TIME, scientists should do what our human hearts are imploring & begging for us to do, & make Brontosaurus the official name. Just this one single time exception, let’s allow this little bit of humanity to creep into the structured framework of science, & go with the name which is more emotionally resonant & awe inspiring. Just this once. No matter what scientists do, I however will always refer to that most awesome of dinosaurs by the most awesome of names it deserves. I will always say Brontosaurus. I encourage others do likewise. Perhaps we, the public, can force the hand of scientists. No more Apatosaurus. Don’t even acknowledge that name. Let’s drive the name Apatosaurus into oblivion via neglect. Never use it, even when informed to do so. Keep saying Brontosaurus. “Brontosaurus.” You know it’s right.

Atlas was the titan who bore the world on his shoulders, not Atlanta. Atlantis is the mythological sunken city of Greek mythos.

Atlanta is a female out of Greek mythology. Fleet footed but with a weakness for golden apples. It is also a city in Georgia. I have no clue how you confuse Atlas, a Titan, with Atlanta.

The technical term is "junior synonym", so to me you should be able to use both names, at least be able to use brontosaurus informally.
