Original owner of a 2001 Discovery Series II here: I'll tell you this; I'm never selling it, and your videos have validated my opinion! Thank you, and happy trails!
Well maintained, I think it is a good vehicle over all. A lot of times what ends up happening is that cost of ownership is a bit higher than other vehicles and people just don't take good care of them.
Land rover ownership is the quickest way to learn how to become a mechanic. Love my old 2004 with a passion, she might look a bit rough, she might be called a few choice words but parts are cheap, simple to fix and she looks better after each bump or scrape.
I really loved that truck! I still say you should turn TFL Classics should the 15+ yo suvs. Like 6 month reviews on these older hummers, Monteros, Sidekicks, Trackers, Wagoneers.... Etc. All of the classics. But they all must go to Moab at least once!
I've had three Discovery 2 and they've all been amazing! Best part is here in Canada they're so cheap and plentiful you can get them for around $2,500 Canadian so it's cheaper to just replace with another used one then to rebuild the engines!
My 1996 Discovery "Disco" was awesome. It went through anything, reasonable, I threw at it. It made climbs with 140,000 miles on the clock at altitude when my friends new Montero overheated and while it had its electrical sensor issues for ABS and traction control, they never stopped it or left me stranded. The only time it stranded me was due to the expansion tank cracking. That happens to all plastic expansion tanks with age and mileage. I MISS MY ROVER! I wish I had seen your TFL for sale and spoke with you about it. I am in the Lone Tree area and would have been quite interested. Thanks for helping to educate others as to the charms of the "Best 4x4 by far!"
I guess you lot didnt see where they took it in the 9000 miles, the strain on all parts offroad for “such” a unreliable landy is mega impressive!!! Here in the UK they get a bad rep because people run them way beyond service intervals and just abuse them
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again Land Rover: you can’t know how great they are until you’ve owned one. And if you haven’t then you can shut up about it breaking
I love the look of the 2nd gen discovery it has such a retro look it makes for a good head turner on the road, it looks like something that belongs in a safari in Africa and not in 7 am rush hour traffic. It reminds me sm of the 76 series land cruiser
I love that you guys have the testicular fortitude to feature Land Rover in your fleet. Very entertaining and it’s great to see the naysayers squirm as the LRs continue to do their thing. There’s just something about them that naysayers will never understand. Gonna miss your D2.... but bring in the D3!
Boone Docker im also interested in doing this! But scared to take it on. Never have I ever done an engine swap but the Rover V8 is going strong for now.
@@Confindencedrugee I bought one with a blown engine. It's getting the Cummins and a Jeep tranny because there is a kit that will bolt right up. I am seeing a few issues already, but nothing seems insurmountable at this point.
I own 3 of them now and they’re a great buy. In the summer you can buy them cheap when they all start overheating and then fix them up and have fun with them and then sell them in the fall for a nice profit. They’re one of the easiest vehicles possible to work on and whatever problem it has someone else has figured it out online and explained how to fix it or made a video on it. If your a little handy with tools I highly recommend getting one.
I’ve had a Discovery and 2 Discovery 2s, and probably 150K in miles amongst the 3, all used off road. The mechanicals were rarely an issue, but electrics proved to be the biggest issue in all three. I suspect that you would have found some of those issues with a longer hold period. I would stay away from the manual Discovery unless you primarily intend to use it off road. Off road, the manual was fantastic and made everything feel of one piece. On road, it was very hard to shift smoothly as the drivetrain had some funky slop in it that I was told was “normal” by Land Rover mechanics on both the east and west coasts. That said, the Discovery was much more reliable than the Discovery 2. I suspect someone is still out there enjoying our first red Disco!
Just picked up a 2000 model. I’ve put a lot of work into it that I’ve done myself. I absolutely love it, I never thought that I could enjoy one of these sooo much. I’m hooked, I also daily a JK and can’t wait to compare the two off road.
Starting from 2007 I'm still driving my '04 Discovery and loving every moment of it. Oh, and it's a successor of my '99 Discovery - first Landy that I bought in 2002 :)
I love my disco. Got EBC green pads and EBC rotors front and rear for about $350 Great upgrade, brakes are so much better, which also makes the traction control work so much better. If you know where to get the parts and have decent shadetree mechanic skills it's not expensive to maintain
I have one ... rescued it from an auction and have put thousands into it. Have some more work under the hood and outside cosmetic work to do. Going to keep it another 6 months - a year before selling it. Love it though! There’s nothing out there that looks like it! Beautiful vehicle!
So so sad to see this go. I was hoping to catch you guys on the trail with it with the Co Land Rover group. I love that thing! I am intrigued to see what you do to the D3 though (I own a LR3).
I did have one like yours in Imperial Grey but mine was super unreliable. I had it in New York and yearly state inspections were always super costly with ridiculous costs for parts and labor. Super cool vehicle but mine was always frustrating, I think you were very lucky as they have a terrible reputation for unreliability for a reason.
I have been following the D2 for the length of time you have owned it. Coincidentally, I bought a D2 around the same time. I built it up and has become a total beast off road. Although, I’m debating on selling and getting an LR3. D2 gas mileage is terrible and not practical to take on a long road trip trip. Mine is the rare Kindversand Orange.
I sold my 2004 D2 last year as well, when I bought my F350. Loved that truck almost as much as my Range Rover Classic - and wouldn't have sold it but for the fact that it was really quite rusty underneath and I didn't feel as though it had good long-term prospects. Now I'm looking for a clean 03-04 D2 with a blown motor or trans. Would like to put a modern engine in it.
My '04 is in the same boat. Rust. How did you make out with finding another one without rust? I am hoping to find one rust free, then keep my baby for parts. Poor girl.
I just bought the Land Rover Dis 2 01’ for $500, has a gasket leak, but nothing to serious. I am fixing it up to sell, but am falling in love with it! I love everything about it. I do have a question. Did your version 04 roll when it was in park? I watched your video when you said you chalked the wheels so it didn’t go anywhere when you jacked it up. I was wondering if that was an issue or a feature that the vehicle when pushed rolls in either direction as far as you can push it, while in park. I saw a forum that discussed it, but I’m wondering if this is really something that needs attention or is fine as long as you use the e-brake???
Good to see the LR behaved nicely for you folks. After the initial maintenance to get my 02 Sequoia to "0," not much has gone wrong, and when it has, it's been manageable. 300k with no drama.
I just bought a mint 2004 Disco 2 for $13k. 42,000 original miles, one owner, and immaculate interior and exterior. Everything works, no leaks, no warning lights etc. The original plastic covering from the dealership is even still on the carpet under the mats. Planning on adding a bunch of overlanding gear like this one, as I went from a 2021 Gladiator to this. Got rid of a car payment and about $35k worth of debt by selling the jeep and paying cash for the disco. Hopefully it holds together well.
I’m going to have to join the peanut gallery and say I too am seriously going to miss this old beast of a gal. The thing was just a pleasure to watch work it’s charms
It's funny to see people falling in love with these aluminum beasts. I own a D2 and it's on sale cause I got a D3 tdv6 and it's hard to see them go.. Love and hate kind of relationship.. 😂
I'm sad but at the same time hyped, to see the new build! Also the "all-new" Disco from the clip at 8:00 is my absolute dream LOL! Keep on climbing guys!
I wish land rover still built the Discovery as rugged off road vehicle vs the crossover of today. I think if they continued to build in this rugged body on frame Discovery series, it would be successful, especially if they improved the drivetrain.
I’ve just bought one four months ago and I love it. I had to replace the turbo ( being in uk I have the TD5Diesel) and I have a few minor oil leaks to sort out. It’s a bit underpowered so I am about to fit a Vortex exhaust and then later I will have a stage one remap for economy and towing, so low down torque. Then it will be phenomenal. I drive eighty miles to work and back on motorways and it purrs along at 75mph and then I can go and do some mild off roading. The only other vehicle I know that is comfortable doing both those jobs is of course a Landcruiser, but who can afford one of those now? They’re silly money. These Disco 2s are the best that Landrover produced and in Diesel form have better economy than the Disco 3. I get 30 miles the UK gallon as standard, with the vortex and remap, if I stick to my current driving style I should se 35. I don’t know what that is US gallons but obviously less, I guess it would mid to high 20s. Yeah anyways, my most favourite vehicle I’ve ever owned.
Loved my LR4, let it go to be used in a movie and got myself a new Discovery and boy do I love taking these things offroad and overlanding. Comfortable and stylish.
I think you're going to regret swapping a D2 for a D3 in the off road department. Also they're not the easiest things to work on needing the body off for some engine routine work.
Mines used as a daily driver and some greenlaning. I like knowing what ever happens my misses and kids can drive over most things and get home haha, and no issues with it, and normally my 3 amegos means I have dirt somewhere it shouldn't be, usually clears it's self if not jet wash when I get back home. Also not had them 3 well off roading so tc always worked :)
Ive had 3 discos and the people who always claim they are unreliable have never actually had one. Yeah they leak oil so just keep on top of it and youll be fine. Other than that mine has been used and abused and has never left me stranded
Make way for the lord , I’m the same, I’ve had Landrovers for 21 years and no big issues if you keep them maintained. Maintenance is dearer because the parts are bigger and more heavy duty than a regular car though, so if you can’t afford to maintain it, eventually you’re going to be left with a big bill. I’ve the same Disco 3 for 12 years and the dearest things I’ve done are replacing the suspension control arms/ wishbones (fronts twice and rear once) and the timing belts because for the tdv6 it’s recommend to replace part of the front engine casing where the oil pump is (an extra €500 on to the timing belt price) Same as yourself, I’ve never been left stranded 👍🏻
The reason why Discovery 2s get the 3 Amigos is because many are not driven enough off-road. Traction control needs to kick pretty often to keep working properly, or the shuttle valve sticks. A Discovery don't like to sit around idle. It does better when driven and even better when driven where all the components are put to use. Every problem I've had with mine has been caused by life issues meaning I'm not going off road and the car sits idle.
Wow, so sad seeing it go away from you but at the same time it is good as a new disco is coming over. If i lived in the usa i would definitely buy that truck, I can't find one for less than 10k here in my country. They are rare
They can't do that. They wouldn't want to hear you complaining if it broke down. Good idea though they could have raffled it for a paypal dollar a ticket and got 20k for it.
I have one, an 03. The engine runs hot and the head gaskets get worn out every 85k. Esp if you put off road lights o. Front of the ARB front bumper. Otherwise they are amazing.
2004 has so much more personality than the D3. I’m sure it’s a nice car but the new one has that generic look that all cars nowadays have. At a quick glance, you can’t tell if it’s a Nissan, Kia, could be a Ford... The 2004 was the end of a era where cars looked unique to the maker.
ya he is right my land rover looks nothing like his. because i off road it way toooooo HARD. its to much fun to drive this tank like a rally car. rock crawling is amazing with the center diff.
I've had 3 rovers so far. I bought my first disco2, sold it to get a LR3... I missed my Disco so much I ended up buying another Disco. Having a Disco and a LR3 it was time to make a desición... I ended up selling my LR3 and kept my Disco 2. Best decision I ever made... I love it and would change it for anything. The design is timeless, and you don't see that many of them around. Got the 3' lift, extended fenders flares with the 32s and it just looks mean!
I just kept mine in the family... I gave it to my daughter, but I still have the title :) We upgraded to a 2008 Range Rover HSE which actually has LESS storage space than my discovery in back. But it's far more reliable for long distance travels even though we just did a new head gasket and lifters at 200,000 miles for around $850
Trading the Disco 2 for the LR3 is like going on a black op on the Saigon River and taking Britney Spears rather than Rambo. A 4x4 that has a limp mode if it breaks a nail is not a recovery vehicle. It needs a recovery vehicle. The Disco 2 is more akin to the original Defender
I have a 2003 Land Rover discovery and it's great!!!! In fact I bought 2 one is the SE the other is SE 7 !!!!! They both drive great on the highway!!!! The crazy part is the 1 cost me $500 With 113k miles!!!!! I got it so cheap due to Rockers on the 1 side!!!! The SE7 I paid $3000 with 135k miles
I had a 2002 Accord that ate through three transmissions in five years. I bought it thinking that I was buying the most reliable car in the road. Since then I buy what I like and drive whatever I buy softly.
@@LlyleHunter yes they had issues from 1998-2002; 2003-2005 v6s; I have 2003 accord 4cyl with 220K & 2004 accord 4cyl with 270K; runs like brand new. same tranny + original waterpump; coolanr; brake fluid; power steerings fluid.
I’d much rather buy an LR4 (2010-2013) than an LR3. The LR3 just had too many problems. The LR4 fixed a lot of the reliability bugs and the engines were much more powerful (5.0L V8 is a beast).
First of all, I never once got tired of the Disco rescue rig series. 😤 My ‘01 has 300000 miles and runs like a Swiss watch! Ya probably should have kept it. imho
I disagree about body on frame and solid axles being best. Modern Monocoque is much more rigid (2020 Defender for example) and independent all round suspension although not as good with articulation, the wheels stay more perpendicular to the ground (rather than to the axle) and the ride is much better.
How have you been calculating mileage though? I don't expect this one to get good mileage but 11 sounds almost too bad to be true. With oversized tires the car travels a longer distance with each rotation than the car thinks so even if you divide your on board computer miles with tanked gallons you won't get the right number. Or have you re-calibrated the odo and speedo? Also, in another 1,5 years can we expect to see the big daddy Discovery 4? ;)
The only reason to own a Land Rover is for its amazing off-road capabilities. You definitely don't want it as a daily driver, or a mall crawler or a grocery getter -- too many people use them for that, in my opinion. Take it off road and enjoy it! Buy a damn Toyota Corolla for your commuter/grocery-getter.
I used to own a 04 discovery. I wouldn’t do it. Very capable off road but there is a reason a $50,000 vehicle is selling for $5k. You will easily spend another $5k in the first couple years of ownership.
I considered it for towing my horses in Spain but the A4 Allroad I finally bought has way more torque, 500 Nm versus like 420 in the Land Rover. I think Audi has just better science behind it.
If i'm ever rich as hell i'll for sure get 2. maybe three. Parts car, n 2 in rotation so when one breaks ill still have one. They are among the best SUV Ever made. I mean The disco 2 is unreliable, but it's like a Ferrari, it looks great, it gives you this feeling despite not having reliability. I remember these when i was a young kid in school. MAN, if you owned one you were hot shit. I really think the disco 2 is the best looking SUV ever. the feeling you get from driving it is amazing. i used to work at a car wash and loved these things. I can't afford one now, but if i ever get financially able i would love to own these. It's really a shame what they've become, but and least the Defender is attempting to be a new Disco 2.
