Loving this behind-the-scenes, brass knuckles look at Wyrmwood’s business movements. Watching these sharp guys lay out their positions and come to consensus is awesome, even if there’s more discussion behind the camera. Honestly feel like I’m learning better management skills just being a fly on the wall. Don’t know how you manage to make these kinds of videos as interesting and entertaining as the build or con videos, but another one knocks it out of park. Keep rock’n, Wrymlife crew!

I expected the guys to go back home after they had established a working relationship with Jason and his equal in Pennsylvania to ensure they all had the same idea about the quality and look of the finished product. Just remember there are a lot of people with mobility issues and/or small children who would prefer a coffee table have round or softer corners so they aren't having to take people to the hospital/make ice packs after they've rammed various body parts on the sharp corners by accident (yeah, I know - a lot of words smashed into one sentence). Some parenting things you never forget. FWIW, I was constantly trying to keep myself between toddlers and the corners of other people's furniture when my son was that small (about 3 decades ago). There's also an argument that if the table does well on Kickstarter Keystone then knows Wyrmwood needs them to produce the table to fulfill the Kickstarter so could then jack up their price artificially. It's not a flawless plan but it does suggest Doug understand the importance of knowing the volume of sales and not guessing when planning to roll out a new product
@bryanwoods3373
@bryanwoods3373 4 года назад
@@thewelshwarrior4634 Yeah, it depends on how savvy and honest Keystone is. Based on the videos, they probably know Doug intends to put up more money than they are officially worth and how much future business this could mean. They could look at it the same way some actor contracts are where they accept a smaller fee to get a percentage of ticket sales that could exceed their normal fee. Keystone could negotiate slightly higher than what is being offered now knowing that they can get that return on investment and growth within a year. And then Wyrmwood might be able to get rid of that huge stockpile of legs by focusing on them for designs or even allowing an at-cost option to change the legs on an existing product.
@dwild92
@dwild92 4 года назад
There's nothing new anout valuing a business as a whole. Never heard of acquihire? Buying a company for the whole purpose of getting the staff. There's also acquision simply to get the users, really think that Whatsapp was worth 16 billions? The userbase was. It's always about its value. What Doug does has nothing to do with negociation technique, not only is he way too transparent to be a negociation technique, but he also seems to be ready to offer more than what their book say they are worth. That's not negociation technique, that's being practical and honest.

If anything, the conversation in this video should reassure Keystone employees. Wyrmwood wants your talent and labor. They do not just need your facilities, they need YOU. It is not a one-sided hostile takeover, it is a mutual benefit to both companies. Keystone is just becoming a Cornerstone for Wyrmwood, one that will be used for future growth and expansion. Without this building block, Wyrmwood's growth is constricted, and without Wyrmwood, Keysone will not see new life. Does a Cornerstone loose its independence when used in construction? Yes, but it retains its unique features and is used to form something new and beautiful, and without it, the new structure could collapse. This is not the end of Keystone or Wyrmwood, it is the beginning of something new. I look forward to what develops here.

@kensei10
@kensei10 4 года назад
BurntToast256 his argument doesn’t hold water, if you spend the 3 million from the Kickstarter to buy keystone that money is gone. Now you have to make up costs to produces and ship all the Kickstarter items through other sales. Assume a massive mark up in cost (I assume production costs maybe 30% of MSRP/Kickstarter price) and they need 1 million in profit from regular sales to cover fulfillment costs. This is a risky move for wyrmwood. The owners of keystone can take the money and walk away.

@dananderson5516
@dananderson5516 4 года назад
The way I would run this (because I know you all want to know ;) ), there should be no price negotiations or discussions with Keystone directly until after the Kickstarter. Run the Kickstarter with them under a production contract and see how it goes - not just the production, but the whole process from start to finish, including customer feedback on accuracy, quality, etc...if they prove themselves, great, they have that added value and you can pay that premium. But if it is a debacle or there are issues, you don't want to pay a premium for a kitchen where you have to retrain all the chefs, to use your metaphor Doug. It can be harder to retrain people when it comes to specific processes and QA/QC related issues than to train new ones - which frankly nullifies the whole reason you are considering purchasing them, especially at a premium for the personnel.

A lot of the concern would be that since Keystone will be going INTO Wyrmwood, that the values and the way that they handle business will imherintently be more Wyrmwood's culture than their own. It's always a concern for company's. My boyfriend's company where he works was recently "acquired" and the change in how management dealt with sales to production happened VERY quickly. They'll be making their furniture and there's that fear that how Wyrmwood makes things will be drastically different than what they're used to. Of course since it's Wyrmwood, they'll be fine. It's just that the employees don't quite know that yet :)

Culture can include things like benefits, HR systems, funding for holiday parties, etc. as well and those things tend to be merged into the larger or acquiring company's way of doing things. Having been with a small company that got acquired by a medium company that got acquired by a large company within a span of a year, my local day-to-day culture didn't change but a number of the perks I was used to went away.

I'm excited for the coffee table!! As someone with a fairly new dining table that already fits my gaming needs pretty well, I wasn't sure this Kickstarter would appeal to me. But a nice Wyrmwood coffee table is definitely worth a look at least!

James, I'm praying things work out for Keystone. Hopefully, your employees will stay employed and the culture remains the same. Being forced to lay off people sucks, my friend has had to do it before and it visibly takes a toll on him every time. May God guide you during this time of instability.

Great video as always. The culture difference is definitely a concern. Hope it works out well. Though to be honest, Keystone should be excited about the cultural difference if they know what's good for their business. Wyrmwood is much more in touch with what younger people are looking for in a company to support, and it would be excellent for their future. In a way, I think Wyrmwood is taking a much bigger risk here. I hope Doug doesn't overpay -- you really should be paying market value (or only slightly above), regardless of its value to you personally.

I dont get the worry about culture clash. As long as keystone is treated like a subsidiary company keeping full control over personal decisions which I think is the idea they should be fine. The only real change of any sort doug seems to want to implement is sales model changes. Once the purchase is completed I dont even expect to see a wyrmlife episode based in keystone except maybe once every 6 months or once a quarter at the most.

Would be nice to see a special deal if somebody wants to get a matching set. I would love to get both the 2x3 coffee table for the smaller gaming sessions/puzzles and the larger dining table for 6 or more gaming sessions. That would make a beautiful set of tables.

Hey Wyrmwood! Love these videos! I actually like the name Lilliput for one of the small tables, but here are some other offerings for names. I stayed with the Divination theme for naming. cleromancy - divination by casting Astragalomancy / Astragal - divination by dice hakata - divination by bones or dice lithomancy - divination by gems or stones Jiaobei - Asian fortune-telling by throwing special stones Sortilege - divination by the casting of lots xylomancy - divination by the shape or texture of wood. Keep up the great work! Loving the Keystone crew, but I want to see an update on what the home crew is up to!

So I know you guys have removable legs for the prophesy as an option instead of integrated ones. Would it be possible to have that on the new low cost table? And here's the kicker: And have as an option to buy the small legs as an extra? Maybe not in the kickstarter but when it goes into the regular inventory.

I actually play a lot of games that call for a 4'X4' surface, but I don't have a whole lot of room. I've come up with systems that breakdown for storage, in the past. What if there was an insert-type of thing for the smaller tables? Something that could support a 4'X4' or 4X6' playing surface? Potentially, I could also use it to stage maps for my tactical RPG's. Then, the insert could be stored in a broom closet, that space next to the fridge, or under the bed. I actually have a design in my head for something that could fit any table, but a piece that is fitted would be nice.

What a great episode! That edit at 7:50 was hilarious. I am SO incredibly excited about the projected start date of this upcoming table Kickstarter. @Wyrmwood, are there any plans on doing a roll the dice tier this time around? I love the idea of paying a little more for a chance at getting a more exotic wood, but at the same time, I don't know if I could handle having a Lacewood gaming table 😅. Crossing my fingers for something cool.

These behind-the-scenes office meetings are GOLD! (Btw love the Google calendar segue, JV. 😂 So funny.) I wish my meetings went that well. The satisfaction when everybody just went "Ooohhhhhhhhhh, aaAAaafter the kickstarter!" was priceless. I totally felt like part of Wyrmwood watching that. Love John, Jason, Ian, and Ed's comments by the way. I dunno, it feels like it shows them really thinking and not blindly going with the flow; Doug had a solid reasoning too. A company with a bit of opposition here and there is healthy to keep things grounded. Also, Lilliput sounds great. It it implies small to those who know and kind of gives a "short/small" vibe just from the phonetic sound itself.

I've been looking at gaming tables for a while but I've had a difficult time justifying it so I'm really happy that you guys are looking at making a low-cost table. One of the main reasons I want a table is to increase the opportunity to play games while still having a space to live in. I've been looking into all the different game tables and came across a video from BoardGameCo where he reviews his uniquely geek coffee table. In addition to the vaulted section, there are also separate game leaves that can be set up where the wood top leaves fit and these can be stored in the lower section of the table. I really liked the idea of being able to have a multiplayer game set up in the vaulted area as well as storage that can keep a solo game safe and ready to play. This model really seems to enhance the accessibility of gaming, which is a big bonus and adds a ton of value to the investment. Having seen your work I know you put out a quality product I was just wondering if you have thought of doing anything like this with your tables or if you already have something like this that I may have not seen. Definitely looking forward to your Kickstarter!

As someone who lives in a downstairs apartment I can't afford to have a large table take up most of living space. I currently have a 3x4 foot table that stands at 30 inches tall. It is challenging to DM a game on it with a minimum of 3 players. So a second table of those measurements that I could put side by side with it or at the end of it to increase our "gaming" space, would really help out. Especially if it's $750 or less. Because unlike a lot people I don't have expensive equipment (ex: computer, home entertainment system, phone, etc.) and have a tough time saving for large purchases. I'm looking forward to seeing how this project develops.

It's weirdly reassuring to hear the keystone crew's concerns as well. I think James put it best, it's a fear of change. We all love Wyrmwood, and if the merger/acquisition does happen, hopefully it goes smoothly and everyone's fears are put to rest.The fact that James takes the time to listen to his employees and give them the space to discuss their concerns is A+ management and I love it. Can't really agree with Kelli that it's for "no good reason at all" (not that Keystone has done anything bad), but past experience has taught a lot of people (or at least me) that it's better to be cautious and then find there's nothing to worry about, then to assume there's nothing to worry about and then be proven wrong. That said, it's most likely that things will go well, since Doug, James and the other people involved will do their best to make sure that both sides end up happy with whatever deal they work out.
