If the AFL keep renewing the GWS Canberra contract, it would just prove that they have peas for brains. GWS lacks support in Western Sydney because they're simply not playing enough games there. Nobody in Western Sydney wants to follow a part-time Canberra team. They need to reallocate all their Canberra games to that ground in Blacktown and give people in Canberra their own full-time team.
Ironically, nobody in Canberra wants to follow a part-time Sydney team. By trying to cover two markets, their stunting their growth in either. Would prefer GWS pivot to Sydney full-time and Canberra get Team 20. We don't want their sloppy seconds.
@@canberrapear7219 Exactly, people in Canberra deserve their own side, it's been long enough. With a population of around half a million people, it's really the best decision for team 20
Only need two games during t he Easter show in Sydney and that can be the away derby and another fixture, possibly Blacktown, possibly a double header at the SCG. But we need to be full time in Western Sydney, the Canberra deal hurts our growth in WS.
The canberra team should be called “Riverina”. Based in Canberra, but play occasional games in Albury and Wagga. And will have a population of 1 million people, which is twice as large as Tasmania.
I see your point but from a marketing point of view it should be called Canberra. It’s the Capital. If Canberra want it then forget about”old school charm”. Either redevelop Manuka with a roof to host AFL, NRL, Cricket and soccer or build a new 40-50K stadium on Lake Burley Griffen. I agree that for Canberra to work as an AFL city it does need to embrace the Riverina. Maybe as an exclusive zone. I’d maybe even extend it to Shepparton.
A NZ BBL team does make sense but I think a bigger market could be made by placing the 10th team on the Gold Coast instead. There’s a ground already in place and it’s in a location that could heavily attract players and fans. Beyond the BBL I think any development of Manuka would have to involve the A-League, as they would want to have access to a ground where they can play too
A Canberra AFL team won’t happen with a mini makeover of Manuka at $85M. Tasmania are spending ten times that to get their team. 20,000 capacity won’t cut it. It has to be at least 30,000. Heck, Kardinia Park will be 40,000. Same in Hobart. Plus, if you want to attract international events, the football World Cup demands a minimum 45,000, it has to be bigger. I agree that the 20th team should be in Canberra but not in a Mickey Mouse stadium. It’s the nations capital!
Hobart's will only be 23k. 20k is definitely on the small side, but good enough to start with. Then there's enough room on the western side to gradually increase like Geelong once we prove the demand is there.
@@canberrapear7219 Hobart won’t be able to expand with the retractable roof. Canberra want to retain “the charm” of the current facility. Short sighted all round.
@@titoelcomombiano If that’s true, and I doubt it is, why did FIFA entertain Australia’s World Cup bid based on the MCG & ANZ Stadium? Bruce Stadium will never get redeveloped to 45K. It would be a white elephant.
Change the name of GWS to WSC. West Sydney Canberra. Have the Giants playing a handful of home and away matches there. Involve another club like North as well. So both clubs play there.
Great video mate, I think an upgrade would be great. Raiders and Brumbies could play at Manuka while Canberra stadium get upgraded. Hopefully kangaroos get moved to Canberra and the Canberra Comets will be a reality in the future. Would be great for the economy before and after the game if we had more events at Manuka.
raiders and brumbies can get farked and stay at bruce. and hopefully canberra doesn't get a washed up merger side like the roos but gets its own team...
Please stop calling this a riverine team! Canberrans were very proud of their territory and did not need to be connected to Albury or Wagga. The capital region best depicts the area catchment
I’ve always said that The GWS Giants should relocate to Canberra and be rebranded to The ACT Giants, the reason for this is due to the fact that The Giants already play games there.
I like the idea of the upgrades, but that won't be the what is needed to get AFL team. But it we got our stuff together bring in a VFL for 2029 we a road map to AFL 2032 when the next gws cbr deal ends. Hopefully by then they can upgrade more. Bradman stand overhaul with facilities extending into the rsl facilities. Or build a new stadium in phillip oval near woden, where the light rail will end in 10 years I would also rotate the goals 15 degree and build big grand stand behind which wouldn't effect the cricket set up The most disappointing part of the white elephant they build for cricket coverage is it limits grand stand intergration. It is that end of the ground that should be upgraded. While the cameras would like to see a grand stand the sun on that side makes it a very average for spectators, situation for any north south ground who need to play more day games. Give canberra north license or st kilda. We would either embrace the kangaroo nickname or the ainslie tri colours are the same as st kilda and would encompass both history I would also make the point that there doesn't need to be an even number for the bbl. The teams play with 3 to 4 days break, and is already weird gaps in the schedule for teams. The bye issue is a thing for the bbl. There is money in a Canberra sporting team and we deserve better than we are given. Feds put our retangular stadium on top of a ridge line exposed tobthe element and the local liberals screwed the budget in a reno that was 5 times more than proposed. We have been affraid to invest on that scale again. Only now with olympic in the air that they will look at the AIS (hopefully they the acoustic at AIS arena) then maybe we have a home for the caps and bring the cannons back. We get screwed around by football australia, still not a a-league team
@barrydobson2283 To let you know that (FFA Football Federation Australia) has granted Canberra their licence for their very new A-League Men's Football (Soccer) for them to enter into our A-League Competition & also Auckland is going to be the (2nd Second) New Zealand Team to enter our A-League Football (Soccer) Competition for both Men'& Women and so far, right now that we got a Canberra Team already for our Women's A-League Football (Soccer) for some years of course. So we do have Canberra Raiders in our (NRL National Rugby League) & ACT Australian Capital Territory Brumbies in our Super Rugby in Rugby Union Football Competitions & very next hopefully that Canberra will have both new teams in both A-League Football (Soccer) from &/or by FFA Football Federation Australia) & the (AFL Australian Football League) Competitions also to be based in Canberra as well too of course.
AFL needs to commit fully to western Sydney and let someone else play out of Canberra. There is a very big population in the west of Sydney and a lot of AFL fans not attending Giants matches. Let's face it, NRL is a lousy spectatcle and soccer a poor reproduction of the Euro product. Like a backyard version of Cirque do Soleil.
The closest thing to Canberra getting a bbl team is spotless (Sydney Showgrounds) stadium saying “nah mate, don’t want any matches here” which would probably result in the thunder moving to Manuka. (Hypothetically speaking, the bbl could change the name to the Canberra thunder, but then the stars would need to be changed to the “Darwin stars” or something like that, to equal out Sydney having one team)
@Joshdyisdifh I DON'T that any of the North Melbourne Kangaroos Followers &/or Supporters and especially for those who are living in Melbourne who would (NOT) like the idea of having their very beloved NM Kangaroos Team to be relocated to Canberra at all & hopefully this &/or that will Never Ever be going to happen in the Future at all of course.
nimbys shouldn't be too much problem....I don't think there's too much housing too close to Manuka (there's houses across Canberra Ave, but not sure they're too affected)
Oh there is nimbys, it one of the original areas in canberra with old rich retired public servants, it also one of the more expensive parts to live. They complained bitterly with lights going in
Canberra won’t be able to sustain a team because nearly every AFL fan in this city already follows another AFL team. I’m a Canberran and I wouldn’t support them.
@@EvilKicksMoney The BBL gets good crowds, and SAF have a new T20 league. The Sheffield Shield's equivalent in NZ is the Plunket Shield. So not sure what point you're making?
This is perhaps a good sign for Canberra to be the 20th AFL/VFL team. I would say this is more than welcome considering the timeframe to completion would be nice for their team to enter the competition with GWS to look for other opportunities to get fans in central NSW.
Great video. Even if it costs $85m, that's a bargain for what could bring Canberra clubs in two national competitions. Especially when you look at what Hobart, Darwin or the Canberra rectangular stadium is expected to cost.
Yes, very indeed so that I hope that Canberra would establish their very own (AFL Australian Football Team) to be based in Canberra eventually would have their new name called the Canberra Capitals for only (1 One) reason simply because it's our National Capital City of our Country of Australia of course. Also that Canberra has already been granted a licence to enter their new Canberra Team into our Men's A-League Football (Soccer) Competition from &/or by the (FFA Football Federation Australia) by &/or at the end of this year & so far right now that Canberra already do have a Women's A-League Football (Soccer) Competition for a number of years & also joining in both of our Men's & Women's A-League Football (Soccer) Competitions also at the end of this year is another (2nd Second) New Zealand Team which is Auckland along with their Kiwi rivals of the Wellington Phoenix of course.
Yeah, give Canberra their own team. GWS really needs to eventually make Blacktown their home and for god's sake get rid of "Giants" as a name, it is so American...I call them the Goannas, what a great Australian mascot that would be. GO THE GOANNAS!!!
Don't worry about Canberra. You don't want any more BBL teams and any AFL team would be propped up. Let the Giants service Canberra and the two Sydney teams.
The AFL prop up all the team in the comp with the broadcast money, last I heard only 6 clubs run at a profit off there own venue streams. Broadcast money gets better when they get more supports watching the game, 500k in the Canberra region has that potential
@@barrydobson2283 You have some clubs that are really profitable. Others are ok. Then we have a growing number of clubs that are propped up by AFL and other clubs. Now its increasing with Suns GWS Tassie Port Lions Swans Saints Bulldogs Melbourne Hawks North etc... You can't keep adding new teams. You look at the Eagles with big memberships and expensive tickets for fans. Eagles fans are paying extra just so new clubs keep getting added that can't pay their way. Its not sustainable in the end. You'll get the wealthier clubs who have $100 million in the bank turning it around and putting the AFL under pressure. Its pointless getting wealthier on the backs of fans and members and corporate support, and you can't use it to get better. That model won't work long term.
@@barrydobson2283 It’s more than that but as clubs divorce themselves from pokies it gets harder. No Sydney NRL clubs turn a profit. They’re all basically bankrupt without Cannel 9 and Foxtel. Too many teams and they still want to expand the leagues. 🤔
Canberra is nowadays a satellite town of Sydney. As voting in elections and refenda clearly show it is very untypical of Australia. Don't give them anything.
@@rajivmurkejee7498 Give them 1 stadium. What if you put a Marvel, or something like it, on Lake Burley Griffin or somewhere close to downtown and sold off the other two or made them training/suburban grounds it could work. Invest in the future but don’t redevelop elephants like Manuka or Bruce. A Marvel like stadium could service all codes and, given the size of Canberra, that’s all that they need or can sustain. Doesn’t have to be 50K capacity (but I’d go for 45K to future proof it) but that could help attract test matches, BBL, etc. Movable seating, multi-purpose.
