Eddie: In 2013 I was diagnosed with stage four lung cancer and given 18 months to live. I had chemotherapy and radiotherapy every day for 3 months. I went into remission for 7 years. It then came back in 2020. Once again 18 months to live. This time I had chemotherapy and immunotherapy monthly for 3 years. I am now in remission. Eventually it will come back again and who knows? With chemo and a positive mental attitude I have enjoyed 11 years and counting. I have seen my children grow up and seen my grandchildren born. Every day is a blessing! Cancer is the other c word. Stay positive and don’t spend every waking minute thinking about dieing of cancer. Enjoy the little things. No matter how long you get it’s then worth fighting for!

Regarding physio - for a person in your condition who has been lying down for 10 weeks and had nerve connection cut off for most of it, what is needed is just movement. A physio won't work magic. Just move your right arm and leg as much as you can. Lift your leg, raise your knee toward your chest etc. Its very hard to begin with, but little by little it will improve. Ask the nurses if they can help you get out of bed to sit in a chair where you work on your arm and leg movement there. In short, don't expect a physio will do it all for you in weeks to come. Start doing as much as you can yourself. You haven't enough time left to be patient and work according to the NHS' timetable. Don't be afraid to pipe up. In fact, the more demanding you are, the keener they'll be to move you on.

Had a relative with brain cancer. Surgery went “PERFECT”. He did chemotherapy and after that was included in a drug study. He had quality of life for about 2 years before cancer came back and he passed 5 months after that. “I’m sure every case is unique but wanted to share his experience. Also, he tolerated both treatments very well. I understand the drugs are less harsh than in the past and they include drugs in the treatment to help with after effects. Wishing you all the best Ed and will continue to include you in my prayers.

Also, if after the first treatment Eddie doesn't want to continue he could make that call then. My Sister-in-law had 2 chemotherapy treatments after her breast cancer returned. To my big surprise she was able to continue working part-time during the treatments and now returned full-time. It's a different cancer, but as I understand it the severity of the chemotherapy side effects can be different for everyone. If I was in Eddie's shoes I would probably give it a go if I could also undertake physio therapy during treatment.

I did chemo and a stem cell transplant in BKK in 2022. It will not cure my disease. When the pills I’m taking stop working to “maintain” things, which they will, I’ll be faced with going through chemo again. I’ve already told my Oncologist I will not be doing that and will just live out whatever is left. I’m 65 and have lived the lives of at least three men (travel, women, booze, adventures, etc.) It’s a very personal choice. Everyone is different. For me, I don’t want to just stay alive longer and have a rotten quality of life because as you know, chemo is not for the timid. The final criteria I used for myself was, “Is chemo going to cure me?” And the answer is, “no”. In your case, it sounds like it might improve the quality of your life by helping you move, or at least that’s what I understand from watching your video. I wish you all the best. You’ll make the right decision for you.

I've gone through chemo & radiation treatment. It's bad, but death is worse. Have a good attitude about life. That really helped me get through my treatments. My goal was get through this awful experience & then get on with the rest of my life. I had it in my records that as soon as I finished my treatments, I was returning to Cambodia. All my doctors would read that in my records & smile. They always wanted to know about my travel plans. Despite my cancer, I could see these doctors were sorta jealous of my future plans. For what it’s worth listen to those that have had it. For the record, me mum in 2001 was just about 62 she got cancer stomach and bowel - she said screw it mo radiation or chemo . They said she’d get a year or two she got just over 2 April 2003. Now, they also said the cancer toxins would eventually hit the brain and she wouldn’t feel anything at the end - they were right. She really had best part of two years before she declined. Kept her hair, dignity, and saved the inconvenience, depression of seeing others like her and she was at peace with her decision - not there’s not mine, no one else’s but hers and now yours. Quality of life is everything Eddie lad . I know I won’t do it either for whatever that’s worth. Just focus on your leg Eddy and get outta there man. Borrowed time is just that go live! If you were having chemo to try to reduce a tumor, it would be debatable, but to have chemo to try to kill off any potential cancer cells to come back, then that seems worthwile for a limited course of therapy. Preventing a reoccurance is much different to trying to reduce a tumor.

Eddy it's great to hear you speaking so coherently and fluently. My wife died 33 years ago. Each cancer is different, and each person reacts differently to chemo. My wife had chemo, radiation and immunotherapy, plus 2 operations . From start to finish she only lasted one and a half years. I also know of quite a few people who had chemo and went on to live healthy lives for many more years. So I say this: What have you got to lose? Give it a shot. Then you can see for yourself. Pain tolerance? Only you will know the answer. Nobody can feel your pain, and then again you may just not feel too good with a minimum of discomfort. Go for it. BTW did you see my previous suggestion about making a Last Will & Testiment, and an Everlasting Power of Attorney? The Will is obvious so that the government and the banks do not grab your money etc. The Everlasting P.O.A. is so that someone else can handle your affairs, money, practical arrangements etc if you are alive but not compos mentis or may be incapable of doing them yourself. Well worthwile to have someone acting on your behalf. Yes, I do remember one of your videos when you said that you don't trust anyone. But now it's a different ballgame. You need trustworthy people by your side apart from the medical professionals. Surely there are people in the UK like Nick was there for you in Pattaya? You have the coming weeks to fix up your POA. Don't neglect it. And stay the course pal.

Eddie, I am a relative newcomer to your videos, which I have enjoyed. Thank you, and I look forward to many more! Alternative therapies may help with various aspects of your physical and mental symptoms, but they will not cure the cancer or extend your life. Please don't fall for these well-meaning but purely individual and anecdotal stories. Also, don't underestimate the profoundly debilitating effects of chemo. Not saying you should or should not do it, but it is not just a tummy ache and a few hairs falling out of your head. I watched chemo destroy my uncle, who was battling two cancer diagnoses. He had been a very vital man in his mid-60s, and i always wonder if he would have lasted longer without the chemo. Still, honestly it seems your best bet. If you feel there is no alternative, go for it. We are rooting for you!

Hi Eddy. I first saw your channel years ago off and on. My dream was then and still is to retire somewhere in Southeast Asia. I rarely comment on videos or subscribe unless I feel it deserves it. The last video I watched from you is when you we're walking down a forrested road and talking about moving to Thailand to retire for good. I was shocked to see your videos today on everything that has happened to you in the last 2 months. I hope nothing but the best for you on whatever choice you choose. Speaking for myself I was diagnosed with an aggressive big C in 2018. After surgery I was told I should do chemo right away. I was very stubborn and said no, understanding what chemo does to your healthy cells. The last thing my doctor recommend I do was to get out of my bed and be mobile. I had no friends or family at my side so I was left to make my own decision alone. I stumbled out of my bed and walked circles around my room for the remainder of my hospital stay. I have not seen a doctor since then, so I guess a dodged a bullet. Thank you for all your travel advice and keep waving your hands in the air for a speedy recovery Eddy. 🙌🙂

Eddie, I'm so sorry to hear about your condition. You asked about chemo or no chemo. Obviously, it is, and has to be, your decision. However, I'd like to share the experience of my partner who died of cancer last year. She originally resisted chemotherapy but, like many people, eventually agreed to undergo treatment. It was absolutely horrific. After each session, she came close to death, was in extreme pain and discomfort, led a miserable existence, and eventually stopped the treatment before the scheduled sessions were complete. She decided she could no longer endure the treatment and wanted to make the best of her remaining time in this world. Not easy but a brave decision. But, it does work for some people - Good luck to you.

Mate of mine in Liverpool had a brain tumour had the operation 4 years ago prior to this a number of years ago he had breast cancer had chemo etc and recovered . Was on lots of daily tablets for years, and then the first brain tumour came 4 years ago. He had the chemo etc. Quality of life was good afterwards slowly got better. He managed to start cycling again and did a ride for Clatterbridge Hospital raising lots of money for cancer research. Unfortunately, he had a fall off his bike due to a blackout and was found by a nurse passing in a car. He was diagnosed with epilepsy after his hospital admission and having routine scans, etc. found the he had another tumour in another part of his brain , he then had a second operation and chemo. Now he is ok ish but he has put lots of weight on, and when he ventures out, he uses a mobility scooter or gets a lift off family. The side effect now is his balance is sometimes affected by everything. To answer your question, Ed, I think without the chemo, he wouldn't still be alive today. However, it's a massive decision only you can make.

Doctors consider many factors: The type and subtype of cancer, the stage of the cancer (how far it has spread), the age and health of the patient, and so on. I believe the doctor was honest and frank with Eddie. But ultimately, it is Eddie's decision.

You and you alone have to make that decision. All of us at some point in time will also have to make that decision when Cancer comes a calling. Chemo can kill you also. If you don't do chemo, what could have been? I had cancer when I was 12 years old and went through different treatments to see which was the best in 1969. I'm still here. The main thing is that you are a lot older, lived a good life and that's what you should be thankful for no matter which way you decide. My wife at 51 had breast cancer and went through Chemo, 2 different types for one YEAR and it was SO hard on her but she made it and now living past the 5 year mark. Thank you for being brave enough to do a video.

Well done for being positive Eddy. Before you think about further treatment you have to aim to get out of that bed, up and walking. When you can walk out of that hospital get yourself signed up to a Gym to get your body and mind fit to make further decisions about treatment (if any). Your already looking younger than when you left the UK, so the hospital regime /food is working to improve your physical situation. I am almost 80, walk an hour every day, along with an hours Qi Gong exercises. For the past few years I have spent winters in Udon Thani staying at a friend's house, so I hope you can also get back there some time soon to recommence your Asia travels. Good luck to you.

Hi Ed. Since your op, your physical and cognitive functioning has improved significantly. The chemotherapy would certainly halt that. It’s horrible (but not painful) and like swallowing poison which is utterly nauseating. Start the physio and see how it goes, see how your body reacts and if you start getting weaker or any signs of cognitive impairment again - then start chemo. They can’t refuse just because you chose to delay commencement. You have come to terms with the initial devastating news and prognosis, which, they said that even with chemotherapy you will have one year to live or perhaps a little more. A very high percentage of chemo patients get long enough to get their affairs in order and not much more. Mobility aside, you are a big strong man and I think you can maintain a super positive attitude going forward. With the physio - get up and get moving again and believe you are going back to Pattaya to enjoy every day you can. Be blessed and comforted by the tremendous amount of support and good wishes you have for your survival and comfort 👍💪🙏

You can only do what is in your heart of hearts. The diagnosis you have been given is one of a life limiting illness. The median survival time is 12-14 months. Some live a bit less, some a bit more. Every GBM patient is different and responds differently to the TMZ chemo depending on certain genetics of the tumor. Once the tumor has been debulked (surgery), your next port of call is the Neuro Oncologist team, not the surgeons. They will discuss the options with you and walk you through the process of the chemo and radio (the standard is to get both but again leave that to the neuro oncologists to discuss with you). Your arm has significantly improved and with physio you should get back a lot of function so keep at it. Chemo and radio will not cure it, but it will give you some time to get your affairs in order and enjoy life. Even though everyone reacts differently to chemo, the chemo they give for GBM is actually well tolerated. This would be another thing you can discuss with the neuro oncologists and they will give you medication so if you feel sick or other symptoms they can treat it. They are experts in that field of medicine and you will not be alone or left to suffer while doing chemo. They might also have a trial they can put you in if you’re suitable. After surgery this is the team you should really be under in terms of care and the standard is to discharge you and see them as an outpatient unless you need ongoing physio in which case they will send you to a rehab hospital for more intense physio and functional recovery. No one can tell you to go ahead with treatment or not, that is your decision, but at least discuss it with the Neuro oncology and get all the information before making the decision. I wish you all the best and feel free to ask questions if you want. The protocol most teams use for this is called the Stupp protocol and I’m sure there are videos on RU-vid and brochures online to read more about it. Many people have decades of life and waste it away being miserable overworking themselves and then dying suddenly of a heart attack. You have been given a rough timeline and while it’s definitely heavy and sad news, it also gives you the chance to live your life exactly how you want to and not apologize to anyone or anything for living it the way you choose. We all leave this place anyway, so make the most of it. Something tells me you’re a fighter and you already know what to do. Be well my friend.

If it was me, I’d have the chemo especially as you have restricted mobility. If after the chemo you feel better and stronger you can plan to do a few things. I think if you don’t have it, you’ll have given up the chance to get stronger. As people have said here, it can add years. Really supporting you. All my best wishes. Richard

Ed it’s your life and your decision . It seems like sadly you only have a limited time to live , you said at the best 15 months with chemotherapy . The place you love is Pattaya the place you hate is hospital bed . If you can get the use of your leg back get on the plane mate and have a damn good last 12 months . You could arrange all the morbid things like funeral etc (have to be addressed) . If you stay and have chemotherapy you have all the suffering, the sickness , the pain and for what ? If they had told you chemotherapy would give you another five to ten years on your life , I would certainly be talking differently . Horrible subject but I have given you a honest answer . Which ever you choose may god be with you ❤️❤️

It’s essential to extend your life…if you have kids. As a kid-free adult, you have to balance quality of life issues. As a rough measuring stick - if you can recover your mobility (get out of bed and work on walking the halls, or wheeling yourself around) and do some physical training, GO FOR IT. If you can’t motivate yourself out of that hospital bed, chemo is going to be tough. Chemo is hard - it works by killing cancer cells only marginally faster than killing healthy cells. You need some stamina. On one trip to LOS I shared a minivan with a 40-something recovering from removal of roughly a quarter of his brain. Surgery 4 years earlier. He was only very slightly off - in the way mild Asberger Syndrome folks can be. He definitely knew want he wanted out of life. A happy ending. In fact many happy endings. He had made it and adapted. You are in much better shape. From “our” perspective we want you to fight for your life with everything you’ve got.

Eddy chemotherapy can effect people in different ways because there is different types, chemotherapy stops the cancer spreading to other parts of your body, radiotherapy is given to kill the cancer cells in a local area. I have had both but had to make a decision on that or surgery, unfortunately it’s something no one can advise you on because it’s your body. My only thought is with the treatment a individual might stand a better chance of survival, not a easy decision to make but you are like me and won’t let things beat you. As for being given a time for your condition is a irresponsible thing for a surgeon to give you because they don’t know that, we are all different and our bodies react in different ways. Eddy stay strong and positive and I am sure things will turn out ok for you. Take care Paul 🍻👍
