I enjoyed this lesson. You may be interested to know that in English we say ‘choose for yourself’ rather than ‘choose by yourself’...the term ‘choose by yourself’ would be used if you were withdrawing collaboration in making a decision, it’s rarely used.

In the Boston Area if you were asked if you could speak Chinese years ago Taishanese was assumed. About 1976 the question assumed Taishanese or Cantonese. Now since there is also Mandarin and Hokkien speakers I say be more specific, that saying do you speak Chinese is like asking if you speak European.

Hi Andy. Your videos are always intersting. I've been learning chinese alone for years now, but sometimes I think I'm rowing against the current. However,I don't give up! I spent 3 months in China some years ago, and I could notice that my friends could read complex characters when I was in a KTV. That made me feel so small...please keep up the good work. I appreciate it.

To an English-speaker, the "different dialects" are different languages. "Mandarin" and "Cantonese" are as different as French and Spanish. You must choose which one to learn. Mandarin (also called "Putonghua") is the official language of China, so I study that.

When do you use 在。Because if you say 大卫在吃披萨 (David is eating pizza) the 在 means the word "is". So when do I use 是 or 在 for "is"
@AskAndy
@AskAndy 4 года назад
Good question! But do remember that Chinese is an independant language which is not translated from English. So you can't say 在 means is just because of one sentence translated from English. Basically, 在 means: AT or TO BE AT: 他在家吃饭. Ta zai jia chifan. He at home eats food. 他在家。Ta zai jia. He is at home. And 在 can be function word for continuous tense in Chinese. That's your sentence: 大卫在吃披萨. My translation for that 在 is: to be in the process of (doing sth).

I find listening and Reading easier than speaking or writing... writing is the hardest one. Funny thing I can read chinese characters(simplified characters) up to hsk3 or hsk4 but when it comes to writing it feels like I never studied the characters haha. When it comes to listening I can listen fairly well and I can distinguish tones well though, I might make mistakes at times but when it comes to speaking I mix the tones haha. As a language learner (Amharic native speaker..English C1.. Spanish B1 and Chinese learner) I would like to say no language is easy. If you love Chinese and consistently study the right way then it is a matter of time before you will achieve your desired level of fluency in the language. Anybody can do it 😄

I have lots of problems with simplified characters. They can't be looked up through the usual radical-stroke method, several words are grouped together by abbreviated phonetics, and it is restrictive to writing from 1949 onward. I find traditional characters are better to learn, and just being able to recognize simplified characters is sufficient.
@AskAndy
@AskAndy 3 года назад
Personally, I prefer to write simplified characters because of their less strokes.

Is Chinese difficult? I would say "yes." At least for me. For me, the biggest problem is listening. The lack of phonetic variety (something you mentioned - only 409 sounds, many of which sound almost identical to one another) and most words being only 2 syllables (most words in Chinese are made up of 2 characters that have been slapped together) means that too many of the words sound "identical" to me and I can't make sense of anything that's been said. And also tones are impossible for me, which compounds the difficulty in understanding the language.
