I'm a Chinese. In my region, we don't simply call people - strangers or friends likewise - Meinu or shuaige, not unless you want to flirt with them so it would be deemed as rude sometimes. In Mainland, I have seen people call men as "Da Ge (big brother)" for man older than the speaker or "Xiao Di (younger bro)" for younger man/boy. "Xiansheng" also works. As for women, it's true they don't use "Xiao Jie"; instead I have heard people called "Da Jie (big sister) for any older women and "Xiao Mei (younger sister)" for younger women. Probably "Gu Niang" is also used but not as often as those that I had mentioned.

True. He is the reason why I sometimes watch the same scene over and over again, in order to master it. I think he gave advice for someone to watch the same drama back to back, because mastering that is like mastering 80 percent of Chinese, or something like that. Well, I thought that was too intense for me as a beginner, when I came across that comment, so over 30 dramas later, a year or so has passed and I wish I had toughed it out. 😂 Many of the dramas I watch have the same concept and conversations.

In Taiwan, Malaysia and Singapore, Xiao jie (小姐) doesnt have negative conotation, just simply means "Miss". I noticed in Mainland China, people tends to.avoid Xiaojie, and change to 姑娘, in Taiwan and other southeast asia countries, 姑娘sounds very old fashioned, look like this people come from certain dynasty era...

I appreciate that and wish you best of luck for the future. I have a few questions to ask you, if you happen to have some free time, please give me your answers. Maybe because you are a foreigner. It's common for us to ask a kid "你叫什么名字?" but we barely do that to an adult. For example, nobody has asked me that question for 5 years since my son went to kindergarten and I've always been called as “ Wu Zhengyue Baba” among the teachers and students

It's still a little confusing. What if you dont have an american name nor a title? By replying with Jiao wo "your name" jiu keyile (sorry i dont have the correct punctuation), do people just all of a sudden stop being curious about what chinese letters your name is made of? Even though you introduce yourself as Instructor Wu, do people just stop wondering which "Wu" character your name uses? I assume it has to do with specically using the term "ming zi". Is there an implied obligation to clarify associated with that word?

Ming means name, kuai means chopsticks, pang means fat. Q1.Why there is a need to add zi next to these words? Q2. When we need to add zi? Q3. When does one use zi with the roof radical and without?
@AskAndy
@AskAndy 4 года назад
Good question!
@AskAndy
@AskAndy 4 года назад
A1.We have many homophones in Chinese language. And zi is only one of them. 名字Mingzi 筷子kuaizi 胖子Pangzi
@AskAndy
@AskAndy 4 года назад
You can see the characters for #1 is different from #2& #3.
@AskAndy
@AskAndy 4 года назад
And monosyllables were dominant in ancient Chinesw because we had less things to describe while disyllables are dominant in modern Chinese. That's why it doesn't work if you just say 名ming or 筷kuai with its literal translation in English.

Chinese is a contextual language. The other syllable works like a certain context for listener to know what you are talking about. l explained more in this video👇 ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-BGm3ftiEjTQ.html

In the first example of a formal greeting, why is it okay for A to use "你“ instead of "您“ in his follow-up to B's response? (B: "叫我Andy就可以了“ A: “Andy,你好!) Is it because some social connection has already been established between A and B, so A can refer to B in a more casual manner?

In my country we use that word a lot and generally used when addressing any female stranger politely -- even use it on waiter. It's just cultural differences I guess. We also ask the name of a person we but don't really asked about how it's written because not all Chinese in my country are able to read/write Chinese although they could speak the language. Once I was in Beijing and I addressed the officer at the subway as xiao jie because it was so natural to me 😅 then my son pointed out my mistake. 😂

Andy, thank you for your wonderful personality and way of teaching Mandarin. I'm curious, why would one call a blue-collar worker, "master"? 'Master' in English is from 'master and servant'. The master is the superior, the boss. In the olden days it was for addressing a person of a notable status, higher than your average mister. Secondly, if milkman has anything to do with prostitution, I missed it. Milkman jokes usually refer to the extramarital affair by the wives. I'm not saying you're wrong because I could very well be ignorant of the matter. Please give me some links that show the connection you're claiming. Finally, did you study in the US? Your English is mainly American. And it is very good. There are people who have gone to America and even after so many years of still living there, who speak less clearly. Thanks again for your truly useful Mandarin lessons, look forward to your reply!

No problem, my friend.
@AskAndy

Let me answer your questions one by one.
@AskAndy
@AskAndy 4 года назад
1.This is my hypothetical answer angain. Master was the original meaning for "shifu"and it has become a modern address for a blue collar worker maybe because: 1.They share something similar that the blue collar workers are technicians in their fields, like driving or repairing, etc. 2.We want to show our respect in calling them "specialists" instead of addressing "manual workers".
@AskAndy
@AskAndy 4 года назад
2. The only link between "milkman" and "xiaojie" is they both mean something else and most natives can read between the lines. That's why l say it must be quoted.

A better example than "milkman" would be "mistress". Say "She is a mistress" and that will definitely be suggestive....
