Caffeine raises cortisol levels. Coffee is liquid stress. It also interferes with a persons sleep architecture hindering REM. If you drink coffee regularly and then remove it abruptly, see how you feel from the withdrawal. Coffee is an addiction and just like nicotine people try to find reasons that it’s good for you because they themselves are addicted..

PS. besides black coffee only, would be good to parse out coffee drinkers who have varying amounts of total polyphenol intake. Like many single dietary interventions, wonder if the positive effect goes away in the context of a very good diet rich in polyphenols. In other words, does coffee add to health( by way of all cause mortality) if one is already eating very well. The things I can think of are increased autophagy (Pubmed, Quido Kroemer MD PhD researcher), positive liver effects (Pubmed), and countering calcium oxalate kidney stones (PubMed)
@abirhasankhan9327
@abirhasankhan9327 3 месяца назад
Yes, a LOT of variables... However as for singular interventions, one study that has long intrigued me is the one where they saw that regular lifetime smokers had a lower chance of developing Parkinson's disease. Now we all know how utterly bad smoking is. Nevertheless, there WAS something in smoking cigerettes that contained SOMETHING that combatted Parkinson's in old age, whether that's the nicotine or the Monoamine oxidase inhitors present in the smoke is unknown. Still it baffles me to this day that even despite all the bad things in cigerette smoke, there was something that had a positive effect. Does that tell people who are at high risk of parkinsons to start smiking? No way! Unless they want to die of lung cancer first. Likewise, there could be some things in coffee as well... Too much coffee might be detrimental for, say, people with high blood pressure or cardiac diseases, but then again, we need to find out the main beneficial components...

Probably it's about the amount of coffee beans that's used. I drank 6-8 cups semi-strong coffee per day, each with 9 grams ground coffee beans. I've recently had symptoms of overdose (I'm 65): * Eye migraine (that's weird flickering objects during a minute or so without headache) and more recently * Tremor in right index finger and area next to thumb during a few seconds every 30 minutes or so. I reduced my intake to two cups in the morning and symptoms are gone. I noticed longer sleep, from 5-6 hrs per night to 7-8. 30 years ago at work I was seated near a self service coffee machine with excellent filter coffee, my daily score was 15 cups without issues 😮

The thing is, the data can be interpreted in quite a different way. It is possible that there is a certain genotype that doesn't process caffeine the same way most people do--- say, a polymorphism in one of the liver detox pathways, like glycination, that slows down the detoxification of caffeine. These folks might naturally avoid coffee because it would make them feel more jittery and unwell than the normal user. It might be the case that that his detox gene is associated with a shorter lifespan.

It would also help to know the type of coffee and how it was prepared. My understanding is that whole bean coffee freshly ground and consumed black and without ANY additives provides the most nutrients. The freshness of the whole bean coffee is also important as it should be ground and consumed within a three month range to get the max bang for the buck. It’s hard for my to believe that something like a Folgers instant coffee would offer the same benefits as an organic Ethiopian whole bean coffee made in a French press. I worship coffee as a gift of the gods.
@LVArturs
@LVArturs 3 месяца назад
Well, it can go both ways, since the more filtered and processed coffee definitely has less of the beneficial compounds, but might also have less deleterious ones which may also be present in a coffee bean.
@jamesgilmore8192
@jamesgilmore8192 3 месяца назад
The addition of milk etc has been shown to make coffee less beneficial, but I don't remember the exact mechanism. There is debate about caffeine vs polyphenols, but both seem to help. If folgers has more of the relevant polyphenol that is beneficial then maybe it could be better....there isn't good data on specific compounds and what exactly they are doing.

Here are the details from the first study mentioned. Notice the words "might reduce" and "data suggesting that". Results: We included 21 cohort study articles (10 103 115 study participants and 240 303 deaths). We found a nonlinear association between coffee consumption and all-cause mortality (Pnonlinearity < 0.001). Compared with no or rare coffee consumption, with a consumption of 3 cups day-1 , the risk of all-cause mortality might reduce 13% (RR = 0.87; 95% confidence interval = 0.84-0.89). Conclusions: The findings of the present study provide quantitative data suggesting that coffee consumption plays a role in reducing the risk of all-cause mortality. Similar inverse associations are found for caffeinated coffee and decaffeinated coffee.

Have you ever looked into the subclinical long-term effects of fluoride in tea? Even Japanese matcha can have up to 6mg/L. Fluoride can increase manganese concentrations and decrease magnesium, etc. Musculoskeletal disorders and arthritic-like symptoms are very prevalent in countries where tea consumption is highest, like Ireland, and chronic fluoride exposure could be to blame.
