Interesting topic Mike, especially with tea being so accessible. Here is the recent paper where both coffee and tea were evaluated: "Consumption of coffee and tea with all-cause and cause-specific mortality: a prospective cohort study, Chen et al 2022", with 1-2 coffee, 3+ cups of tea appearing optimal.

Thanks James, I'm familiar with that paper-one reason that I prefer the paper in the video instead is because of the association with biological age, or more specifically, the composite of 15-18 biomarkers. That, to me, is a step-up in evidence above ACM risk.

That's a fair point, there could be a substitution effect. I believe you can adjust for that in most of these studies though, as the questions in these surveys usually addresses other drinks, including sugary soda.

The trifecta of practices that irritate me: 1. Epidemiological dietary data, 2. Biological age calculators as end points, 3. A study done in China either unpublished or published in a fringe journal.
@jamesgilmore8192
@jamesgilmore8192 6 месяцев назад
On 1) the N for the dietary data is well powered so that is OK, except for the well known recall bias problems with those surveys. On 3) we can't use location as a reason as there are many good studies from china. On 2) there is good reason it ended up in a fringe journal. And if I were reviewing this it would be the use of biological age calculators as a surrogate endpoint for something definitive like mortality. To the authors credit they used two cohorts which was a good idea. Although you can see that led to muddy waters in the not very convincing CMEC and UKB tea consumption - BA acceleration figures.

interesting that they didn't distinguish between kinds of black tea, nor pu'er or kombucha. I speculate that the reason why people in the UK who use lots of tea ends up looking different may be due to behavior. In China the rituals around tea use are correlated with using it medicinally and intended to promote digestion and other things tied to gut health. In the UK, there is a higher selection of crap tea used as a substitute for coffee and those who would drink a lot may be trying to treat a metabolic disorder that drives fatigue. in particular, the liver function issue you mentioned -> it would be something people would select tea for as it acts as bile inducer.

Hi michael, i was wondering.. given your dept of research into the aging field, beside correlations between possible influencing variables in nutrition exercise and sleep did you implement counter measures in your home for sure long acting damaging agents like background ionizing radiation and long exposure to microwave radiation? Simply having no background radiation whatsoever in your bedroom where we all roughly spend 1/3 of our lives may be the little push the body needs, a constant stressing agent for the epigenome removed.. would be interesting if you implemented that and checked how your data would change. Cheer up. It may still hold true for green tea, as one tea may skew the overall results of the studies referenced. The teas studied have different properties. For example: "Green and black tea both contain caffeine, a known stimulant. Green tea contains less caffeine than black tea - about 35 mg per 8-ounce (230-ml) cup, compared with 39-109 mg for the same serving of black tea ( 2 , 8 , 9 ). " Source: Green Tea vs Black Tea: Which One Is Healthier? - Healthline Only one study conducted in the Fukuoka Diabetes Registry including 4923 patients (2790 men and 2133 women) with type 2 diabetes followed for 5.3 years revealed that the combined consumption of ≥ 2 cups/day of coffee and ≥ 4 cups/day of green tea had 63% lowest risk for all-cause mortality [14]. Furthermore, the studies on Green Tea alone, tend to show that 4 or more cups is better. Chen, Y., Zhang, Y., Zhang, M. et al. Consumption of coffee and tea with all-cause and cause-specific mortality: a prospective cohort study. BMC Med 20, 449 (2022). Over the 11 years of follow-up (follow-up rate, 86.1%), 4,209 participants died. Over the seven years of follow-up (follow-up rate of 89.6%), 892 participants died of cardiovascular disease and 1,134 participants died of cancer. Green tea consumption was inversely associated with mortality due to all causes and due to cardiovascular disease. The inverse correlation for all-cause mortality was greater in women (P = 0.03 for interaction with sex). In men, the multivariate hazard ratios of mortality due to all causes associated with different green tea consumption frequencies were 1.00 (reference) for less than 1 cup/d, 0.93 (95% confidence interval [CI] 0.83-1.05) for 1-2 cups/day, 0.95 (95% CI 0.85-1.06) for 3-4 cups/d, and 0.88 (95% CI 0.79-0.98) for 5 or more cups/d (P = 0.03 for trend). The data for women were 1.00, 0.98 (95% CI 0.84-1.15), 0.82 (95% CI 0.70-0.95), and 0.77 (95% CI 0.67-0.89), respectively (P < 0.001 for trend). Kuriyama S, et al. Oher molecules remain in the tea leaves. these studies do not list the molecules in the hot water so we have no idea which molecules increase or decrease acceleration of biological age. Different Tea leaves have different molecules. It's unlikely that all tea different leaves have the same biological effect. As stated I believe these studies have random good results which would not be duplicated with an ITS study.

tea derives from camellia sinensis plant, the different phytochemicals present in tea depend the way the plant is processed. black tea is oxidized provides theaflavins and thearubigans iirc, while green is not oxidized providing EGCG for example. however given it is from the same plant, their effects may still be the same, perhaps green is better than black etc

That's a fair point with these studies as Mike mentioned. It would be great to know what the main compounds in say green tea and black tea are doing both separately and as a cuppa.

Yes, nobody's claiming causation.
