I've recently discovered the specialty coffee world, and both theese channels. I watched the James Hoffmann's one first too, but then the one that's titled: Now I got copied?! (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-uRMbG5Lo-kE.html). And this one after that, which makes it more hillarious (irony).

A cup measurement is different depending where you live. In the USA it is 8 oz or 236.5 ml. I think a cup of coffee is sometimes 4.5 oz or 5 oz depending on where you are. My Breville coffee maker is marked at 5 oz per cup. So how many ml are in 5 cups of coffee as discussed in the video?

Some interesting info - thank you. If anyone is interested to learn more about falling asleep with caffeine in the system can I suggest the content in Matthew Walker’s book ‘why we sleep’. It argues that just falling asleep is not enough, it must be high quality sleep with all of its stages (mind-blowing stuff happens in these), which will be limited with caffeine. He adds that if sleep is poor it could lead to a caffeine dependency cycle. On learning this I began my rule of ‘no caffeine after midday’. Great channel guys!

I read about this like a year ago, we're on a matter addict to caffeine, to the level if we're not drinking at least one cup in the morning well feel dwozy, so the boost effect gets lost cause of this dependency

I love coffee, I've learned a lot about brewing and spent a lot on gear, but I've come to the conclusion that it can't be healthy to constantly take over your body's natural ability to control whether you're tired or not. Coffee puts your body in a state of stress, shallow breathing, irritability and fast heart rate. I think it should be taken in moderation

It seems that there isn't really a standard size, and each of the studies they looked at used their own size but that shouldn't really matter that much. From the mentioned paper, "We considered the random effects model the most appropriate to be used in pooling estimates because the heterogeneity in study designs, populations, methods of coffee preparation, and cup sizes meant we would not expect a single true effect size common to all studies."

This is an excellent summary of information on the subject. One element that viewers might research further is cafestol, a powerful elevator of LDL cholesterol. I learned about this when my LDL level went up very high after switching to French press brewing. Espresso filters out much more cafestol, but still leaves 100X more than when paper filters are used. And after adding filtration following full immersion, my LDL level quickly returned to normal. There may be individual differences in cafestol response. It would also be helpful to relate caffeine levels to weight of roasted coffee as opposed simply to number of cups of coffee consumed. About 34 gm of arabica would contain around the 400 mg, indicated as a "safe daily dose" if it were 100% extracted -- extraction being affected by species, degree of roast, water temperature and contact time, grind size. So I think weight of ground coffee utilized per day is a parameter worth considering.
@itsamess3216
@itsamess3216 3 года назад
I agree on the cholesterol impact. Drinking coffee from the machine at work boosted my cholesterol levels seriously. Could bring it down quickly after changing to filtered coffee.

Thank you for the video and Happy new year! There is one interesting question which wasn’t covered, or I missed it in the video, - Coffee oils, I remember some articles on the web stated that filter coffee particularly better than, for instance, Turkish boiled coffee as filter filters most of the oils. How do these oils influence the body?
@78anant420
@78anant420 3 года назад
Oils increase cholesterol. My LDL skyrocketed to the danger zone and I'm shutting off caffeine and coffee. Most likely it was oiis in espresso, but not willing to take the risk with a paper filter
@derekdlick2516
@derekdlick2516 3 года назад
If you French press and brew in a way that doesn’t get rid of the oil your cholesterol levels will. Rise. Eat an egg to balance it. J/k I just keep my fancy brew styles for special occasions.

Very good video on coffee and health. Lighter roasted does have more CGA's but the amount of CGA's in coffee vary from cultivar, region, altitude, rainfall and soil conditions so starting with coffee tested for high levels in the green will deliver more in the cup when roasted correctly. Excellent overview.

Coffee makes your body clock runs faster, it's like an upper where you become alert and hyperactive but the effects among others are sleep disorder, stressful feeling, constipation as well. When I totally stopped caffeine (coffee), and after the withdrawal period of 10 days, I began ti have a clearer mind, much relax , constipation was gone, and began feeling happier. Promoting coffee I would say this is a hype by coffee companies.

Nice video, but I have reservations about the part about sleep. The half-life of caffeine in the body is about 6 hours in average (which means after 6 hours 50% of the caffeine still persist in the body). Caffeine levels not only affect whether a person falls asleep or not, but also affect the overall quality of sleep and the effectiveness of brain cleansing. Poor sleep quality can then in the long run result or contribute to the development of various diseases of civilization. For this reason, I no longer drink coffee in the afternoon. Caffeine for pregnant is absolute no-go because the fetus needs extremely much sleep for proper brain development even during the day, and caffeine also affects the fetus' sleep. I highly recommend the book "Why we sleep" by Matthew Walker.
@emmel4fun
@emmel4fun 3 года назад
I always drink coffee at night - usually with cream and sweetener (except on really hot days and nights) and don't notice any difference in my sleep pattern. Recently I went to a dinner at my niece's house and about 11pm we had dessert and coffee. I drank two cups of black coffee - one Nespresso and one Starbucks Keurig coffee and when I got home I slept like a baby. I know it affects people differently.
@RunaReturnee
@RunaReturnee 3 года назад
@@emmel4fun Of course, everyone is different and reacts differently to caffeine. But as I wrote, caffeine affects not only whether you fall asleep, but also what processes take place during sleep and which do not. A lot of people around me say that after a few beers and shots, they also sleep like babies. But this does not mean that all the cleansing processes in the body will proceed as they should. And that's the problem, a person can feel OK for a long time and then after twenty years a health problem comes and you don't understand why. Research is still in its infancy, but so far it appears that caffeine and alcohol just as blue light (LED bulbs, displays,...) in the late evening and in the night can actually cause a number of diseases of civilization in relation to sleep. See the book I mentioned, which is based on evidence-based medicine.
