There aren’t many large-scale economic studies on aquaponics system profitability because it’s still a relatively new technique for commercial practitioners. Another limiting factor for the long-term study of aquaponic agriculture profitability is the high upfront investment cost, making it a costly endeavor for the average person.
A 2014 study from Johns Hopkins University surveyed 257 commercial aquaponics agriculture growers, most located in the US. It tallied many metrics about their operation and some metrics on financial success. Some key findings:
1.Most operations use an aquaponics greenhouse, often in addition to another structure
2.The average size of the operations is .03 acres (1,307 sq. ft.). About 40% of operations are located at the growers home; the remainder were on commercial or agricultural zoned land.
3.Most growers used a combination of two or more aquaponics systems (media beds, wicking beds, rafts, nutrient film technique, and vertical towers), with rafts and media beds being the most common.
4.The median year that respondents had begun practicing aquaponics was 2010.
5.31% of respondents were profitable in the past year.
6.55% expected to be profitable within the next 12 months and most growers (75%) expected to be profitable in the next 36 months.
7.For 70% of respondents, their commercial aquaponics operation was not the primary source of income.

Yes it's expensive but it's cool to watch it everyday sounds of running water makes our minds relax thus create good vibes

The biggest set back is that it requires an extremely educated work force that is willing to work harder for less money. One mistake will make the whole system collapse. You can’t have an operation that pays its workers well and still be profitable. Extremely difficult to hold onto workers who could use the education they have at a better paying job that’s not so repetitive

Could sandponics be more profitable as pumps operate way less time plus the water usage is also reduced?
@EcoSnooki
@EcoSnooki 2 года назад
Use sand instead of soil has many advantages: it is clean, better thermal mass capability than soil, etc. The best of all, sands do not have contain weed seeds - a lot in soil. So using sands as grow media save the pain-in-the-back trouble of having to remove weeds.

I find it insane how aquaponics are advertised to have no other input than fish food. In reality, a whole bunch of macro- and micronutrients have to be added daily, in order to optain a high quality product.

Can you build a Greenhouse that uses Geothermal heating and cooling as well as being an Aquaponic Greenhouse?

If you use solar for pumping, can it be cost effective?
@EcoSnooki
@EcoSnooki 2 года назад
You can use solar for pumping. But need to use 3x watts of solar panels for that particular wattage of pump for getting the initial starting power for the pump.

If you blend it into agrotourism and energy production, etc of course it is profitable - easily!

Hii, I am a student in my senior year and I wanted to do my biology research in aquaponic systems. But I don’t know what components I should test or how I could turn creating an aquaponic system into an experiment. I was thinking maybe testing the different types of nutrients that I use, but wouldn’t know which ones I should test.

the problem with everythin these day: materials costs are FAR TOO HIGH, and the profits are controlled by market values. its just plains costs too much to build a profitable system, effectively delaying potential profits. a person (not already wealthy enough to have free capital) would have to have a main job financing the operation, which then limits the time investment necessary to make a business grow and run. aquaponics CAN be a major player in the climate change game, but reality is its priced out of most peoples capability. what most of these videos fail to mention to the normal person is that most of these folks doing this at a profitable scale, were already well off before they started. ALOT of folks making these videos give a false impression that theyre broke or just have normal income. appearances are very deceiving. for a normal person, the debt required to reach sustainability and profitability, is a major turn off

"...for a normal person, the debt required to reach sustainability and profitability, is a major turn off"... Same as with most business's. A turtle doesn't get very far in life unless it sticks it's neck out.

I think you are over thinking this a bit. The term "commercial" is often associated with buying "professional" equipment, which in my opinion is extremely overpriced in the pond, aquarium, and pool market. I mention these because they use literally the same equipment. A lot of what you see in this video is over engineered. Break it down to its roots, pun intended, aquaponics is just 1 or 2 tanks, lighting, a heater (for the fish), plumbing, a pump, and fish. All of the fancy containers, overhead systems, and floating trays are greatly over engineered. Lighting frankly pisses me off the most because if you do enough research on lighting, for instance T5 vs LEDs, you'll find that you are really paying an absurd amount for design and brand name. T5 systems you can really use just about any ballast/fixtures, but T5 bulbs need to be changed about every year or so. Perfect example of over priced equipment, I had a pond pump that I use for one of my coral tanks and needed to replace it. Everywhere I looked places wanted $180 for the exact pump. So I called up the manufacturer in Louisiana. They sold it to me for $42 with shipping. My guess is that the equipment and setup is not the issue, its the logistics of sales, packaging, delivery, and the day to day operation (paying employees) is where it gets expensive. Stuff like electricity, fish food, water testing, lease (rent), and heating/cooling cost can be calculated easily. Figure out these later parts and I'm sure youll be fine.

Yup it also requires a extremely educated work force that is underpaid. You can’t pay employees what they deserve and still be profitable.
