In this video you will find out why data recovery on this Fujitsu laptop hard drive is impossible. While most of our hard drive recovery efforts are successful, there are cases where it's just not possible to recover the information stored on the drive.

Do you guys recover data from DVDs? If so how much would it cost and do you have any recommendations as to how I could recover it myself? I have a DVD with some special childhood memories on it and it's all scratched up and I've tried it in about 5 different optical drives and it won't read.
@acsdata
@acsdata 5 лет назад
We haven't worked with DVD's in a very long time. If it's scratched, there won't be anything we can do. You might look and see if there is any type of polish that is sold. I know it may seem weird, but if you can polish the scratches out of the plastic outer body, it might give you a better shot at it being able to read. I would never do it on a customer's disk, but years ago on a disk of my own, I used like 2000 grit sand paper and wet sanded a scratched disk to get some scratches out. I got lucky and it worked.

Have you taken it to get resurfaced? They are hard to find but some retro gaming stores have machines that remove most minor scratches and repairs major scratches to make the disc readable from there is just as simple copying the data to a HDD

Was the drive secured with any kind of shock absorption in place?

Ooof, that is super bad... can I ask some stuff out of curiosity though? Are all HDDs made with glass or super fragile platters or that case is kind of an exception? Could there be a way to fashion a custom head reader to try to get some of the data back, no matter how little it'd be? I mean, I get it that it doesn't make much sense to do this on a commercial level... but just curious if given enough money, time and expertise in all sorts of areas, it's still be possible to retrieve something. Thanks for the content!

Most platters are made out of aluminum. You can read more about platters here: acsdata.com/hard-drive-platters/ A drive in this condition would not be recoverable regardless of the time and money available. Data is striped across all platter surfaces, and one of those platters...half the surface area of all data storage...has been obliterated. You might be able to put the shard of glass under an electron microscope and see single bits, but the actual data is gone.

I once had a dead drive that I wanted to see what would happen to it if I dropped it on concrete (from a height of 5 stories up), and I was so surprised to find the platters had basically turned into sand, they shattered so thoroughly. I’m guessing it’s for extremely secure data destruction at the end of a drive’s life. Before then I never knew hard drives could be made of glass.

hello I have a scartched hard disk platter problem. my hard disk is wd 4 tb.could you please recommend to me a service place to repair the hard disk? Tanks
@acsdata
@acsdata 2 года назад
You may want to visit our website at acsdata.com and setup a case. Most of the time when platters are damaged, the data is not recoverable. However, if there is a small amount of scoring limited to one of the surfaces on a drive that size, there's a chance we may be able to get 50% of the data or maybe more.

I do this on purpose before i throw away a computer with hdd. I dont trust software programs to eliminate everything. But if i open up the hdd and break the plate / scratch it up real good i know for sure no one can ever use it for identity theft for example.

i heard the FBI can directly read the data off the platter fragments and put it together to recover the data. is this not true, or?
@acsdata
@acsdata 5 лет назад
Unfortunately, that is the work of movies and fiction. At most they could read the individual bits...and there is typically 512 bits per sector...and in most cases there are least a billion sectors on modern hard drives. Not to mention, multiple platter drives have the data striped across each platter surface at various increments, so you would need to know where the 1's and 0's of a single file stopped and then where they picked up on the next platter surface.

@GaryBeltz

harrvey they might be able to recover SOME of the data but I can almost guarantee you they won’t get it all even if you solder the glass back together where the glass was cracked there may be bits that aren’t recoverable.

Is there a Chance that an SSD survives such an Accident?
@Coiltec
@Coiltec 4 года назад
Yes, the chance is actually pretty high. SSDs just contain a circuit board with memory chips and a controller, and are far less fragile than a HDD. And even if the circuit board is damaged, a lab could desolder the controller and memory chips and solder them on a board from another SSD of the exact same type. That is far less delicate than repairing HDDs and doesn't require a clean room. Only if the memory chips or the controller is cracked one is out of luck; that's not recoverable. But it's quite unlikely that the chips break from mechanical shock. Bending is a different story, however. But in this video, the HDD doesn't seem to have been bent.

No they can't. The platter has been physically damaged to the point where it's practically a jigsaw puzzle. If you watch videos on how to completely destroy a hard drive, it pretty much leaves the platters in the same state as this one.
