Back in the 1980's I stopped purchasing Seagate drives because several of my SCSI drives had failed within a week or two after the warranty period expired. Called Seagate and they said it was a "known problem" but would not replace or repair the drives since the warranty period expired. Since then I have informed other users not to purchase their products for their lack of reputable support.

I can see a way to regain the alignment, but it would require an automated iterative approach moving the top disk relative to the bottom one. Better not to lose the alignment. How do you do that?

Where might an old hobbiest find that software. PC3k? I e got an old drive with lots of old pictures. I originally made an MDisk of all them when it was about to crash. Now ive misplaced the disk and really need to get these pictures.

Damn, what a lucky recovery. My drive was WD40EZRZ (4 TB Blue), the heads have pretty much failed after a power flux, and the recovery lab said that the service sector was partially damaged. But luckily they got almost all the stuff recovered from it despite that, was much worse than a software/board problem.
@acsdata
@acsdata 4 месяца назад
System area corruption is pretty common when a there is any type of voltage irregularity to the heads. They just start writing garbage data, and before you know it, the translator is corrupted and the drive cannot be read. Sometimes the corruption is so severe that it takes a lot of effort and thinking outside the box to get back to a point where the sectors can be read again.

@@acsdata Yeah, when I called the lab they immediately told me to not power on the drive and get it to them as-is.

I have the problem that after replacing the PSU I was too lazy to replace the peripheral cables. Coincidentally, the cables not only looked identical, but they also fit into the power supply. (Power supply with cable management). What I unfortunately didn't see is that the so-called neutral conductor was in a different place. Luckily the SSDs survived, but the HDD was damaged. I suspect there was a short circuit on the board, even if there is no visible damage to the individual SMD components. I ordered a used circuit board (2060-701590-000 REV A) from overseas and replaced it. Now the motor is turning again (at low speed) but nothing else is happening. Of course, this could be due to a circuit board (newly delivered but apparently defective). I have now ordered a used hard drive of the same construction. If it still doesn't work after replacing the circuit board, does it make sense to replace the "actual data carrier", i.e. the disk from the old defective hard drive, into the new hard drive?

I used to do it years ago, when my hard drive gives a no read error I used to wrap it in plastic and freezing it overnight, I take it out of the freezer, wipe the frost off and then drop it at about 4-5 inches high (to jar everything loose), install it and then it works fine again. It works for about 4 to 8 months then it gives a no read error again so I put it in the freezer again and it'll work fine again. I probably did that about ten times then got tired doing it so replaced it with a new one.

My husband was able to revive my hard drive with the freezer method and I’m so glad he did!! Wive’s tale, myth, whatever- if it’s dead and you’re going to lose everything, why not try it?? Not GOOD to do? Why not? If it’s dead, it’s dead and you’re going to lose it anyways. I do know that hubby left it in the freezer for about three days. Maybe that’s what did it cause I was sure praying for a resurrection! 😂

Thank you for the video. My Seagate hard drive stopped being detected by BIOS. I got the identical drive, but different serial number. Is it better to swap the platters or the magnets and the arm?

The first thing I saw when I opened the drive was one of the tiny head sliders on the platter. After looking at the head I found the there were no sliders on it at all. Not only did I have to remove the platters but I also had to find the sliders. WHere were the sliders? All on the platters. Everything went back together and the drive worked, after I got a new head.

In some cases a platter move is not necessary! Replacement of the reader head or arm can fix a non reading issue., some times. If there's no platter damage and your platter motor works. Impacts can damage both the platter and your reader heads. I love this video and this can work in extreme conditions. But it's not always necessary!✌️

The amount of fear sold in this video is unnecessarily immense. If you are not clumsy you have little to worry about swapping hard disk platters at home. The chances of error and a botched swap are not as high as claimed here, and the best evidence you have is the video itself. It requires no special superpower and that's why it worked here on the first attempt.

Thwy charge like $2500 for it. No amount of fear mongering could ever get me to pay that much because I simply do not have that. The warnings are for the people with expendable savings who are risk-averse and can be swayed into parting with that much dough on a whim.

Actually, is replacing the board without the bios results in the drive being not able to read a single sector (reporting sector unreadable) or is there something worse in my case? I have a Seagate 1er164-302

You have to be in a protective suit and operating in a clean room with laminar airflow and HEPA filters, because any particle that lands on the platters can and will cause problems up to and including completely destroying whatever data remained accessible. Learn what you're talking about before you make yourself sound like an idiot.

I just did this with a 4tb WD Passport. The white plastic head divider just clicks back while keeping the heads separated. You can pull the filter and put the tape on pretty well. I transferred all of the disks pretty easily. Unfortunately, the top platter was too damaged for the new head to read. Still, not bad for learning on RU-vid. Good video.

I just tried it out of boredom, and no luck at all. Drive is ice cold to the touch, but it still clicks sadly. It's fine since it's not critical data that was lost on it+I had backups, but I figured I would give it a shot

It's a worse idea to pay $600 or $1100 or more for data recovery companies. The best idea is to spend $80 on another drive and do regular backups.
