Im not even sure if it's possible to make ironic subversive art anymore, when parodying consumerism only accelerates the system it's critiquing. most of the public is disgusted by its reflection in the mirror of pop culture, but refuses to change

I dunno. Some Pepe memes dealt out levels of subversive irony that really shocked people.
@halguy5745

@@stefxstefani at least Kanye adds his own flair to it. hoodies and tees have his recognizable oversized fit. but yeah it's based on the same principle of blending high and low fashion brands

@@bizarro20daves nah, they went into the exact opposite direction. the whole point of these memes was to blur the line between irony and sincerity even further, to the point where it's no longer recognisable. you're both of these things and none of these things at the same time. it's post irony. it's a good troll but it also disables all possible conversation around the subject

I’ve been thinking about this idea a lot lately ever since the release of the destroyed Paris sneaker, it’s insane price tag really is nothing compared to the prices actual fine modern art pieces auction for, as you mentioned in this video. Something about Demna’s designs really speak to me, I had a few people ask me last year if Balenciaga is my favorite brand since I wear it so often to which that thought made me squirm a little, it wasn’t until later that I realized I’m not a balencihead or whatever but more so a big fan of Demna’s work so for me it’s almost worth it to pay the price for an oversized hoodie, but also because I have arms like an orangutan and the sleeves be always on point ;) thanks for -posting this video, gonna go read about dadaism now, you’ve peaked my curiosity

Brilliant video, Oliver. Keep doing it and congrats! P.S Demna hit the creator of this video in DM: “Hello Oliver, someone has sent me a video you made on some of my work and I must admit I rarely watch anything related to what I do but I wanted to thank you for understanding so much more that many other people do. My work has been misunderstood and misinterpreted ever since l started so it feels very good to see that there are people who actually get it and appreciate it. This is why I wanted to express my gratitude to you because it is so important to say thank you. Have a great day and all my very best. Demna X Accept message request from Demna” This was posted on his story today.

The most relevant designer of our generation. Normally when brands become to big just like rappers or singers the content becomes more commercial. Demna found a way to stay true and stay at the helm. His 2017 show (for Vetements) he invited random ppl to try on the collection in the streets of Switzerland and each person got to choose their poses out of a catalogue of fashion poses from the 50s. Who else is doing that? We are witnessing greatness. I own a lot of Balenci and the quality and subtleties you find in the pieces are unmatched. Makes most other brands boring. The price point is high but so is LV and Amiri and the designs there are underwhelming. Demna has the attention of people from 4yrs to 70 yrs old. Can't wait to see what's next . Thanks for the video.

I still don’t love the idea of not fighting the actual fight against consumerism and economic growth but just ”playing along” and trolling along the way still producing and making millions of clothes and millons of euros.

love this analogy and the whole video in generel , thank you your effort . Neverthless i do have one question in mind , while i was watching the video i had a thought in mind ; i personally think that demna does not want people buying his work because it beats the whole point of fighting fast fashion

I find Balenciaga funny and sometimes pretty interesting and cool with their links to underground art/music scenes hyperealism (especially when he’s taking the piss out of celebrities like Kim Kardashian who think they’re being cool by wearing his stuff), but at the same time pop art has been done to death at this point and just seems to repeat the message ‘we live in a society’ without doing much about it. The supply chain and model of selling is obviously the same and as destructive as the rest of fashion, he just gets to sit back and be pretentious about it lol. Brands like Edna St Louis does ironic much more interestingly I think, having irony with a move towards sustainable production and offering inspiration as well as just cynicism.

incredible video definitely has a different view of Demna I had never really took time to consider before, although personally there are few pieces I align myself with from Balenciaga. This perspective truly is an art form that people fail to consider and Demna is doing a perfect job at displaying this foolishness of the industry through these collections. Such a great video love what you are doing Oliver!

10:33 “and thus demand respect” my only issue with your video is this statement. your appraisal of pop art is implied, but not explained. is pop art worthy of respect? I’m not sure, and it’s the same reason I’m not sure if I like what demna does. maybe that’s what they want, idk, but I’d love to dig in to that question - do they demand respect? what they do in interesting, and they’re successful, but is it artistically worthwhile? is it _good_? i understand that your video was not attempting to answer this question. Your video does a fantastic job at drawing that connection between demna and warhol, pop art and anti fashion. I’m only critical, or, more so, interested in further conversation because I really did enjoy and appreciate the video. So, it’s worthy of discussion. Not to come off as needling, I genuinely think you’re the best fashion youtuber out there!
@margemason

maybe that question’s not for a youtuber to answer. maybe each individual should develop their own response, separate from influence. but I’d still love to hear yours

Aside from the fact that Warhol already is too big in fashion to be compared to Demna. Its like saying Demna is the new Cristobal Balenciaga like I dont get the Relationship!
@yourfashionarchive427
@yourfashionarchive427 2 года назад
@@margemason my point is that there is more to the clothes than the sensationalism and the absurdity, that there is context behind it and a well thought out cohesive theme to all the designs. “demand respect” might be a bit too dramatic of a statement, just good for a persuasive essay. I personally don’t own any balenciaga and don’t see myself owning it in the future but I think it DESERVES respect the same way Warhol does even thought his brillo boxes are just brillo boxes and his campbell soup can works are just screenprinted campbell soup cans not even physically made by him.
@margemason
@margemason 2 года назад
@@yourfashionarchive427 Just rewatched the video - I think my criticism was overly harsh. In laying out the history of pop art, you illustrate why it does demand respect, at least to some level. So, then, your statement isn’t unfair. Just thought it would be interesting to discuss, so thanks for the reply! Again, love your videos, this one was great

i think you ought to push your analysis of duchamp and johns, which i think causes the video to end up missing the specificity of what's going on with art v. fashion. duchamp and johns get this quick analysis that essentially paint them as having a contempt for their audience, but that's really quite far from their context. i'm not sure i would even conceptually link them to modern fashion... the demna stuff reminds me of an anodyne example of institutional critique, more than anything.
