As someone who works at doggy daycare, I really want people to understand that if your dog can't handle the dog park, you should NOT bring that dog to doggy daycare. I've had to break up a lot of fights because of people like this thinking doggy daycare would be great for their dog to get rid of their aggression, when it actually makes it a lot worse. Luckily, this dog did not get aggressive at daycare, but if your dog is stressed out, you never know when he or she will snap. Doggy daycare is great for dogs who like to play and be around other dogs, but it is NOT safe for anyone if the dog is aggressive.

My little Havanese was attacked by my neighbors large dogs in her own yard, and that was the end of her daycare days. She's fine now, after a lot of hard work, on walks and with dogs she knows. Daycare is just too scary for her with dogs running up close to her, even if they're not engaging with her. It's like PTSD for her, and she'd sit and stare at the gate until I picked her up. It makes me sad, because she used to love it.

@katrinathomas5236

For sure! And people also need to understand that there is a difference between a dog having a play date with one or two neighbors and being in a group of 10 + daycare dogs- even dog-friendly pets can get overwhelmed in large groups. Luckily, if the dog likes the kennel attendants and the owners need a place to take him sometimes, many daycares offer a one-on-one playtime option with an employee.

She was really scared and shy, so I asked if we (the guests) were allowed to give her some chicken, so she would associate people with good things. Eventuelly I got to play with her, but she bit my hand twice, so I squealed like Victoria did, and she actually looked at me to see if I was hurt. This is very upsetting to me as someone who worked at a doggie day care and boarding facility for 3 years. We were told to tell every single owner that it was a positive experience for the dog, we were basically told to lie. And when something bad happened it was always a surprise for the owners and they were understandably mad. This is the reason I ulimately quit because I saw so much wrong at that place, it was overwhelming and emotional. Most of the dogs did not enjoy it and would have much rather been home. It's the reason I will never EVER put any of my pets in a day care or boarding facility. I think the most important thing anyone who has pets can learn is their language. So many people are like these owners and think they know their dogs when they actually don't. If you know what your animal is trying to communicate then you can make the right choice without relying on workers who are told to lie to make profit.

If I'm petting my pitbull who doesn't even like being petted the boxer gets real stiff looking kinda pissed off and if I don't stop petting my pitbull the boxer will just sit there and stare at the wall she wont even look at me. It's kinda sad cause I like to have my pitbull inside but dont like leaving the boxer outside alone. When there both inside they dont really get along sometimes they even growl at each other when they do that I just throw them outside. They have never fought before that I know of anyways.

libby you are so right! dogs need so much sleep and being surrounded by other strange dogs will just make them more nervous, or even if they do play a lot then it ends up over-exhausting them. this makes for higher levels in stress hormones which causes them to be skittish or aggressive. personally, i recommend having someone over to be company to the dog or hiring a professional dog sitter if the dog needs to be walked. (of course that is only possible when you have already trained your dog and its familiar with visits/ will cooperate with strangers) but first and foremost, people NEED to do thorough research on the animal that they want to house. people need to realize it is nothing but IRRESPONSIBLE to take in an animal without proper education on the subject.
@_catburglar
@_catburglar 4 года назад
@@7thCobweb Very true! Most people would drop their dogs off while they're at work so the dogs would be there for at least 8 hours. That sounds great to the owners but it's just way too long for any dog no matter how active they are. I unfortunately saw this every day. One of the most common breeds in day care was the German Shepherd and they were all exceptionally misbehaved, even with their owners. Nearly all the dogs that came there were misbehaved but the German Shepherds especially stood out. It's maddening how people adopt these high energy working breeds with no knowledge on them and no willpower to train them, they hear all these positive descriptions on the breed and think that's what their dog is going to be like without considering all the work that goes along with it.
@sneekz07
@sneekz07 4 года назад
It depends where you send them. If you send them to a day care that is just a massive room with 10's of dogs then I agree. My dog goes to a doggie daycare where she only takes 3 dogs total and that's including her own dog.
@crosita1
@crosita1 4 года назад
This really varies a lot between daycares. The one I used to go to I liked because there was always a human in with the dogs, they had a way to separate out a dog who was uncomfortable, and they always did a trial with a new dog to make sure s/he didn't have any conflicts with the existing group before taking them on for a longer term. I quizzed about how they dealt with conflicts or unwanted behavior, how they fed out the snacks they offered (took each dog out separately to eat and then put them back), etc. Unfortunately they started insisting on slip leads to prevent escapes and then required that the dog be dropped off before a certain time of day so I stopped going. But there are daycares that can be very good for a friendly social dog. I have also seen places that have a webcam going where you can look in in your dog any time. That would be a great way to make sure the dog is comfortable. You could make a wonderful employee of a better class of doggy daycare, so keep an eye open!

I can't speak for all daycares but the dogs at the one I work at really love it. It's not for every dog such as cooper, but daycare can be a very rewarding experience for the right dog.

Wish I had such a terrific dog community here where I live! People here never pick up their dog's poop. They think that training a dog is like getting them lobotomized, and if they do 'train' them, they treat them like kids, as if they were capable to understand cause-effect correlation, and therefore punishing them with fear and pain. I always have to take the bus in order to get to my former neighborhood and find play mates, but here? Oh no, they are all aggressive. By the way, these are the best dog owners in this series. Kudos.

probably the best owners in the show. They truly love and care about their dogs, they feel for their dogs, were never cruel to them to discipline them. They recognise their dogs' anxiety and try to find them a space where they will feel comfortable, and were heartbroken when Victoria told them their dog was still anxious. These owners truly deserve their dogs. I'm happy to see it.

So impressed with the owners and their dedication and love. But I’m even more impressed with the dog community where they live, they aren’t ostracising cooper or the owners but are right there the entire process and doing their all to help out. Usually you see people become very antagonist towards “bad owners” and label the dog and owners rather than try to be helpful and understanding. This warms my heart.

I really wish all of the owners Victoria has to deal with were more like these two. Most of the owners cause root issues that should be a no brainer when it comes to knowing you should be avoiding them. These two actually did something that I think most can say is a bit less obvious of a mistake.

Love Victoria! This is a huge problem at doggy daycares. I work at one and there are so many owners who think bringing their dog in will fix their aggression/anxiety but the dogs hate it and sit in the corner drooling freaking out and not letting any dogs near them (it's a fight waiting to happen). And daycares promote this as helping too. 😩sadly I'm not allowed to tell the owners I hope Victoria's video helps more owners realize this isn't a good option/their dogs aren't as happy as they seem to think!

My old dog Pepper was similar. Too many dogs (mostly male) in the neighborhood would meet her and try and mount her. She was fixed and she would interact well at first, but did not tolerate other dogs trying to demonstrate superiority versus playing. Despite all our efforts to help her get over the dog=no fun stereotype, they all played or interacted in a way she was not interested in doing. So she was similar to Cooper but without any pet siblings. Other than that she was a great dog and beloved. It's nice to see these owners not be really ignorant or uncaring, just uninformed. I would like to see the rest of this video some time in the future.

"the question about how to handle the reinforcements with the treats really impressed me." Same here, it showed again how responsible and thoughtful they are. I really like this couple and for once I was sure they'd keep up the good work and success (with some other dog owners on the show I really wasn't so confident). Because they weren't simply about stopping bad behavior, but about the dog's happiness and well-being, and really learning how to manage that. All signs of great pet owners.
