Honestly The only thing upsetting me about this season is the amount of screen time they dedicate to just.. sex. We don’t need a montage of every character having sex, it’s taking away from a lot of the dark and very real issues and just sexualizing and almost glamorizing it tbh. We shouldn’t think Cassie and Nate hooking up is hot.. he’s a sociopathic narcissist, emotionally love bombing a codependent victim. We should see more of how Nates abusive tactics are causing her to spiral (which we are finally getting more of) but it still feels more like a struggling love story than a toxic dynamic. Like I can’t be the only one who thinks its weird how much this season is revolving around Cassie, feels almost like they’re exploiting the actress and her body at times with how much they make this girl take her t!ts out. Just my unpopular opinion.

I appreciate Noel finally addressing this: they’re teenagers. I see a lot of people on Twitter discuss how stupid and mean the characters on the show are. They’re teenagers, they’re capable of being horrible and make stupid decisions. For example, I see everyone on Twitter talking about how Cassie is stupid for falling for Nate despite him being a genuinely awful person and being her best friend’s ex-boyfriend but that’s almost every teenage girl that I knew back in high school, myself included. When I was in high school, I went through something similar where I wanted this one guy to love me so bad and I changed a lot for him and even changed my morals and viewpoints just to appease him, even though he was such an asshole towards me. I related to Cassie in wanting someone to love you so bad that you could change yourself in order for them to even look your way. So, of course it’s frustrating to look at because we’re molder and we know better now. So, glad that Noel pointed that out!

I agree. After watching the show I realized other people saw the show differently. there are people being fans to the characters or hating them like you said. But there were far more deeper backstories to it than labeling who is good or bad. Ans also same with changeling yourself for someone else. Just happens when you don't have a good self esteem. Not always from a lack of a father just a lack of good parenting. Someone to tell you your worth more than just looks or anything else. And that your enough as you are. Her mom literally only boasted her for that. So why would she have a personality if thats all she thinks isnt important

Does anyone feel like basically nothing has happened in the few most recent episodes? There's really only two storylines right now; rue's storyline and cassie's storyline, and it feels like neither have really developed much at all. It feels like theres so much focus being put on the 'feeling' of the show, that it's losing any actual substance or plot development. Nothing is cohesive, theres no flowing story line that ties the characters together. It's incredibly disorienting. What really gets to me is how poorly the characters are being fleshed out. What do they all do? Are they still in school at this point? What are their goals? Who is Dominic Fike supposed to even be, other than a plot device? What happened to all the other side characters?

I get that 100%, I’m actually in high school, and am at a point in my life where I have to come to terms with my mental issues, something I never knew I needed to deal with, but lately, specially, I’ve found it hard to watch shows that depict the issues that I have, especially when they’re represented perfectly. I was actually considering watching this show, but when everyone started talking about that aspect of it, it’s kinda turned me off to it. I get it’s great to feel seen and represented, and I feel like a completely different person, so maybe it’s just me, but can I ask why you, or maybe other people, like seeing these issues in shows and movies? I’m really interested, I hope this isn’t too personal, but does it help?

As someone who’s grown up with a few interactions with pot, but no hardcore drugs, I do advise people to be careful watching this show. While it doesn’t romanticize hardcore addiction it doesn’t always shy away from it.
@anna_banana414
@anna_banana414 2 года назад
i feel like it definitely does romanticize addiction to an extent. coming from someone who grew up around hard core drugs in my family, i agree with you though. but there are def times when it’s putting a light on these drugs, and at times it makes it seem like “ooh, that looks fun, and maybe it would help me in some way, i might try it” but then it almost immediately switches over to the bad part of drugs. the part that ruins lives and relationships, and makes you change your mind about your previous thoughts. i like that it shows both parts though, because it really does give an insight to what being an addict is actually like, and how it ruins so much.

@anna_banana414
@anna_banana414 2 года назад
@@jcon2060 yea for sure, but it also shows the “fun” in drugs, which is then immediately followed by the bad. like for instance, when i first started watching it and they were doing whatever drug it was that they did in the scene with rue and Jules in the funky glitter fort, i was like “oh that looks cool as shit” and im sure that can make some people think that they’d wanna do something like that. which is why i said i feel as if it does romanticize. but immediately after in the episodes, it went into rues OD and her sister finding her pretty much dead, and her being in a coma, etc. all the bad stuff that immediately changes your perspective of the previous enticing scenes. thats where the main moral comes in. it’s like saying “yea drugs look cool and all and might relieve some pain, but it will be doing much more harm then good eventually.”

@@anna_banana414 Thanks a lot for your insightful breakdown. I understand exactly what you mean now - especially since I haven't watched the show. *A Requiem for a Dream* left a deep impact in me as a teenager and more than a decade later, I still think about it now and then. Maybe Euphoria instills a sense of the glamour as well as the horrifying reality of drug abuse and imo, that does more for the youngsters than the DARE org.
@sadezem991
@sadezem991 2 года назад
Listen, I'm a fentanyl addict who has been doing drugs since I was 14. I relate a lot to Euphoria and the complexity of being a mentally ill teenage girl. How good people can do shitty things. I think it shows all of the shitty, horrible parts of addiction and doesn't romanticize it. It shows how selfish and manipulative it makes you, how you push everyone you love away. I also think Cassie's dad's story is so realistic and sad. I think people see it and assume all of the girls are on drugs and it's just pretty girls doing drugs without facing consequences but that's not it. It's beautifully directed and composed, but it's really not unrealistic.

I don’t like how the writers handle certain insufferable characters sometimes but I can acknowledge that teenagers can be quite complex at times… but at the same time I can’t help but notice that this show is aimed more for Mature audiences while younger audiences, typically under the age of 18, enjoy watching this show because they find it relatable. I’m not saying media automatically nudges someone to do self harming acts, but the way it’s presented reminds me a little too much of 13 reasons why and leaves me with a bad taste in my mouth… however some people view what they do in the show and their characters as well as the cinematography to be artistic but that in itself is a subjective argument. However, some characters can be quite entertaining at times because it’s clear the actors themselves resonate with the people that they are playing.

Yeah. Also in my opinion in this day and age pressure to like shit that everyone does is at an all time high, because it is low risk and easy access. Euphoria on so many levels is mediocre at best but for various reasons people champion it and call it groundbreaking, when objectively it is not at all. Media and it’s consumption is a skill and tv is developed like candy these days, people don’t actually learn to critique these shows. That’s not how it’s written tho. Why do you think the teenagers make the bad decisions? It’s not forced flaws when the bad decisions that were made, make sense with the world they’re in. Bottom line is; it’s nuanced. If you want insight, go watch Dr K’s Euphoria review. I just don’t see what satisfaction you get by dismissing things just because the characters were teenagers. honestly season 2 didn’t offer us much closure on the big plot points in season 1 and the characters are not evolving.i understand that there needs to be conflict for the show to go on, but the fact that everyone is still dealing with similar issues from s1 is kind of redundant... (spoilers ahead) in the final episode of last season, we were all wondering: what will happen after rue overdoses a second time? what will happen between rue and jules? they brush over the fact that rue overdoses a SECOND TIME like why is she not in rehab again? wouldn’t she be in a much more strict, controlled and professional facility? then, rue and jules just get back together like jules leaving wasn’t a big deal…. (they brush over it quickly at the party in ep 1 but that’s it…) also, the writers forget jules’ fear of rue would relapsing without her AND RUE *ACTUALLY* DOES AND JULES FEELS TERRIBLE… BUT THEN THEY KISS AND ARE “BACK TOGETHER”, as if everything was ok?? also why does no one tell maddy “don’t go back to nate BECAUSE HE CHOKED YOU AND HES AN ABUSER(like they’re just like “oh maddy, you deserve better” and no one stresses the toxicity and DANGER of their past relationship) like in s1, there was a WHOLE POLICE INVESTIGATION. IT WAS SERIOUS. idk it feels like season 2 is not a continuation of season 1. again, it’s still early but i hope we get more s1 closure….

What I really liked about Euphoria was how well they showed each side to every story. We learn why Rue is attracted to her addiction, she wants the silence, the calm. It shows how someone could gravitate towards substance abuse. However, it isn’t subtle in the way it depicts her relapses and the darkness that comes with addiction. Euphoria was truthful even if a bit dramatic, and that’s a rare thing given that most of the time drugs and alcohol are either demonized by the media, or glorified in music and tv. Euphoria does a good job of displaying the entire picture of a situation not just what people want to see.
@orchardjpg
@orchardjpg 2 года назад
I personally think the way that euphoria is stylized is purely for the artistic part. It’s another world it’s not very relatable in that sense we don’t even know what city or state they live in! So it’s meant to focus a lot on the emotion behind those moments that these characters find themselves in and I think it’s smart because it’s like an internal yet romanticized view of the ugly reality they’re all facing and that’s how they’re coping with it all. Rue is the narrator so I’d like to believe this is all from her internal perspective, but of course this is just my take from your comment on it. But overall I do agree the aesthetic importance over the delicate delivery of a very bleak issue is truly overshadowing and almost a tad dismissive of the very real and devastating reality many teenagers do face.

I usually think the same thing when a show does their take on complex issues but as someone who got diagnosed with bipolar at a very young age. In the first ep. when Rue was having a panic attack in the classroom it was a very accurate depiction and I immediately got deja vu. Also other traits like the depression lows when she's laying in bed spamming trash tv and generally not wanting to be around anyone vs. next day manic highs where she's so elated with life and everyone around her. I'm not a teenager at all but it makes me happy to see accurate representation of bipolar rather than the usual sensationalization. I honestly believe that this isn't a problem. I think if the characters in a show are intended to make bad decisions and written like they should make bad decisions then it shows good writing. If characters are supposed to be good people and make dumb/bad decisions that are portraied as them doing a good thing that shows bad writing (see the flash from like season 4 on) And also, Ali, Rues lil sis and mom are characters I'd like to see flashed out. I think the show in general is good, with some small issues that are mainly pacing and/or unpredictability (the last thing isn't actually bad it's just annoying as fuck). it's sam levinson. there is no process. just an ex junkie who had nepotism ties and good actors available. also he's a creep and people don't seem to get that you can be a creep and a male and have everyone still think the world of you in that industry to this day. eventually folks put it together. besides the show is just trauma porn at this point. and i already had a good trauma show for my adolescence. and SKINS first two seasons were silly and melodramatic but i can actually call it a cohesive body of work COMAPARITIVELY and WAY less creepy. and that had like a tenth of the euphoria budget. soooooooooooo dunno

The idea that Euphoria is romantisizing drug use and causing teenagers to want to do drugs themselves is ridiculous. The teenagers who wanna snort crushed up benadryl off a toilet rim and drink till they black out have already done so. The show isn't gonna be the tipping point.

@happy baby they absolutely do romanticize drug use in the show lol. WoOooO they show her overdosed once. They never show her withdrawling and experiencing the tremendous anxiety and pain--leading to desperation to get more. She somehow aquires them all the time with no job? stole from her mom once lol. Read around the internet and see how many of these kids want to be rue. They don't show even a fraction of the pain/struggle that addiction brings. Instead it's all confetti and bright lights and threesomes lmfao. showing her overdose once and argue a little with her family is nowhere near enough when 90% of the show is rue talking about how incredible she feels--and the rest is mild little problems in comparison to the real deal.

I actually am really enjoying season 2 so far. This show surprisingly I can relate to a lot. Many people think it’s over exaggerated and I can admit at some points yes. But this just shows how different everyone’s lives are. Many people do experience one or two things in this show and some a majority of the things that occur. I especially like how they showed Rues struggle with relapse. This is how addicts really do act and sometimes a lot lot worse. I’m glad they’re showing teens and adults how damaging it can be for not only the addict but the family and loved ones as well.

I mean yes and no because messed up stuff do happen to teenagers. Also I don't think it's necessarily teengaers being dramatic and exaggerating when they are experiencing new and confusing and even painful things for the first time. I think in hindsight and as adults it seems exaggerated and dramatic because we have been through it an dnow how to deal with it now. But when you are a teenager in those moments it is real and affecting you in a real way. I just think some older people as usual become unsympathetic and dismisive because they've been through it and now that they are for some of them safe and survived those experiences the memories of the experience seems not so bad or unimportant.

As someone who's fallen very deeply into drug abuse in the past I finished euphoria feeling like they missed the mark. There are way too many forced situations with drugs. Like idk I get it's a show and unrealistic but Bojack horseman for example always had me relating watching him spiral out of control. Euphoria is trying without actually putting in the work to show the more selfish side of drug abuse, without showing the rest of the problems that come with it. I like the show but I'm just pointing out that the parts that it wants someone like me to relate to either miss the mark or stick to only showing the really small digestible bits and I'd like just a little bit more. I'm still gonna enjoy the show tho regardless.

I really enjoyed season 1 as well, I think people overlook how well the show explores the driving force of gender in the characters lives. With Jules and Nate especially it's really interesting to see the ways gender and sexuality drive both of their development and childhood trauma and influence their behaviour now. I also think the look at depression and addiction we get with Rue is very valuable. I feel represented in terms of the way they've shown depression completely shapes your understanding of reality. And I have so much empathy and care for Rue as she struggles through addiction, it really showed me how thin of a line any of us are away from using drugs to cope with life.

euphoria's timeline is difficult to follow at times but i think it's also due to rue being the one narrating everything that's happening in the show. these are recollections of rues life and situations that she found out about from the people around her. how everything is smushed together and seems like all of these events are happening in one week - it accurately depicts rue's flawed concept of time due to her battle with addiction & mental illness.

Man, I loved how season one was raw and upfront to a fault talking about mental illness. And I really appreciated that, considering teen shows/movies tend to be awfully patronizing about these themes. And I cherished that and was thankful for it cause I saw myself in there many times… but that was 2019, I was better. Through the pandemic my mental health really deteriorated and right now I don’t know if seeing something like Euphoria would affect me in a bad way. But this season is shot on film and the cinephile that wasn’t completely pulverized by isolation still lives in me and craves that shit, haha. Anyone reading this has had a similar experience with mental illness and watching feel-bad stories? I loved that shit pre-mental breakdown. Right now I can’t stand it. It’s painful.

It still is tho. Think about it.. Cassie is going through day after day trying to impress a boy who really dosent care about her, ik alot of ppl wont admit it but i know alot of girls and even guys who have done what cassie dose (not as exessive ofc) just to get a 2 second look as them and their crush pass in the hallway. Kat is not only struggling with body positivity but also sex in general. Shes confused on why she dosent want a guy who is so perfect, mewhile dreaming of some sex warrior. Ik alot of girls who say that in highschool they were told they arent suppose to think ab sex, that girls arent supposed to have sex or whatever but they want to, and they think ab it often, so some people can relate to her. Nate is just an asshole but hes also struggling with sex, his sexuality, and seeing what his father dose to kids and now being hyperseual because of it , and how his father acts towards him in general. I feel like all nates problems are pretty self explanitory and even if alot of people dont realte to him as a whole, they probably relate with some small aspect of him and his charachter. The list just goes on, but yea id say the show is still very relatable, its just also wildly exaggerated because it is a tv show ofc.

Fr though, Thank you for giving Euphoria a fair shot. It's so weird to me how much people freak out about how "extreme" and unrealistic it is and don't give it a chance. Cause first off, other than the obviously more explicit visuals, the storylines aren't that crazier than Degrassi, Skins, or even shows like Pretty Little Liars as far as violence. And I personally find the show very relatable to the high school I grew up in, and many others. Me and my friends, kids in my town, and people I meet today who tell me about their childhood went through some truly dark shit as millennials. I think seeing it so explicit on screen makes people uncomfortable, but that doesn't automatically mean it's not realistic. I especially remember how helpless I felt to the things that were going on around me as a kid because nobody was really paying attention to us. We were the spoiled, entitled, millennial generation and that was it. Before social media and social justice and all that stuff really kicked OFF off the way it has now, we were fighting for our fucking lives navigating all kinds of fucked up shit that even we didn't understand the true impact of until we got older. For that I think the show is actually pretty great. And I think we have a tendency to really shy away from wanting to see the ugly truth about some young people's lives, but I can attest to the fact that when we don't talk about it and we shy away from it and we say "this is too explicit I don't want to talk about it", instead of allowing a show like this to open our eyes and use it as a tool to start having conversations with our kids, it does A huge disservice to generation of young people who are crying out for help. That's what I think people should give the show a chance.
