I think what you said about seeing Rue’s addiction drag on is so spot on. Coming from someone who has seen someone in my family deal with addiction, it’s exactly what it feels like. Like a thread that keeps being pulled and then for a second you think they finally got it, their gonna be okay. Then they relapse, they yell at you, say awful things but you still love them. It’s this long painful journey that you hope ends in recovery, but as much you want to save them you can’t they have to make that decision themselves. Honestly watching Rue was kind of the catharsis that I needed.

first of all sorry to hear that, lots of strength to you~ i also felt the same about this. especially episode 5 was insane. this switching between those different modes from being aggressive, accusing everyone, crying. it was just 10 minutes or so but i feel like this is one of the most accurate portrayels, especially on an emotional level. i was very impressed with all the actors pulling that off and to everyone who wants to know how living with an addict is like this shows it pretty well, except its not just some minutes of a show where you can turn it off

I got the same sort of catharsis but I'm an alcoholic/addict myself (no hard drugs, just alcohol) and to see addiction so accurately portrayed and in such a well-rounded manner, showing the good and the bad all at once, made me feel incredibly seen and represented. From the beginning I knew Rue was going to be my favorite character because I saw myself in her. Euphoria is such an amazing show and it sucks that people with no comprehension or analysis skills write it off in dumb ways.
@Savannah-

Exactly! I was actually shocked at how realistically they portrayed it all, I don't think I've ever seen it done so honestly. I've watched a family member do this on repeat their whole lives. It's brutal, they're mean and hurtful and steal, and you want them to get better but you can't do anything for them until they figure it out. It's hard to know what's going on in their heads and why they're doing it. I'm glad they didn't hold back. Some people said they were glamorizing drug use, but I think this is actually the best deterrent I've ever watched. And it's all true.

I think the entire play was suppose to be kinda meta, like how Rue always looks right into the camera to communicate directly to us (the viewers). or when Cassie is on stage and says "Is this part of the play now?" and Yeah, everything was part of the play. The entire show was part of the play, and the characters were able to watch it and reflect on their lives and actions which then dictated what they did next. It was a really interesting and hard artistic liberty for Euphoria to take and they pulled it off really fucking well.

The problem with this season was that it started strong & ended weak. Also, there were ICONIC moments like rue & jules recreating art, the first episode of the play, the episode where rue runs across the city in the middle of a bender. i don’t think it started strong, one of the weakest episodes of this season in my opinion was episode 3. while i was watching that episode, i was literally about to stop watching the whole thing. the only good scene in that whole episode was when cal was in fezco’s house and they were talking about jules or should i say “jule”. i wish most of the scenes in this season were like that. it was entertaining and added well to the story line and was super funny. everything else in that episode was just filler after filler. 70 percent of this whole season was filler. i just wish there was a more organized and well thought out plot line. they could have built Nate’s storyline with the tapes soo much better. in the end when he turned his father in, it just didn’t feel as important because they didn’t lead up to it. this season had so much potential but it was just all over the place.

The cinematography and superb acting are this show's saving grace. The dialogue can be downright cringy, but the actors are all so good they make it believable. The story is inconsistent but when its good it's really good. The finale was mostly trash though. I hate that it ended with 27 story lines left unresolved, yet the last shot was Rue walking slowly into the sunset with her voice over telling us what she did for the rest of the year. Yes, yes, yes exactly! Her special episode was soo good, it gave so much depth to her character but also left a lot open for the next season. And then we just didn't get much more.... Her backstory with her also drug addict mom and the fact that she actually truly fell in love with Rue (something I was not convinced of in season 1 tbh) and her journey with her gender identity of course... it was all so important to understand her better, I fucking loved it! It almost makes me not even that mad at her story arc in season 2 bc I feel like I still understand her in some way but it just makes me even more furious at how most of the other characters didn't get that added context. Most behavior just did not make sense to me, especially Cassie. I kept hoping for some explaination but it was just "Nah, she's the same person with the same backstory from season 1, it just now suddenly turned into this".

BUT (!) NEWS FLASH: SHE IS BORING! Her tics and mannerisms and noncommittal approach towards everyone and everything is the same: predictable, self-pitying, and "all in"... until she's not. She loved Rue, but didn't want the responsibility of being Rue's anchor. Fair enough. But then you sleep with Elliot and rat out Rue (for her own good, of course, never once thinking "where did this enormous stash cone from and who paid for it?" WHAT? I think her selfishness rivals Cassie's, and how many idiotic butterfly eyelash extensions and the whining pitch of her voice could we take. The "gender-neutral" mania (along with the "body positivity"- morbid obesity is SEXY!) moments are over, and the lag that Covid caused washed those hot topics away. I'm a 60yo Homo and I've been an equal rights, healthcare-for-all activist for47 years. And the fights we fought (physical safety from hate-filled patriarchy and HIV, the Luvbug that loves you to death. Compared to Pronoun Preferences and Plus-Size Model Inclusivity (within an industry that despises them), these subjects didn't hold much interest. Jules is as toxic for Rue as any other character on the show. When the "moment of truth" with Rue arrived, where did she go? The writers follow algorithms like everything else, and interest waned when she left Rue at the train station. Personally, if I hear her whisper-choke "I'm s...s...sorry" one more time, I might throw a Baccarat cocktail glass at the screen.

Just because y’all don’t like Cassie doesn’t mean she doesn’t have very clear and well written motivations. She craves attention and love because she was abandoned by her father. Her father chose drugs over her and this season showed her decent into an abusive relationship that was very plausible in my opinion. She only ever got this perceived “love” from how she physically looked to men. She changes her appearance so Nate would “love” her but she is eventually isolated and ends up alone. Her friends drop her and her family drops her to the point where she’s moves in with Nate. Her insecurities stem from her mother’s invalidation so she is easily molded into something she thinks Nate desires. She snaps at rue because she has had to deal with the trauma of both of her parents suffering from addiction. Definitely a lot of complexity with her competing with Maddy as she thinks Maddy has this confidence and receives love that she doesn’t know how to achieve. Cassies story this season is great and isn’t her just doing things for the sake of being crazy. Jules, Elliot, and Kats story were wack this season though. They had nothing to do which suck because Jules special episode is one of the best of the series.

Agree with a lot of what was said here. A lot of the time jumps forward and backward were so clunky writing wise, it was hard to stay in it. The moment of Lexi and Rue on the couch seemed like it occurred after the play and then all of the sudden it’s a scene in the play. There’s a giant fight scene - you see Cassie’s head smashed against a brick wall and then you don’t see what happens after that for like another 20 minutes into the show?? You can’t really be present with a character when you’re questioning in the back of your mind “what the hell happened with this other character?” “wait where in the timeline did this happen?” etc. i don’t think audiences need to be spoon fed and I understand the need to build suspense but like you said the show really draws out everything and only certain storylines and characters got the pay off that was worthy of how damn long it was drawn out. Ashtray’s arc had insane payoff, where as the main plot (behind Rue’s) between Cassie and Maddie was tied up with a quick two line scene that didn’t feel fitting for what had just happened between them. We also only get a couple lines from Rue saying “I stayed clean through the end of the school year” which was so jarring because again everything gets drawn out.

Trying to convince myself that something had to happen on set that threw off Sams writing. Theres no way he wouldve disregarded every character like that and added so many filler scenes. Most of the season seemed like scenes that would have been cut out before the final release. Too many storylines were introduced with absolutely zero development or- at the least- focus on those storylines (kat/ethan relationship, rue/jules/elliot love triangle, jules reassessing her gender identity/ loving nate bc she met him online before knowing him irl, Kats ED relapse, even fexis relationship which could have been included through out all the episodes to make us more hooked on their relationship rather than packing their whole romantic history into two episodes). I feel like i could summarize this season in 3 minutes to someone who hasnt watched it. Not to mention the fact that the season was supposed to be extremely triggering and harrowing, but there were barely any relatable scenes throughout the series. I feel like thats what made season one good, because every character had a storyline that at least one person out there could relate to.

I like that the show blurs the lines between something thats super grounded and realistic and something a bit more symbolic and creative. The mix of having the main cast on stage for scenes during the play and hiding cuts between on stage and flashbacks was so entertaining to watch. Super ambitious as a tv show and I think for what they tried to do you have to commend them for it. Even if it lacked in some parts
@fancythisgirl3

Yes!!! A lot of people take the show for face value when there actually is meaning behind certain scenes/dialogue. I also think some of the interpretations are completely out there. That being said, I think episodes, like the ones with the play, were seen as more beautiful, explicit, long, and “high budget” because Rue was sober while watching. She was watching it through her own interpretation and seeing things clearly for the first time-especially with flashbacks happening between play scenes and the repetitive funeral scenes. I think Lexi was painting her a picture and she was slowly remembering events that were happening. I think there’s a bit more to it, grounded and fantastical, but felt like that’s what they were trying to portray.
@prettymurch426

Yeah, I also love how Rue sort of travels between realms when she uses. Like for example when that “I’m Tired” montage of the church when she was using heroin really highlights how she feels when she uses. Very symbolic and I think the shows cast and creators lean into that. That’s why this show is such a good fucking show

Music: astounding. Labrinth somehow composed music that conveys the emotion in the scenes incredibly, even during some of the weirder scenes where the score would need to be very specific. “Nate growing up” is all over the place, but it works, and i find myself listening to it outside of the show casually. Acting: incredible. Some of the best acting I’ve seen recently. Sydney, Alexa, Zendaya and Hunter are so good at showing how their characters are feeling, and Angus is just superb in all of his scenes. Writing: mid but the acting makes it better than it is Storyline: very good for some characters (like Rues path to getting clean, relapsing etc, ashtray and Fez were written really well and Cal’s story were well written imo) however some kind of lacked and felt rushed (like how we were only introduced to the idea of Lexi’s playwriting in the second season, and had no clue during the first season or first few episodes of s2, and Kat was well written for S1, but was near enough completely ignored for s2). I would’ve liked to see more on ashtrays story, and more on Kat in s2 since her story was one of the more important ones in terms of promoting a message and her character shift from shy to confident is inspiring in a way. The show is exaggerated (obviously, duh) but it still has a realistic feel to it. I’ve struggled with some of the things in this show firsthand, and they are portrayed very accurately to the point where I’m almost believing it’s real. I always use Rues breakdown scene as an example, when her mother takes the suitcase, and she gets angry at Elliot, Rue and her mother. That scene was so gut wrenching and raw, it was hard to watch but I wanted to see more. Not many shows have that effect on me, but this one did multiple times throughout both seasons. Overall, I love this show for what it is. 9/10. If only the writing was better, and some storylines were explored deeper.

Season one was better, in my opinion. I would have loved it if they kept a theme like last season. Season 1 had glittery makeup and dazzling purples. It felt like a party or night club. The first episode of season 2 had this slightly gangster western vibe that was abandoned except for a few instances (Cassie dressing like Oklahoma, Fez wanting a farm, and a couple of songs on the soundtrack). Other than that, Rue's drug addiction was told really well and the school play was awesome. But other characters completely lost their plot lines.

Euphoria is made for an era when post-episode social media engagement is a metric studios really value. The overall story arc barely present, and for most fans, that's okay. As long as "damn that was crazy" moments happen, viewers love it.

When Sam Levinson covers addiction I think he nails it…anywhere outside of that can quickly turn to a level of pretension that physically hurts me when I watch it. Not all the time but it’s so apparent I can’t ignore it. A lot of the cinematography style is from the 60s and 70s and heavily influenced by Scorsese films for sure
@lemalopez3850
@lemalopez3850 2 года назад
I agree. I feel like the only thing they did right this season was Rue's plot line/story. I like how this season we got to see the true nature of addiction and the effects it has on that person's family. I feel like in season 1, they sort of "glorified" addiction especially in the scene where Rue and Jules get high together (the glitter scene). It was a beautiful scene in terms of the cinematography, like sheesh it made me want to get high too if I could feel that way too. I don't know if glorify is the right word, but I can't think of a better word. And also I feel like in season 1, we felt empathetic towards Rue after learning about her OCD, anxiety and her dad. But then in season 2, Rue started to piss us off with the way she was treating her loved ones, especially in the intervention scene and what she told Ali. Ultimately, the way Rue's story was written was beautifully done because it really showed the true nature of addiction, even if some bits were exaggerated. I think he really nailed addiction and Rue's story but he screwed up the rest.

Sam levinson was actually addicted to drugs when he was a teenager and it took him years to get clean, which makes sense as to why addiction is portrayed so well In the show. But he seriously needs more writers because at some parts of the show it just gets so messy and doesn’t make sense to the story line.
@MorgonBranning
@MorgonBranning 2 года назад
@@lemalopez3850 They didn't glorify at all. Even in season 1, from the beginning Rue states that drugs are awesome (because they are, you need to be honest about that; chemically drugs literally tell your brain "this is awesome" and floods it with dopamine and other feel-good chemicals) but that there's a very very narrow window of "awesome" until it becomes horrible and destructive. This is the only show I've ever seen to so accurately depict addiction and mental illness and I felt so seen. The thing you mentioned about empathy is you're not a person with true empathy if you can only empathize when you see the person as a victim and not when you see the way their trauma, mental illness, and addiction affects them and the people around them. Addiction is not a result of lack of morals or poor character; it is a disease that follows you around forever, is doomed to relapse, is doomed to get worse, is incurable, and is ultimately fatal. The way addiction physically changes your brain makes addicts act the way Rue has acted -- she's not a bad person, she's sick. It's natural to want to be angry at Rue but that anger doesn't last for long when you have a true education surrounding addiction and actual true empathy and compassion. As a recovering alcoholic, I was never quite "pissed off" at Rue, but extremely empathetic and I felt for her so deeply as though she were myself. The things that addiction cause a person to do are tragic and unfortunate, but it's the disease of addiction I hate, not the addict. Never the addict. Nobody chooses to live that way. Anyway, Euphoria is the best show I've seen in a very long time and will always hold a special place in my heart.
@MorgonBranning
@MorgonBranning 2 года назад
@@lemalopez3850 Being open and honest about drugs is more effective at educating people and leading them to make more conscious and responsible decisions about drugs, whether that's abstinence or moderation, and lying and saying drugs are just completely bad has been proven for decades to be ineffective because people can see through the lie and would prefer to find out the answer themselves (specifically, the DARE program has always been guilty of this and actually made addiction rates worse). Drugs feel amazing in general, but without doing them in moderation you quickly open up a dangerous door that leads to pain and destruction. The same thing applies to alcohol (which is also a drug). I think a lot of people who are mad about the nonexistent "glorification of drug abuse" are ACTUALLY just angry that the show convinced them to understand and empathize with an addict by dragging them along with her through her journey. And people who are dishonest about drugs and addiction tend to want to completely demonize drugs and addicts, which is just ignorant and wrong.

i totally agree! It was so unprovoked, too, like - I know it must be really difficult for lexi growing up in the shadow of her 'hot' sister, but that's not cassie's fault. Cassie's done nothing to Lexi, aside from maybe being a little bitchy during that week she was having a complete mental breakdown. The fact that everyone (and even the show itself) seems to be portraying Lexi's play as an empowering 'slay!' moment that was for the best blows my mind.

I don't remember where I heard this from, but a film professor explained why you see shows like Euphoria set in highscool rather than college. Nearly everyone has a high school(TM) experience, the same can't be said for college. Not everyone is lucky enough to go to college, and there isnt really a college experience (TM) for those who do, not like there is a highschool one. Since almost everyone goes to highschool, a show in that setting reaches more people. Though, I personally would prefer if the setting of Euphoria was for college kids or at the very least out of high school.

It felt sweet for him to then, instead, calmly bring the cops in and force this man who helped shape him to finally face some accountability. I get that cutaways are the style of the show but there was so much going on and they kept cutting to things that didn't matter and that was extremely frustrating. Best part about the show for me is it's ability to portray the lasting effects of childhood trauma. I've never been able to relate to characters so closely (specifically Rue), solely because of the similar traumas we share. Hate to say it, but I even understand what Nate is going through; literally never thought I would ever feel an ounce of empathy for him.The show does a great job at never letting us forget what [most of] the characters have gone through and how those events have formed their decisions, unlike other shows that just give us one flashback scene in one episode. This is just like life - we never forget our traumas, they are constantly with us and we're reminded of them almost every day. Watching this season felt a lot like how Rue felt watching Lexi's play - its extremely cathartic to see your life, the good and bad, from a third person perspective. Every time I watched Rue give her eulogy, or hurt the ones she loves, I saw myself in her. Even though it is just a tv show, its been an eye-opening and introspective experience watching it. I absolutely love the show but It was never brought up, not shown again there wasn't even any metaphors/hints/symbolism (whatever its called) to it. It's like it didn't happen. I think a better reason for her behavior is because she seeks validation from men (because of her dad) Which would explain some of her spiraling behavior (which is in character- just look at the Daniel shit from s1) the real question is why did she pick Nate? That's what doesn't make since to me, and I think that's what the first comment is trying to say.
@patriece2215
@patriece2215 2 года назад
@@starfish4852 it wasn’t talked about up front but that’s the reason why she went off the deep end. Tv shows wants u to read between the lines and understand the reasoning for the characters action. Nothing on euphoria is simple and spoon fed to us. In the first episode of season 1 she had a big fight with Lexi, she was drinking too much, she broke up with McKay. And that was all before she even met up with Nate. The abortion is what led to her erratic and self sabotaging behaviors.
@starfish4852
@starfish4852 2 года назад
@@patriece2215 I guess you're right. But there really wasn't anything to "read between the lines" either. Her drinking?she always had the issue with alcohol even before the abortion (see in the Halloween episode) and it was mentioned how her family also has a problem. Maddie also says she becomes a different person when she drinks (which implies this also happens before her abortion) And the dance scene with her drunk wants because of her abortion but because of her feelings of the current situation (nate & maddie) She already had erratic and self sabotaging behavior before her abortion, and I'm sure there is some feelings that are causing her to act the was she is because of it, but I dont think it's the main one. It's seems to be more because she wants validation and her issues with drinking (which the show established has always been a thing for cassie even pre abortion) And even if it is all because of the abortion, the main question still stands of: why Nate? Now the answer is very obvious, because the writer wanted the whole nate, cassie, maddie thing- which is totally fine, it was entertaining, I just wish it happened more "naturally" And I have to add, I don't like the idea of her spiraling being solely on her abortion because that makes it seem that they're trying to send the message that if cassie hadn't gotten an abortion her life would be good in comparison to what it is now, and that's not a good message to send to a teen/young adult audience. Its Still very good show though

I agree with every single thing you said here. Although I expected a lot more from S02, I think the actors carried the scenes and acted the shit out of their storylines which made me remember a lot more moments of this season than the previous one. That said, I think that Sam Levinson didn't really plan well the development of some characters and plots from one season to another - Kat was just destroyed (I get that something happened between him and Barbie but come on, they just threw her character in the trash), Jules was barely in the season and only showed up to be a nuisance to Rue and Cassie was just... A whole lot. Although I do appreciate how much more storyline Lexi, Fez and Maddy got, they were always my favorite characters and they were more developed this season. I guess it's just bittersweet because I see good and bad sides to this season, but it does make me earn for season three a lot more.

Season 1 obviously is still dark as it deals with heavy topics but as Sam said the season 1 aesthetic was more “party at 2am” where it’s more glam and that in this season it was more 5 am where they should have gone home which I interpret it as they have to face their problems more with each other AND (this is more to do with Cassie) they finally lash out after keeping it all in and using partying, clothes, etc to burry the pain. Hopefully season 3 will answer more questions, resolve or sum sht like that

I was so young and looked up to him, he was trying to do better and came to stay with me and my family to clean up, he stayed in my room in my bunk bed, well about 2 weeks in his addiction caved in and was drinking in my room for over 2 months. Till one day he threw up and had a seizure on my top bunk while I was sleeping, that day was the realization for a 7 year old what addiction is and how bad it is. He was hiding all his bottles in my closet I never even knew until my mom found them. Fast forward to today and my uncle is still bouncing around to VA to VA not able to stay sober longer than 6 months. Yea no doubt the cinematography of the show has gotta be, for me, it’s biggest selling point. I think you hit the nail on the head with the “people who can’t relate to a single element clearly have not had to go through much in life or have not been around people who have gone through things” take; it’s the best way to describe why the show is so polarizing. It’s what made breaking bad so enticing: shockingly bleak scenes that seem to be drawn out for almost too long. But that’s what real life is! It’s one long scene, sometimes bleak sometimes not. As someone who grew up with an alcoholic mother it really does feel like this never ending bad dream at times, and scenes like Rue’s relapse felt like watching my life from outside, looking through the kitchen window.

Teenagers are extremely sexual, extremely impulsive, extremely reckless, and most of the time dealing with their own forms of extreme trauma that mold certain behaviors, diseases or disorders (addiction, eating disorders, abusive relationships, etc.) The only character I couldn't relate to was Fez because I'd never sold drugs or gone through what he has, but in regards to virtually every other character, REAL teen issues were portrayed so accurately and realistically it was refreshing to see.

The entire play was suppose to be sorta meta, like how Rue always looks right into the camera to communicate directly to us (the viewers). or when Cassie is on stage and says "Is this part of the play now?" and Yeah, everything was part of the play. The entire show was part of the play, and the characters were able to watch it and reflect on their lives and actions which then dictated what they did next. It was a really interesting and hard artistic liberty for Euphoria to take and they pulled it off really fucking well.

I will say I’ve spent a lot of time around songwriters and I loved the scene of Elliot singing, you really got to see what rue was feeling. It was very intimate, which I think it was why it was uncomfortable to watch, but I think when you watch it with the perspective of “oh shit Elliot’s still using, is he gonna be okay? Is he gonna die?” It really shows how special the moment is. He was using because he was lonely, which is pointed out a few times in the show. So while he did end up helping rue he’s still using, he’s back to “his guitar being his only friend” and he said “if I keep you here I’ll only be doing this for myself.” The one time we saw him decide not to take drugs was when he was not feeling lonely, he was hanging out with rue and Jules. But now he’s by himself again. So I personally think the scene was bittersweet and vulnerable, if they had a montage it would’ve taken the intimacy out of the scene. But I also may be over analyzing because I’m a sucker for weepy shit like that.
