Is food REALLY EXPENSIVE in Norway ? - VANLIFE NORWAY

This episode was filmed 3rd September 2022.
We wake up after our first night in Norway and head to Gratjønn for a walk through the forest along what turned out to be a skiing track!
Back on the road we encounter our first tunnel and are amazed by the network of roadways that all connect up underneath the country.
We arrive at the Canon Museum at Møvik and after a quick lunch, explore the fortress and weaponry. We have never seen anything quite like the massive canon and being able to walk around it and the ammunition silo was a fantastic experience.
Next we head over to the island of Flekkerøy for a rest before trying our first food shop in Norway at a Rema 1000.
We find a handy park up for the night and cook a delicious prawn curry.

The spaghetti and the other pasta products were gluten-free. Normally, 500g of spaghetti costs £0.9-1.5. You dont need to buy water in Norway - use tapwater - its free and actually cleaner.

When the lady said that in winter people go skiing at night and needs light, bear in mind (and this does vary quite a bit depending on your latitude), that at that place from November on, it would start getting dark from around 3.30 pm (later on earlier) and dawn won't start until 8.30 am (in mid December maybe as late as 10 am). Darkness can cover quite a large part of the day.

Yes the lights are certainly needed. It must be quite magical skiing along the tracks in the dark. 👍

As a Norwegian I would like to say that I really enjoyed watching you two exploring our country. I would like to point out that the pasta you were commenting on was in the gluten free section (glutenfri in Norwegian), pasta is quite cheap here as well.

Greetings from Australia. My son lived in Oslo for about six years, so I’m loving this series. Fresh meat and alcohol are very expensive in Norway. Many locals jump over the border to Sweden where these items are much cheaper. REMA 1000 = REMA Tusen
@LifeistooshortCK
@LifeistooshortCK Год назад
We visit Oslo on the trip 👍. Those who live close to the border have the best of both worlds
@lpdude2005
@lpdude2005 Год назад
But there is always something you need to be aware of. In Norway, the meat product does not contain fat - or water - perhaps 4- 10%. In other countries, it is normal with 29-36% fat and water and it is free and is thrown away here or becomes animal feed. Chicken is also not sprayed with salt water (this is clearly stated on the package and is often very cheap)

A very interesting point (at least I think so!) is that the “Brun Lapskaus” (21:55) is translated as Brown Lobscouse, which is why we get the name for Liverpudlians (scousers) from their version called just “Scouse”. It was a generic sailing ship stew common all over the North Sea and beyond.

I grew up near the horse race venue at 3:09, and have run up the steep path at 5:40 way too many times wearing cross-country skiis and start number on my chest in my childhood. The ski track is shaped as a figure-eight so it easily can serve 1km, 2km, 3km and 5km competitions (depending on the kids age). At 8:00 you drove past the Sørlandschips factory, and you ended up buying Maarud crisps?!? If you liked the Møvik cannon museum, you should also know that during summertime you can take a tiny ferry from Høllen to Ny-Hellesund and visit the huge fortress there. It is being restored and well worth a visit.

4:23 - It is normal to have lit up paths in the woods here in Norway. And it is as you said to make is usable for everyone year round. The Norwegian name for it is "lysløype" or literally "light path/track". During winter we go to work before the sun rises, and go home after sunset, so we need lights for everything. 😀

I think it is useful to know for non-Norwegians that grocery stores have budget brands(first price, Xtra, Prima, etc.) and they are usually good quality products in Norway. The main reason they are much cheaper is that it is little or no Ad budget for these brands, which makes them significantly cheaper to produce. The gap between the most expensive alternative and the cheapest one is bigger in Norway than in many other countries. So it's really a lot of money to be saved. Obviously your not always going to prefer the cheapest alternative, it's just mathematiclly unlikely, but choosing budget brands is a great money-saving tip for tourists in Norway.

Food can be cheap in Norway if you know where to look. Back when Covid was at its worst and work as a freelance musician was non-existent, I managed to eat quite well and healthy for less than 500 kroner (that's less than 50 pounds/euros/dollars) a month. That was a real challenge but an impossible one and quite interesting too - one of those things I'm happy to have tried once but would rather not do again. Food prices are a bit higher now though so I'm not sure if it's still possible.
@arcticblue248
@arcticblue248 Год назад
@@LifeistooshortCK Also there is an app called "too good to go" that many stores use, they sell for half price or cheaper goods that they otherwise would have to trash after the day, like fresh baguettes and such. They then advertice these on this app so people can show up and buy cheaply. This is meant to combat foodwaste.

As someone who likes history I found the museum interesting, your park up walk must help with your fitness level as going up and down adds to the burn. You were worried about sand getting into the van when you get a chance have a look at some off road mats unlike standard car mats they have a raised edge so any dust or liquid is kept in the mat not on the vehicles carpet sadly though you might struggle to find a set that fits the little red camper as my universal set is too big for my neighbours land rover but fit my 4x4 perfectly ( they are only slightly smaller than the footwell). Ken you might be able to find those heavy duty tyres you wanted

Torridal? That’s where I grew up… ☺️ We used to ride our bikes to the area where you went, to swim in a lake in the area, «Aurebekkvann»…. The path with the lights is called a «lysløype», a «light path», meant for walking and skiing at all times. There’s many of those all over Norway! The canon museum is close to where I live now… BTW, these tunnels we have so many of here took a bit of getting used to for us too. It's wonderful how clean the country is (apart from the cigarette but) considering it's difficult to find a rubbish bin. Just shows they have a different mind set. I must say it seems a very relaxing country. Talking of relaxing, 2 miles a day Ken? wow, tell you what, cut the crisp out, you could get away with a mile 🤣 Looking forward to next week 👍

Enjoyed this episode very much. I remember how tranquil I felt when I was there back in August. Don't you agree? I have not been to Rema 1000, but heard that they have good prices in comparison to other grocery shops. But beer is quite expensive in Norway. By the way: the tap water has excellent quality and can be used as drinking water. And what lovely weather you had. Thank you for sharing🙏

Hi Carol and Ken fantastic episode I too have been to the guns and to the steam train a few yes ago. We love Kristiansand area as a former scout leader from where I live, they are twined with the 4th Kristiansand Scouts and every two years, they meet up either in this country or in Norway. My son is desperate to go as he is named after a former Scout in Kristiansand. We have many friends there. Look forward to see more. Joe and Ellie

From Norway here, fairly sure those lights are for skiing. We call them "Lysløyper" or lighttrails. The trail will be prepared each winter for skii tracks and light because the sun goes down so early during winter. You can usually find them in every municipality ( kommune)

Which came first, KitKat or the Norwegian Kvikk Lunsj (Quick Lunch)? A Google search told me that KitKat was introduced on the English market in 1935, and KvikkLunsj on the Norwegian market in 1937. I was hoping it was the opposite, but being a half English/half Norwegian I can live with that 🙂 By the way, great video!

The big garbage skips aren't locked. Just the big opening is locked to stop people putting things like sofas etc in them. They have small square opening doors on the side just big enough for you to stuff a carrier bag size amount of rubbish through.

An interesting video. Many thanks. We were comparing prices last week and came to the conclusion that things were not that different in price between the UK and Norway, providing you compare sensibly and take into account the rural and urban differences. If you go into a local supermarket in rural Wales, prices are higher than urban England, for example. Perhaps the high food inflation in the UK is the reason for this.
@LifeistooshortCK
@LifeistooshortCK 11 месяцев назад
We have certainly noticed food prices in England have increased a lot since we returned from Norway.
