Great review, good understanding of battery and PD connection behavior. Battery health indicated by the tool is a predictor. In reality, it is better to have a certain amount of current every day, so I think it is better to charge and discharge a little. Especially since it has been found to be more harmful to maintain 100% charge.

Cool little test! Glad to see you delving more into the technical side of stuff a little bit. I am a little skeptical over your math on battery wear, with you suggesting something like 20% wear in 100 hours of playing like this. I feel like effective battery wear is probably more of a complicated problem that probably doesn't just happen linearly like that. Still, you definitely raise some interesting points, and there is probably some kind of potential issue there when you give up the much beefier power brick's larger overhead.
@little_tofu
@little_tofu 3 года назад
Yep, definitely agree with the non-linear wear. It's difficult to know how batteries would fade overtime, but from my experience batteries tend to wear faster as it degrades over time. Either way, I would still be rather worried if my battery is constantly charging and discharging.

Good video. I'm working on the most efficient setup for gaming on airplanes. Right now I'm using a combination of 100w power bank and 65w charger/onboard power. On my flight yesterday I got about 3 hours playing God of War on standard settings which I thought was pretty good. Using the 65w charger I randomly got framerate dips for 2-3 min at a time. I think I might buy another one of the 100w power banks and just roll with that. I fly 100k+ miles a year and have watched pretty much every movie available so being able to game on some of the longer flights has been awesome. If I have to replace the battery every so often that's worth it to me.
@ThorVeras
@ThorVeras 2 года назад
You can play with the 100w charger with the NVIDIA disable, just the integrated AMD grafics is suficient to play most demand games on 720p. On a travel trip where you want to be mobile. That is the way to go. With only the AMD you always charging and fps is constant. Most games you can reach 60fps.
@TabalugaDragon
@TabalugaDragon 3 года назад
Solution: charge the battery to 100% and then set the charge limit to 60% using the included software, you'll be able to game for quite it a while before the battery reaches 60%. Moreover, when the battery constantly switches between charging and discharging when it's around 50% is tons better than when it does the same near 100% charge.
@eraldorh
@eraldorh 2 года назад
That will destroy the battery very quickly!
@TabalugaDragon
@TabalugaDragon 2 года назад
@@eraldorh what makes you think that exactly? 1. The battery won't heat up much 2. it'll be kept in around half of it's charge which is best for it. Sure, it'll speed up degradation but not nearly as drastically as you think. I'm not suggesting to game on battery, just keeping it as an additional source of power for the GaN charger.
@eraldorh
@eraldorh 2 года назад
@@TabalugaDragon The constant discharging and charging the battery throughout its use on a charger thats not sufficient to both power the device and charge the battery is going to kill the battery very quickly. This is a known effect, he even points it out in his video and that was from just 2 hours of gaming. It will degrade the battery extremely quickly because its not staying at 60% because the charger isnt providing enough power to keep it there so you ARE gaming on the battery and it will produce heat because of the constant and very rapid charge and discharge cycles.
@TabalugaDragon
@TabalugaDragon 2 года назад
@@eraldorh well first, this isn't for 24\7 gaming, obviously, I'm sure most of the time the 300w charger would be used, so I'm not sure what you mean by "constant", because who would wanna game on 100w charger all the time, especially given subpar performance with it? Second, when the power isn't enough, the battery only helps with extra power, it doesn't put full strain in it like it would when you just game on battery(which is a terrible idea), therefore there is far less heat and cycles used. "because its not staying at 60%" depends on how you use it, it can be kept in around the middle where the sweetspot for the battery is. I've been using my phone like this for over a year(had to use it as a wifi router), it was always warm due to sharing internet and charging, but because I mostly kept it between 30 to 70% the battery still has like 85% of it's original capacity.

to solve it, you need to disable battery charging when it above 50%, while you at 100% , than you will need to burn the 50% (from the 100%) before the battery will charge again, and it should in theroy give you 6 to 8 hours at least of gaming if not more. also , asus armory create have power options(not sure if with 100W type c you can do custom setup) but if you get after burner, and set up the gpu to take around 50-60W profile + cpu on 25-30W on the armory crate , you should block the peak jumps when the games demands it
@danielr7599

USB-C charging it’s a good feature in conjunction with a usb-c monitor, that can provide power on the same cable that is used to get the signal. Questions: both usb-c ports of the G14 supports that? If you use the laptop in a wfh setup, monitor/keyboard/mouse and office apps, will a 65w usb-c power adapter suffice?

2:53 How do you explain the charge level going down when the charge rate to the battery is positive? From the previous graph its obvious that negative charge rates only occur when the battery needs to supplement the extra power needed by the system when the 100W isn't enough, so what is causing the battery level to fluctuate? The only thing I can think of is that the BMS wastes about 5W to convert the power from USB-C to the appropriate voltage to send to the battery terminals before immediately converting it again to the voltage needed by the system (which doesn't sound too unreasonably when you consider the BMS is shoveling 100W of power, so an energy conversion rate of about 5% sounds reasonable). So the BMS would be telling the system that the charge rate to the battery is about 5W higher than it actually is, in which case your charge rate graph should be shifted down by about 5W so the new negative charge rates line up properly with the corresponding decrease on battery percentage.

At 3:12 ish, where did you get your information about fluctuating power damages the battery? In everything I found, do so does not ruin a batteries lifespan. Some chargers are actually designed this way to regulate where the current goes - Either to the battery, or to the device. I guarantee you if you monitor the charging rate with the stock power brick, it will fluctuate its current to the battery as well, how much is definitely a small amount with modern day 280W power bricks.

@DdCc500
@DdCc500 2 года назад
I know this was a year ago but… 1. Type c is fine for light task. The concern in the video is graphically demanding games like Cyberpunk will fluctuate as far as when the game needs the extra cpu and or gpu power to run the game. This is when the cpu decides to allocate more power towards running the game and less towards charging the battery. In a game like this that fluctuation could draw more watts then the PD over USB C can deliver and in fact draw on your battery. 2. Same as 1. However since your charger is 65w then you could exceed that threshold a lot easier then with a 100w charger. 3. Same as 1. And 2. It’s the condition or what you are using the laptop for. 4. I don’t have the answer for this but Fast charging is not healthy for batteries anyway. Neither is 100% charging or letting the charge drop to 0%. There is a setting by asus software that allows you to limit the charge amount. (Mine is set to 80% max)

What if you disable the dGPU using the mux switch and leave the APU on? Is it possible to use the laptop like that without damaging the battery?

This means PD charging is good for only lighter tasks and not for gaming or video editing.

Hi! Does it make a difference if i use my g14 with an omnicharge ultimate? It has a dc output which can be directly connected to a laptop’s barrel charging port. And apparently the “voltage, wattage” n everything can be set to a constant flow?

Great video 😀 , i had a question , when plug in through tha power adapter (the one came with it) does the power go to the battery or straight to gpu and cpu to save battery health?

It is technically impossible to charge and discharge at the same time. A voltage is applied to the battery, but if it is higher than the electromotive force of the battery, it will be charged, and if it is lower, it will only be discharged.

if the battery is runing in the mid range it should be able to run for 8 years no problem. but if your laptop is charging and discharging in the 100-80% and 0-20% it could and probebly will suffer damage in a couple of years. cars run in the mid zone for 10+ years constantly discharging and getting charged. if your laptop got a max 80% charge settings it will save a lot of life.

I think your calculations are a bit off. It is 1000 full charge cycles, and not just charge / discharge cycles. So I don't think so it's going to cause much harm.

Hi, thanks for making this video, it's very helpful. I have a question though and I am struggling to find the answer online, so I am hoping that you may be able to help. I have a Lenovo Legion 5 laptop, capable of 100W charging. I recently bought Anker's 120W power brick from their new series 7 lineup along with a 140w USB-C cable but for some reason, my laptop is only charging at 40w (according to Lenovo's software) with this configuration. Is there anything that you suggest trying based on your experience with type-c charging on laptops? Thanks in advance :)

Hey there! Awesome video! I want to get one of these to use while at university as I have long hours and don't always have the guarantee of a charging outlet. How will this affect simple note-taking and occasional 3D-Modelling, video and photo editing? Any reply would be greatly appreciated!

Probably avoid high intensity task where possible while using this method. I don't know what system monitoring software he used for this video, but you could probably find a way to check your system utilisation and power draw while performing these tasks to see if it would work within that 100W power limit.
