The look of confusion on your face when you realized the guy was dead was so genuine I know you could not have ever heard this song before. One of my favorite George Jones songs is White lightning
You should watch the new show George and Tammy. It's really good and it will tell their whole life story. I think the 5th or 6th episode just aired comes on on Friday nights
Teresa, I grew up listening to all the greats of country music. And Geroge Jones was definitely one of the greatest story tellers of all time... God bless you George.
If was Vince Gill when he tried to sing go rest high on that mountain I LOST IT Thank God Patti Loveless was singing with him. Lord I cried n cried and then cried some more.
If one is fortunate there has been, or is, someone in our life that affects you like no other. Then, and only then, can we experience the intensity of this song.
I LOVED your reaction when you realized the guy had passed away! The song is so simple, yet so powerful. I believe that she HAD loved him at one time, and wrote him a love letter in 1962. He later underlined every “ I love you” that she had written in the letter. The song never tells why she left him. “He Stopped Loving her Today” was released in 1980, so he must’ve carried a torch for her for 18 years.
Actually he wrote the song after they had divorced but still deeply loved each other. He was a good bit older than her to start with. So he always expected to be the first to pass away from either age or alcohol and drinking addiction. The saddest part of it all is that she died long before anyone could have expected. At the age of 55 years old. So after he wrote this song. They had both remarried other people but still cared and loved each other until the end. Sadly George Jones never had a clue that she would die before him and that he would live to be 81-years-old until his passing in 2013. Heartbreaking!
I was a musician (fiddler) in Nashville for several years. One time I was outside of the Grand Ole Opry waiting to perform at the CMA Awards. I was killing time and practicing my fiddle. I finished playing a tune and behind me I heard, “Careful, son. You’re gonna hurt yourself fiddlin’ like that.” Turned around and it was George Jones! A few years later he passed away and I attended his funeral service at that same location - The Grand Ole Opry.
Mr. Boyd, your reaction is the same reaction everyone who first heard that song has. Profoundly sad song and Mr. Jones sang the hell out of it. Thanks for the memory, and yeah, I heard it when it first came out...as you say, "a long, long time ago." 😆
My mom and dad divorced in 1979. My dad never remarried. He died in 2007. He went to his grave loving my mom. It was the saddest thing I had ever witnessed watching him pine for her all those years. This was one of my dad's favorite songs. Great reaction!
My grandma died early and my grandpa never remarried despite neighbor ladies chasing him hard. He was heart broke for the rest of his life, left with young kids to raise.
Same with my Dad. My mom left him when I was 17. She would come and see him now and then. She remarried a few years later. But he never stopped loving her and never dated. He died suddenly coming out from work at age 49. It was a huge funeral. Everyone liked him. But this song always reminds me of him….
He originally didn't want to record this because he didn't think anyone would buy "that old sad song." But it turned into one of his most successful hits
It rescued his career. I thank God that I got to see him back in 2004 when he was doing his 50 years of hits tour to go along with his cd that came out. I'm pretty sure I was the youngest guy who bought tickets to go see him, as I was in college at the time, and he was amazing. Easily top 6 of my favorite artists in country music. I have a hard time knocking Hank off of the #1 spot, and then George, Merle, Willie, Waylon, and Dwight all fight back and forth in the next 5 positions.
This is considered by many to be the best country song of all time. The level of emotion and storytelling and the absolutely iconic nature of this song is unsurpassed. I have heard this song countless times and every time it still touches me. This is how country music - or music in general - is supposed to make us feel.
Personally, I think George Jones had the best voice of all time in C & W music (followed by Hank Williams & Vince Gill) and is in the top 6 male voices in 20th century music across all genres.
I used to call this song a Shakespeare tragedy in four minutes. The beginning of the song paints the story of a breakup that wasn't over anything in particular. There's no anger on her part, and he starts by saying I'll love you til I die. And he does. It is musical storytelling at its finest.
This is what music is supposed to do to us. If you don’t feel anything when you here this, something is wrong with you. I’m glad you finally found this song.
This is it man, the good stuff. This song sung by this singer is the quintessential country song above all others. George Jones had a velvet voice and controlled so well. When you’ve heard a thousand different country songs, some of them extremely good by hundreds of different singers, this one by this singer effortlessly rises to the top. Almost equally good, is another George Jones song called The Grand Tour.
I'm German. Never heard C/W before. My American husband introduced me to this kind of music. I didn't speak English, but the first song I heard was He stopped Loving her today, by George Jones. Didn't know what he was singing about, but his voice touched me deeply and brought tears to my eyes. After I understood the words, it became my favorite song. I have heard these song so many times now and every time I start sobbing. It touched my heart and soul so deeply. I will never forget the first time I heard it. This song breaks my heart. My husband is deceased now for 14 years and I never looked at another man. He was my soul mate and will be till I join him in the afterlife. Can't wait till I see him again. MrLboyed you have a beautiful sounding voice. You ought to be an announcer on the news or a talk show. Love listening to your awesome voice.
@@Joemama-km9np Thank you. Till this day, I have trouble with writing. Americans use letters you don't hear. In Germany every letter is pronounced. Take the word knife. You don't speak the k. It's silent. Why use it? Why not just write nife? Of course the e is silent too. Ich habe immer ein nettes Wochenende. Das ist Familian Tag. Meine 2 kinder und mein Enkelsohn verbringing das Wochende mit mir. Das ist immer schoen. Ich hoffe Ihr Wochenende ist auch schoen. Greetings from Texas.
@@gigih.hammer306 Haha!!! We native English-speakers often wonder the same thing about our spellings! English has "borrowed" words from other languages which sometimes have these bizarre spellings. I watched a PBS program recently about William Shakespeare--they found a transcript of a play he personally wrote and it was full of misspellings . . . and sometimes he spelled the same word in the same sentence "two different ways!" 😄
Loved your take on this . HE WAS A DRUNK & TOXIC . Tammy Wynette had to move on . He got sober for his next wife & last. GEORGE JONES IS A REAL COUNTRY MUSIC LEGEND.NOT LIKE NOW…
I agree....it just frustrates the hell out of me when someone does not get it....and then tries to dissect the meaning of the song. I know MrLboyd would not disappoint....lol
Brother your reaction at the 4:15 mark is priceless and that was the emotion he was trying to generate with this song, when you realize why he stopped loving her today, one of the best all time in my opinion
Nothing makes a beer more palatable than a good George Jones song. The ol' possum is a masterful storyteller and he plays your heartstrings like a guitar.
The song was released in 1980. George Jones was a master at making the listener feel what he was putting down. Jones himself was a deeply emotional man, so much so that he used drugs and alcohol (of EPIC proportions) to shut out the hurt inside. When George sang, you believed whatever he sang about, because he himself felt the feelings that he was singing about.
One of my favorite George Jones’ songs is “Who’s going to fill their shoes”? (and none of the new country artists could even come close) I really miss the “old country” even the crying in my beer songs of the good old days.
The saddest song ever made? Then I guess you haven't heard Elvis Presley's 1956 track, "Old Shep". Give it a listen, April. And have a box of tissues ready. You're gonna need 'em.
Yes! I’m 90! I cried the first time that I heard it & ever since!!! Although some of us don’t have to die to stop loving - nevertheless, this song is a masterpiece & only George can chill your soul with that sad, sad voice!!!
This is one of the greatest country songs of all time. I see the message of this song as an idea that I believe humanity has lost. It’s still within us all, but unfortunately most don’t value. The idea that anyone one of us can follow through on a commitment we make no matter what length of time that commitment is.
I love the fact that this song confused you & at the same time grabbed at your heart strings! Sir, that right there is what real Country music can do. Never forget this one old saying about how Country music is written: "Three chords & the truth" 🤗
I still get goosebumps listening to parts of that song, even though I first heard it a little over 30 years ago. So sad, but still one of my favorites!
@@elizabethy3909 I don't think that means what you think it means. In the song he pines for her. Never talks about calling her, watching her or any of that?
Yes, I can't imagine how so many ppl stay guarded or too self-obsessed to give their time learning about someone at letting them into your heart. Love doesn't fade, many claim to love but become spiteful--that is NOT love. Love is giving your trust, faith & while heart to someone. I can't imagine life without my husband.
THE. GREATEST. SINGER. EVER. There's so many songs from George that will tear your heart out. When he was healthy, and at his best, nobody else could touch him. And he's still better than most when he's drunk or not on point. Legend
The Possum! Had tickets just prior to him passing and last concert. He said he got us good with that one! Went to the event over 100 folks from country to rock every venue there. Tennessee, Airborne, US Army here HOOAH!!!
I was on my way to a camping trip when I heard George had died. His music had a way of transcending genre. We toasted him with bourbon that night. Rednecks, hippies, bankers, and waitresses all raised a glass.
The moment when he sang "Soon they'll Carry him away" and YOU realized WHAT it meant, now THAT is why those of us that KNOW the song are watching "Reaction" videos. PURE, GENUINE, REACTION. 😎
Your reaction was priceless. Once you realized what had happened, your whole concept of what you thought the song was talking about, did a 180. This song never fails to make my eyes start sweating.
That moment he realized the protagonist died....I love that expression. It shows how great this song is that it wasn't obvious that the reason 'he stopped loving her today' was because he died.
One of the best country songs ever. After he finished recording the song he said, “this is the saddest song I’ve ever heard”. If you want to really get into their story, and when I say they, I’m talking about George and Tammy, you should watch the series by the same name on Showtime or Paramount. Their lives together seemed to be written in the songs they recorded before they were together and most certainly after they were married and sadly divorced. They were the original “power couple” in country music. When you understand their story, and you listen to other songs by George, like The Race Is On, it brings a whole new meaning and context to a song he recorded before they were ever together. Stand By Your Man was recorded by Tammy in 1969, the year they were married. I could go on, and on. Check it out. Subscribed to your channel now so I can follow your other videos on George.
This song was voted song of the decade in the 80's It still gives me chills I always thought he felt this way about Tammy Wynette & I think a lot of others did too I thought Alan Jackson singing this at George's funeral was appropriate Whiskey Lullaby by Brad Pasley & Allison Kraus is another sad love you til I die song
I heard this song so many times growing up. George Jones was a particular favorite of my Dad's and this song, the story telling in it, is amazing. Recently I realized how much this mirrored my own parents, unfortunately cancer took my mom away, but my dad loved her till his dying breath. Thank you for reacting to it 🙂
We played this song at my Daddys funeral 8/22. Everytime i heard this song it brought me to tears. This is the 1st time ive been able to listen to this song since he passed. Daddy raised us on good honkey tonk music. I've edited this so many times because it's my favorite reaction video. Sir, my favorite part is when you realize what the song is all about. Thank you for reacting and enjoying❤
First time I heard this song many many years ago, when I realized the man died, I was in tears. The best country song of all time IMO and every time I hear it I get chills. George just tell this story, through his song, so well.
One of my very favorite country songs. It’s about true love, but they can’t be together…much like George and Tammy. It’s hard to not weep listening to it. ❤
Every true country music fan knows this song and I just waited until you realized why he stopped loving her. Such a sad song sung so eloquently with such a great voice.
I have an uncle who was just diagnosed with stage 4 cancer. This song will be in my memorial to him. He only loved one woman his whole life. They got married 3 times and divorced 3 times. This song has always reminded me of the two of them. She loved him too, but they just couldn’t live together and make it work.
I so appreciate your attention to this classic song. Nobody sings the sad songs like George. My paternal grandparents divorced when my dad was a young teenager. He and his sisters always felt my grandfather always loved my grandmother. The day my grandfather died my dad said "he stopped loving her today". I appreciate your reaction.
This song is like real life. Many times it just doesn't make sense... By the way, this was the greatest country song ever written. Thank you for listening to it.
I clicked on this video for the best country song ever written (the year was 1980) and your commentary just made my day. The expression on your face when you realized WHY he stopped loving her today 😂 priceless. You didn’t really think a happy ending was coming? Lol if you really want to cry, listen to whiskey lullaby
George married Tammy Wynette (mentioned in the early part of the clip) in 1969 and they divorced in 1975. George released this song in 1980. George did move on and did remarry. I think this song was about how he felt at that time and he was projecting out to the end of his life. But the magic of Tammy & George is only matched by Stevie & Lindsey. The sheer chemistry is magical!
This was one of my very unsentimental dad's favorite songs, but I didn't realize until after he died of leukemia in 1989 that it was because that's how he felt about my mom - till death do you part. She kept loving him and being his wife until she died of pneumonia in 2015, and then they were together again forever.
Quintessential county song. Best one ever written and no one can ever sing it the way The Possum does. The emotion he evokes from the listener, he was worried it was too sappy. No George, it's the best country music song ever written, period. A lot of others come close but still can't touch this, and I honestly don't think anyone could ever surpass it. It's one of those songs that should never be covered.
This song was written about my deceased husband's parent's. Phillips Lamar Jones and Helen Faye Barge. He loved her so much and she loved him as well. The love letter's dated in 1962 the year my deceased husband Herman Lamar was born.
It's beautiful ❤️ thank you for sharing that. On the way to plum ridge from kountze my Mom would always point to a property and say that's where George Jones lives. I don't know if it's true but we would listen to this song when we did.
This is old school country at its finest and is generally considered the greatest country song of all time. If you haven’t yet check out Brad paisley “whiskey lullaby”. A few more of Georgie’s classics are “a picture of me without out you”, still doing time and bartender blues
My parents were married in '79, my mom moved out to be with another guy in '90, and they divorced in '95. She married several times, he never did. This was his chosen song he wanted played at his funeral. My mom passed in '20, and my dad just passed in August '22. We found old letters and photos. This song fully sounds just like my dad's story.
This song was written by the late Curiy Putman my moms cousin. He also pened the classic Green Grass Of Home among others.I agree this is the best country song ever.
I remember the first time I heard this song I was driving home from work and I just started to cry so much that I had to pull over. Still gets me every time
One of my favorite songs of all time. Mr. Jones was an incredible artist. But yes, the crux of the story is that he loved her until the day he died. If he had moved on or not was a moot point, because if he did or not, he still loved her.
This song is from 1980, so it's 43 years old. It was contemporary when it came out. Songs don't have to tell you the whole story to make you feel something.
One of the saddest songs written. A lot of the younger generation don't know that when people used to have funerals in their homes they placed a wreath on the door. The tradition was eventually lost when funeral homes became common.
@@whatgives1482 I know that some southern areas other than mine will still hold the tradition. I live close to Chattanooga TN. People here usually have a wreath at graveside.
This always tops the lists of best country songs of all times; almost always scores in the top 5. Some younger listeners are unaware of the old funereal tradition of hanging a wreath on the door of the deceased. That line is the first indicator that the protagonist has died, and if they miss it, they're often confused about the entire song. I wonder how long it will be before will have to start explaining Jim Croce's 'Operator' to millennials.
Great 2nd reaction to this one. Such a great song you reacted twice to it 😉, not complaining, it is that good and I always enjoy. Nice to see you getting into more genres. You want to get into a good country artist's music. Check out Charley Pride. Crystal chandelier and Is anyone going to San Antone. Charley Pride, like George Jones, was an inspiration to country music in their time and even still.
I seen George Jones a day before my birthday 1 year before he died in my home town where I was born raised and still live today. It was one of the best birthday presents a guy could ask for. He could hardly sing by then though, it was my very first concert so I figured his voice was just giving out from singing so much. I didnt realize how ill he was. Seeing him right there in the flesh, a man I would listen to for hours at a time throughout the week, right in front of me. Its a unique fascinating feeling.
YES!!!! " He Stopped LOVING Her Today" is THE GREATEST COUNTRY AND WESTERN SONG EVER recorded, produced, and performed. THE GREAT IRONY about this particular song 8s that George Jones was EXTREMELY EXTREMELY ADAMANT AND DETERMINED NOT to record this particular so g because He found it to be WAY TOO DEPRESSING AND UPSETTING!!! He ABSOLUTELY AND POSITIVELY REFUSED to have anything to do with this particular song. This song was shelved for a very very long time because NO ONE, AND. I MEAN NO ONE was capable of hitting the notes 🎶🎶🎶 CORRECTLY!! As a result, the recording executives were displeased to say the very very least. After quite some time, the recording executives tried to give it another shot and came to the point of BEGGING George Jones to consider recording "He Stopped LOVING Her Today." After some DEEP REFLECTION along with some haggling and head butting, George Jones decided to record " He Stopped LOVING Her Today." Soon after this particular song was released to the public, it SOARED to Number One on The Billboard Charts and it reminded at The Top for quite a while. "He Stopped LOVING Her Today" is MOST CERTAINLY AND DEFINITELY THE GREATEST COUNTRY AND WESTERN SONG EVER RECORDED PRODUCED AND PERFORMED!! Coincidentally, George Jones became THE GREATEST COUNTRY AND WESTERN PERFORMER IF ALL TIME!!! THE GOAT 🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐!!!!! RIP GEORGE JONES!!! YOU ARE ABSOLUTELY AND POSITIVELY THE GOAT 🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐!!! YOU ARE HEAD AND SHOULDERS ABOVE EVERYONE ELSE!!! I would recommend that you consider also taking a look at " The Grand Tour." It's another heart wrenching song.
George Jones was a country music icon. His first big hit was White Lightning. He performed from the early 1950's until his death in 2013. Golden Ring, Two Story House, The Race is On, Still Doin' Time, If Drinkin' Don't Kill Me, and I Don't Need Your Rockin' Chair, are a few of his hits. I saw him in concert in the late 1990s and he was fantastic.
Yep if you don't pay attention to the very first line in the song "He said I'll love you till I die" the meaning of the chorus almost slips by you it takes a minute for people to realize the magnitude of what he said.
He meant it when he say " he will love her until he died", another classic song from George Jones is " Who's Gonna Fill Their Shoes" you have to check out the official music video for that one .
I’m 70 and grew up in country music, my father was leader of a popular country band from 1948 to 19 67, my brothers also for 10 years. George Jones is an ICON in the country music world, a musical vocal with gut feelings. Listen to his song “ The Chrystal Chandelier “ amazing career forever loved.
Pure, unadulterated vulnerability. Loved watching his facial reactions. We don't see much if this now. Everyone is so jaded. Our hearts are hard and digital compared to before the internet.
@@billwalker7556 I'm not embarrassed, and you were the one insisting on correcting someone else's post. I called you out because you were wrong with your correcting
I loved your reaction. Sadly, so many reactors do not understand that he has died....that he meant it when he said "I will love you til I die". I knew before I even watched this though , that you would catch the meaning...lol. This song has made me cry so many times over the years....the tone of George's voice and the way he drags the words out so emotionally just get me...and it reminds me of an uncle & aunt of mine also. Just a classic , perfect sad song.
I love George. A voice made for Country. The first line "He said I'll love you till I die" and the title "He Stopped Loving Her Today" give it up immediately. One of my favorite songs of all time.
The songwriters mother was the manager of the small apartment complex in Davie, FL (1969-1970). His father was a race horse trainer and was working in New York state.
this song came out at the perfect time for George Jones. He and Tammy wynette had divorced and he had been struggling with alcoholism, which resulted in him missing shows, and The grand tour album was a great way to come back. He didn't write this song but he was in a situation that made it work better than it would have with any other singer.
My older sister (named Tammy) listened to this song over and over when we were merely middle school kids. I wasn't a fan of G. Jones, but she sure was. Even though I wasn't a country music fan of that day, I am now. I do appreciate the talented musicians and their story telling skills. Watching this guy reaction here cracks me up! Most people are crying in the beer by the end of this song, however, I am enjoying the look on Mr. Lboyd face, because it's the first time he has experienced the real deal country Legend. I believe George was torn up over Ms. Wynette. She left a mark on his soul. (I prefer to watch this verses hearing that song.)
Wow! I'm an instant fan of yours!! This song makes me cry. I grew up listening to country music and George & Tammy were always on the radio. And as I've grown older, these songs and this music is beautiful to me. 🙏Thank you for doing a show about this s particular song. This is my first time seeing your channel. I can't wait to watch more of your videos. 🙏🙏🙏
How great to witness the reaction the first time hearing this song. I’ve listened to it at least a hundred times and it gets me every time. The reaction here validates my feelings for it. I was wondering if it still has the surprise and impact, or if I’m just an emotional cornball. Thanks for the confirmation!
You know what. I think u hit it on the head. Wow. I’ve listened to this song 10k times. I never caught that. And the next verse confirms it. Went to de him today. Didn’t see no tears. He dressed himself up. Died with a smile. Wow. Nice call there.
I just came accross your channel. I was watching your face and your expressions made the song more emotional for me, Wow! Also, never knew the man died in the song, until now. Wow, Wow! Thanks, great youtube channel.
Your face was priceless! It’s crazy when you t realize it. They have a George and Tammy show on Netflix I think. Haven’t watched it yet but I bet it’ll tell the story.
George Jones knew how to tell a story in his songs, particularly the ones that appeared to be so significantly close to his own life. I’m very much enjoying the special on now of George and Tammy. I saw him once years ago in Dallas and I wore out her cassette playing them over and over in high school. Two of the greats…
I finally went to a George Jones concert just a few years before he passed away. At the very first riff of the guitar, the whole audience was on its feet. We knew what song he was about to do! Isn't it a tear-jerker? RIP Mr. Jones. Another song, I think it's underrated, is Who's Gonna Fill Their Shoes.
Yes we just played Who's going to fill their shoes tonight after my dad left my brothers new year's eve party at 10 pm because he had in so much back pain. Hes such a proud strong man and it took 2 grown men to practically carry my dad out to the car. I bawled like a baby watching that. Hes 76 years old. He grew up on the Michigan State Experiment Station in the U.P. of Michigan and worked there until he graduated from high school, went down state to work at GM, worked at the Apache Ranch as a ranch hand while working a 2nd job taking care of horses for someone else, did over the road trucking for 20 years hauling steel until his health issues made him not pass a cdl physical (his semi rolled partially over him while he was under it for maintenance). I know too much info but to me and my brother he is our hero. We are 53 and 50 years old. Who's going to fill his shoes after he's gone...absolutely no one and I'll probably be in a straight jacket because i won't be able to handle it. Everything he did in his life since day he married my mom right out of high school was for his family.
Who's Gonna Fill Their Shoes is amazing! It's been 10 years this April since Mr. Jones passed and I STILL cannot listen to that song without totally breaking down. It's like he was singing about himself without ever crediting himself for being that well-known and well-liked, but that's no shock considering who it was coming from. He was one of the few stars that never really considered themselves to be that great.
Did you ever get set up with a sad, beer drinking song. Country music, like the Blues, sometimes doesn't have the happy ending, because life doesn't always have happy endings. Good review
I remember when He stopped loving her today came out in 1980 and it immediately became a huge hit, My Mother who is a huge George Jones fan loves this song, She called me the day George Jones passed in '13 very upset. George Jones was iconic.
This is one of my favorite George Jones songs, and I remember how it hit me the first time I heard it - exactly how it hit you. I enjoyed watching you discovering the story line and your reactions were priceless. I've shared this song with others who just didn't get it or didn't appreciate it. George Jones was an amazing story teller who absorbed himself into the song and his delivery drew in the listeners and their emotions. Fun fact: George didn't like the song when his producer approached him with it, he thought it was dark and morbid and would not sell. Boy was he wrong! Check out his song "The Grand Tour"
