The first line gives it away..." He said I'll love you till I die". No matter what happens after that he kept his word. In the end it's about true love, even if it might be one sided.
George and Tammy were married at one time. George didn't want to record this song. He said this is the saddest damn song I ever heard. No one wants to hear this. It went to #1. George kept showing up to the recording studio drunk. So they pieced together all his sessions and it turned out great❤
George released this song in 1980 - was a monster hit for him late in his life. To everyone's surprise he released a song in 1985 called Whose gonna fill their shoes. Seeing how country music had moved almost completely out of the traditional realm - the song hit home. You still had those greats like George Strait and Alan Jackson who kept true to the traditional country sound - and as you see they have lasted many many years. Another great reaction. Thanks!
There will NEVER be another George Jones. His powerful voice has influenced so many people for decades upon decades. The greatest singers acknowledge him as the best. Even Frank Sinatra gave him props. Johnny Cash and Waylon Jennings both put him above all the rest. He is a legend among legends.
@@IFdude Merle Haggard said his favorite singer is George Jones. He once said, “Jones's voice is like a Stradivarius violin: one of the greatest instruments ever made".
Its been said that when George Jones sings, the audience cries, I cry and the house starts leaking. Waylon Jennings said "If we all could sing like we wanted, we'd all sound like George Jones". I agree. Great reaction.
This is largely considered the greatest country song of all time. For more upbeat ones of his try "The Race is On" and "White Lightnin", other great story songs but heart rending are "The Grand Tour " "A Picture of Me Without You" and a duet with Tammy Wynett "Golden Ring ".
We will never have another George sadly cause we don't have country music anymore! Lol it's more hip hop and pop! At least we have the music to play from the greats, and George was a legend! Great reaction
George had a LOT of sad songs, Things Have Gone to Pieces, Window Up Above, The Grand Tour and A Picture of Me Without You come to mind immediately, but this song was even too sad for George. Initially, he did not want to record it because it said it was so sad that no one would ever want to listen to it. It turned out to be his biggest hit! Actually, everyone who is married or who was ever married has made this same vow, "He said I'll love you till I die" because isn't that what the line, "till death us do part" in the marriage vows is saying? Sadly, millions of people do not take that vow seriously. The guy in this song said, "I'll love you till I die" and that's exactly what he did, he loved her until he died.
He was married to Tammy Wynette. He effed it up. She left. He never quite got over it. The song is about a fictionalized him not being able to get over her.
🇺🇸🌟🇺🇸 This gentleman had the best reaction out of all the reaction videos I’ve watched ,he got it right off 👍 some that I’ve watched they didn’t have a clue.
There WILL NEVER EVER BE a song such as "He Stopped LOVING Her Today!!"" And, there WILL NEVER EVER BE another Country and Western Performer like THE POSSUM!!! He is THE GOAT 🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐!!! PERIOD!!!
The letters dated 1962 we’re probably when he was in Vietnam. We wrote letters back then because no computers. Pen and ✍️ ink. Hang a black wreath on the door was a custom when some died, especially in the south. Your expression when you got it was priceless.
That steel guitar and harmonica should have questions you in on this wasn’t going to end well. Classic country music right here! The ol Possum could tell a story!
This has to be one of the saddest songs ever, but so elegant in its simplicity and I get misty eyed every time I hear it. I especially loved seeing your reaction when the penny dropped. Love your work, mate.
I hope someday you get a chance to listen to an artist by the name of Big AL Downing. He is an African American country music singer/songwriter. He never got the recognition he deserved. His two favorite songs of mine are "Mr Jones" and "The story behind the story." You will not be disappointed, especially since you like story telling songs.
You should check out Linda Martell. Color Him Father and Bad Case Of The Blues. She was the first commercially successful black female country singer. Her career was short but she had some hits. And her voice amazing.
The man's 2nd most well known nickname is No Show Jones. He's a top 10 alcoholic of all time and still did all that and had that voice....him riding his John Deere to the beer store when they took away all his keys isn't a joke
Thanks, MrBoyd! George (Possum) Jones.. was amazing.. and you should definitely hear some of the others - he totally deserved her leaving... listen to some more... you'll get it... lol

George recorded the number 1 sad country music love song, in the history of music. Loved the look on your face when you understood he was no longer among the living. Great reaction.
Love the fact that you , understand that he died, .. most reactions , don't get it , even at the end , I'm thinking that most reactors are narcissist, because they have no empathy
‘He said I’ll love you til I die’ is the opening lyric and says it all. Then, “They hung a wreath upon his door’ is another clue that he had died. Hanging a black wreath on someone’s door was a sign to all who saw it that this household was in mourning. This was tradition for hundreds of years and brought to the New World by immigrants. This is still practiced in the south and small towns across America. I used to own a flower shop and we had one we gave the family if they used us for their funeral florals. I come from a Central California town. I grew up on old school country. There’s so much truth in the lyrics!💞
Where I live, it's usually a white wreath. I've lived in North Carolina all of my long life and I've never seen a black one. But we all know when we see that wreath what has happened.
That "WHA?!?!?!?" moment you had... THAT'S the power of the song. But the entire story is in the first and last lines "He said 'I'll love you, till I die.' ... He stopped loving her today." It still boggles my mind how many people miss the point of the story though.
It's always fun watching the reactor's face when they realized WHY he stopped loving her today. It's like when people realize the ending of The Sixth Sense 😀
In most cases, life doesn't end jovial regardless of circumstances.... by the way .I completely understand why you have dumped down your content, but I think your true followers would appreciate the real Mrboyd... sorry for the grammatical errors. I'm a bit dyslexic.
Why did you use the thumbnail of Tammy and George singing together then play "he stopped living her...." ? AND.... Don't try to figure it out before you listen to it all!!
In all fairness, no he isn't. There are just too many country legends such as Merle Haggard, Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Conway Twitty, Marty Robbins, Charlie Pride, etc. to name only a few to actually call him the best unless it is simply a personal opinion. This song was in the top as far as best country songs, just as "Believe" by Brooks and Dunn or so many other country songs that have touched us with the stories they have told. George was well liked and respected by his peers and spoken of highly by them.
In answer to the question in your video title... yes, George Jones was the best country music singer of all time. I doubt that'll ever change. BTW, this song is on many "greatest country music songs of all time" lists as number one. Between the lyrics, and how his voice conveys their meaning, it's pretty hard to top.
This was their marriage! Tammy Wynette love him so much & he just wouldn't get sober. I won't type a ton! She had to get away from him! But she loved him too! She ended up dying before George!! She tried everything to say. He was the sweetest man on earth when he was sober!! I happen to know him & I miss him sooo much! He finally got sober In the end with his last wife Nancy. She was a sweetheart!!
The original recording of this song is much better than his live recording. George had so many hits that it's hard to pick one to suggest. Golden ring is a good one. The race is on. Window above. The grand tour is very good also. Another artist you may want to look at would be Randy Travis. 3 wooden crosses. Holly Dunn Daddy's hands.
He was in jail on death row. She wouldn’t visit him while in jail. The day he was to be executed she came by for one last visit. That’s why he stopped loving her today.
I love watching these reactions. I grew up listening to these songs with my grandma and seeing other people hear them fornthe first time really brings the meaning back to a song i have heard a million times
Tammy Wynette and George Jones were married at one point (hence the reference to her), George absolutely loved her and this song was written because of his love for her.
None other than Frank Sinatra said that George Jones was the second best singer in America. I love that quote: it tells you a lot about George Jones and a lot about Frank Sinatra.
One of the greatest songs of all time and sung by one of the greatest legends in country music of all time!! Matter of fact my favorite!!! Appreciate if u would react to George Jones " Window up Above".. Its a good one!
George and Tammy were married at one time and have a daughter together. He adopted her first two children. When they started back singing together on tour she had remarried. “I have a new husband in law”
This is the best of country,... and most of us thought long ago. he was singing it to Tammy.. but apparently that was not the case.... George supposedly didn't even want to sing this because of the conotations to Tammy
At first George Jones didn’t want to do this song, he said it was morbid. It became one of his biggest hits and is considered by some to be the greatest country song of all time.
