Is Histamine Intolerance The Cause Of Your Mysterious Symptoms?

Most people are familiar with certain histamine conditions, such as the development of a welt from a bee sting or hives from a peanut allergy. However, symptoms ranging from brain fog to digestive problems, menstrual cycle problems, nausea, vomiting, edema, palpitations, and anxiety can all also result from issues of histamine intolerance. Unfortunately, this issue commonly goes undiagnosed, often resulting in years of ongoing frustration and suffering among individuals struggling to find the cause of their mysterious symptoms.⁣

In this episode, Dr. Hyman sits down with Dr. Todd LePine to talk about how they work with patients to get to the root cause of histamine intolerance. They discuss the rising prevalence of mast cell activation syndrome (MCAS), how gut health influences histamine, and much more.⁣

Dr. LePine graduated from Dartmouth Medical School and is Board Certified in Internal Medicine, specializing in Integrative Functional Medicine. He is an Institute for Functional Medicine Certified Practitioner. Prior to joining The UltraWellness Center, he worked as a physician at Canyon Ranch in Lenox, MA, for 10 years. Dr. LePine’s focus at The UltraWellness Center is to help his patients achieve optimal health and vitality by restoring the natural balance to both the mind and the body. His areas of interest include optimal aging, bio-detoxification, functional gastrointestinal health, systemic inflammation, autoimmune disorders and the neurobiology of mood and cognitive disorders. Dr. LePine teaches around the world, and has given lectures to doctors and patients at American College for Advancement in Medicine (ACAM), Age Management Medicine Group (AMMG), the University of Miami Integrative Medicine Conference, The Kripalu Center in Lenox, MA, and is on the faculty for American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine (A4M). Dr. LePine is the head of the Scientific Advisory Board for Designs for Health and a consultant for Diagnostic Solutions Laboratory. He enjoys skiing, kayaking, hiking, camping and golfing in the beautiful Berkshires, and is a fitness enthusiast.⁣

It's shocking. They can't even spend a decent amount of time to talk to you to get to the bottom of why you're feeling ill. They make a diagnosis and prescribe pills. Then they will have you running back and forth to monitor your symptoms or adjust medications. It's such a big business.

My son has been suffering, basically a recluse, unable to eat almost anything. He’s only 23. We’ve spent thousands of dollars for an IBS diagnosis. Yet he’s no better. He’s gotten to the point where he hates being hungry, hates his life. I’ve been praying so hard & he just “stumbled across” the idea of histamine sensitivity. It checks all the boxes. My husband had an oral allergy for over 15 years, he couldn't eat any fresh fruit and vegetables without throwing up. I mentioned this to a gastroenterologist I was seeing and he said ask him to try a good probiotic. So went online and found an article about this topic, histamine intolerance. Sounded really familiar because he has really bad seasonal allergies too. The article suggested using a probiotic with three specific strains of bacteria. Found a product that fit the bill and after a month or two of using it, he finally found the courage to eat an orange. It worked! He hasn't looked back since then. For anyone with this problem it might be worth trying probiotics. Will look for the article if anyone is interested in this topic.

Yes! and a dirty DAO (balances POWERFUL histamine) is only ONE, (particularly nasty when broken) of 7 detox pathway genes better known as your digestive tract which not only digests nutrition, but also drives your immune system and is directed by your thyroid. MTHFR is another common one. Most who have one busted one will have others. Unlucky have 4 or more. An MD will say if you cannot methylate, you cannot live. THEY are WRONG. Directly tied to neurotransmitter issues as well.... off the rails Hello with CNS problems from B12 and Folate deficiency. MTHFR people need methylated B12 which is found in primarily in whole foods . Enrichments in processed foods are synthetics a compromised MTHFR metabolism cannot process. So you may show high B12 in blood yet still be grossly deficient in body. That fubars your entire metabolism. Messes with your iron, which can go toxic. (Hemochromatosis) Now your blood cannot carry enough oxygen the right way, and you eventually oxidize too much Iron. That can lead to a lot of nasty health shit including cancer. Ben Lynch book Dirty Genes and The end of Alzheimer's by Dale Bredensen.... all you need to understand your body and heal it.

So deeply sad that a retired person on a low fixed income can never afford to get the type of help that functional medicine provides. I have good insurance but (understandably) functional medicine docs don’t take insurance patients. I’ve known for 2 decades that my body is highly reactive to lots and lots of foods. Many foods make and keep me sick. I spend a large portion of my income on organic food and it helps. But I still haven’t figured out a plan that keeps overwhelming joint pain, fatigue, headaches and congestion from ruining most days. My family can’t understand why modern medicine can’t help someone who’s had the same symptoms for a lifetime. I have a bunch of kind caring physicians in various disciplines but no one wants to hear about overwhelming body reactions to food. And weather. They just have no reference for that picture. So. I’m back, once again, to a huge personal research effort to figure it out alone. Just started a very low histamine diet. Not too hard because I already eliminated dairy and gluten years ago. Thanks for the show and info. Hopefully it will make the next 20 years better than the last 70.

search the dirty super 7 genes on line and see what resonates and then deep dive. This can be game changing. DAO/histamine is only ONE of them. Leaky gut usually triggers several, like MTHFR. Impacts B12 and Folate assimilation. A big deal for the human CNS (Central Nervous System) Been there and done that. RCP dietary lifestyle is huge with calming auto immunes as well. Hashimoto's is highly a complex metabolic condition driven by an abrasive processed dietary lifestyle.

It’s the body’s way of making us stop what we’re doing and take care of our physical to fix the mental. In struggled for 10 years and no med fixed it. Drs don’t get to the bottom of the problem just put a band aide on it and send us home

I believe everyone should have a functional or neuropathy doctor no question. Unfortunately it costs more to be healthy. But functional doctors/neuropathic doctors are what modern doctors wish they were and I mean that. All doctors come into the field to help people, the problem is they get into a environment set up to screw not only doctors over such as the money they owe not to mention the finances needed T o keep a business open is ridiculous causing a secondary reaction of charging more, but it often injures the patient... Unfortunately now the doctors are stuck in this broken field set up against everyone. But functional doctors realized this and broke free... Started their own practices and actually aim to get to the root where as modern docs focus on treating the symptoms

Thank you for being a pioneer in the field of functional medicine and continuing to enlighten us about it. This sounds like something that I might have as a lot of foods that I eat (even the “good” food) can cause distress in one way or another. I suffer from random attacks from rash breakouts to huge hives that the cause has been idiopathic in nature. Throughout the years I have discovered, on my own, some of the causes, like wearing pierced earrings has caused my lips to swell but only 1/2 of a lip at a time and in different sections. So weird! Food and water temperature differences are also culprits. I had a breakout of lesions that sounded like ones mentioned in your video. These lesions were like scabs that you couldn’t pick off and lasted over a year. Most are gone now but I still have one on my shoulder I recently noticed that it becomes aggravated and itchy depending on what I eat. I wish I could afford to make an appointment to see you as I live in a town near your practice in Lenox but at least I will have more awareness of how the food I eat affects me. I have been on a health journey for a few years now and have made some progress and have had some set backs but watching you and other pioneers in the field has made my journey somewhat easier. This video in particular was most helpful. Thanks again for being brave enough to go forward while you were being mocked and dismissed. PS I used to work at the Ranch at the Back Spa Desk and in the women’s locker room.

I was recently diagnosed with POTS/Dysautanomia after decades of anxiety, depression, panic attacks and CFS (post Glandular Fever), intolerance to exercise and heat. Eventually increased to high BP erratic HR and I collapsed in shopping centre. I'm still waiting for assessments/tests but in the meantime I investigated my symptoms with POTS and noticed mast cell activation is often a co occurring problem. I started a low histamine diet (I was already 90% plant based) as I'd always had 'mild' environmental allergies and a few noticeable food intolerance which seemed to be IBS and leaky gut (yet to be diagnosed, if ever due to finances) I've started taking antihistamines sometimes multiple times a day along with a strict low histamine 'trigger food' diet. The change has been incredible, even insomnia, nightmares, depression and anxiety have lifted. I feel like I've spent decades suffering for no reason. Now trying to rebuild/recondition my body that's been bedridden for most of the last four years. Can't believe that this was missed by doctors, never even considered. Decades of my life are gone but at least at 50 I now have an opportunity to heal and be happy. I never would have believed my mood was so tied to histamines and my diet.

I have had 5-6 issues of histamine flares in a four year period of time. What I have found to work is to go low on high histamine foods for about two weeks, take two quercitin, on B6, and Betaine HCL to tolerance with each meal. Keep up the quercitin and Betaine and you may not have too many more issues with this.

Excellent interview. My functional medicine doctor suspected that many of my symptoms were related to a histamine intolerance so he added DAO to my daily supplements and it sure has made a difference. I have been dealing with leaky gut due to celiac disease, SIBO, and Candida, so high histamine foods cause me mast cell activation syndrome. My condition has caused many symptoms as mentioned in this podcast, ie: headaches, sinusitis, nausea, anxiety which leads to insomnia, chronic fatigue, joint pain, itchy eyes, multiple food sensitivities, and just feeling miserable. I am on a limited diet trying to stick with protein, vegetables and healthy fats, but I had added a lot of prebiotic foods to help heal my gut but so many of these healthy foods create too much histamine in my body. Adding DAO has helped me digest and has taken away so many of my histamine symptoms. This is a great interview to share because most people, including doctors, are clueless about the role of histamine in health problems. Thank you for sharing this.

What an amazing interview! I learnt so much from it. I lost 2 of my brothers 4 years ago, I was pretty sure they were victims of our modern medical care system. For example, my younger brother had acid reflux soon after my father passed away and he was put on antacid for nearly a decade and his depression/paranoia gotten so bad he killed himself. I had depression too after my father passed away and then my mother’s passing away from cancer 5 years later, then my 2 brothers’ passing away after that, it was lucky that I didn’t sort to depend on drugs or substances to overcome it. And now after living a healthy lifestyle and eating the right food for the last 3 years, I managed to stopped my dependence on dopamine, and I don’t even get depressions anymore. I totally believe in functional medicine, but then finding the right doctor or adviser is vital too, it would be worse relying on someone who doesn’t understand your body. So arming oneself with all the basic knowledge of healthy living is quite essential before finding a good functional medical doctor. My 2 cents 😘

What are chromatin and Xanax for in this situation???? Does it relate to allergies l am aware that Xanax helps my anxiety no side affects. Never heard of the other one. I must have missed it. So much info to absorb and not knowing the meaning of All the terminology . Am in my 80s & still looking & trying to find answers. But only homophatic way , not taking pills. We wouldn't have near the problems if they didn't alter our food & cause so many people problems, but ,alas what would the pharma do , go broke. Yes I need to improve my attitude ( Dr.) But they do suck!!

Oh my goodness. Years of suffering and doctor's visits, including Mayo clinic. Ignorance (both mine and the medical system's) and lack of humility and genuine conern from doctors left me with nothing but my own ability to study. I was full of parasites and had Lyme and co-infections. It's a wonder I survived and all I am all about raising awareness. I have made great progress and think I am getting well, thanks, in part, to those who care enough to be students of health like these men, and who are eager to help humanity thrive.

I happen to stumble on this video today searching for anything and everything to find the reason for the issues that plague me. Going to your website now. Hoping to find any information/help that might start a process to my recovery.

Very informative I’ve suffered from food intolerance for a very long time. I removed wheat and helped tremendously changed my life but I can’t seem to figured out the rest. I suffer from migraines my whole life although better I’m still dealing with it. Like an allergic reaction daily to something. Can really only eat I meal a day but I’ve been trying to eat an egg in the morning and small salad or Greek yogurt for lunch but just bloats me and cant have normal bowel unless I only eat once a day except I’m hypoglycemic I’m assuming due to my gut issues. So thankful you guys are working this out although I don’t have doctors near me who understand food as medicine it gives me the understanding to work it out myself in time. You guys are hero’s to us who are suffering through this alone.

I also had mastocytosis once unexpectedly in 2006. Never knew what triggered it but a massive dose of cortisone got rid of it but made me very sick. I do have other symptoms of histamine intolerance (I.e. sinusitis, asthma, insomnia, bowel issues and periodic hives). I am going to try eliminating foods high in histamines and hope it works

(Tryptasemia) 5) Polycythemia Vera 6) Cardiac Issues - PVCs & Hypertension 7) Idiopathic Anaphylaxis 8) Gluten Intolerant 9) Dermatological issues 10) Musculoskeletal Issues Took 25yrs of Dr's and their narrow minds to make me determined to find some of the finest GPs and Specialists out there. I'm so lucky to have found a true diagnosis of my multiple issues. Life can be hard at times, but I've only got one, so I just put one foot in front of the other and get on with it.

I was born 2 months early, and I think it resulted in me having a very underdeveloped and imbalanced microbiome. I've had hives, dermogratophia, and asthma my entire life. I developed panic disorder, severe interstitial cystitis, and SIBO as an adult, and nothing seems to help. In fact, the older I get and the more treatments and diets I try, the worse I feel. I even saw an immunologist who just told me to basically live off of antihistamines. It's such a frustrating way to go through life. I'm so glad you're spreading the word about this information. Hopefully the medical community will catch up.
