There’s actually a couple Vice mini-documentaries on plants. The one on the spiritus being stolen from a botanical garden is pretty interesting. But yeah, I dig the style of reporting on this channel as well as the emphasis on leca 🤗

Again the information presented is exactly what we as consumers need to here in order to gain experience from those who pioneer before us. I for one will always shop and buy from someone who shares truths rather than hold their findings close to the vest so as not to affect their sales. Thank you Chris for all your efforts.

When asked, I generally will steer people toward buying domestically now. The price difference is no longer the huge divide that it once was. And while you pay a bit more to buy domestically, I think the difference is made up for by the shorter ship time/wait (which can be really stressful with imports), less chance of having to "acclimate", communication, and supporting a small business locally. That's just my opinion. I will say that importing a giant box of hoyas from Thailand was a rush for me. But now I'd rather just spend that money one one big specimen from a domestic seller. Obviously people need to decide for themselves. But I try to present domestic as having advantages.

This is crazy. Monstera albo are super cheap in the UK. around £70 for a established plant.

I'm honestly sick of importing from Indonesia. They take forever and the plants usually suffer heat damage,I'm in fl, and most don't survive. While the sellers claim the will replace they still don't cover shipping. I've found many quality sellers here in the US and now prefer to keep my spending in our economy supporting small business.
@oliverbrown1804
@oliverbrown1804 11 месяцев назад
@@aquaman461 the UK houseplant market is very small compared to US houseplant market. I’m noticing that slowly we are establishing small niche houseplant communities which allows hobbyists to trade plants. This isn’t fully established yet so we are forced to import unfortunately. But US is better in this regard.
@charlottecobain6986
@charlottecobain6986 11 месяцев назад
@@oliverbrown1804 There’s a fair few greenhouses/nurseries in the Netherlands and I think the proximity causes the ease of importing to allow for cheaper prices in the uk on stuff like Monstera albos as well. The US is such a unique (and large) market where the prices can be inflated on the basis of false scarcity and there’s a strong social media influence that causes people to think they NEED something they see and they WANT it NOW, so they pay insanely high prices. The US plant community is really…something lol, especially post-covid lockdowns. So glad this is the only form of social media I engage with.

@@aquaman461 Thanks for this comment. I’ve been considering an order from greenspaces but haven’t wanted to put in the energy to deal with the permits and all that. Plus with the heat I was thinking waiting until fall would be best. I may still try it out once with an order of $500ish or less, but I talk myself into and out of it a lot and it’s nice to see someone’s experience that’s not a sponsored/semi-sponsored video where someone is getting free plants to make the video.

I'm importing about 150 plants a week from Thailand. I'm paying $58.00 for a 4 to 5 leaf Albo. Shipping for the entire order ends up being around $400 to $600 each order. I'm getting large Thai Cons for $22.00..

Can you feature next some Etsy sellers, mostly from Sri Lanka, who sell very cheap alocacia corms, seeds, cuttings etc. They are also using fake photoshopped pictures. I have not been scammed but thought it may help others to be more careful with this site also.

Are there online shops in EU selling highly variegated albo borsigianas with reasonable prices? I've watched videos from Kaylee Ellen and she said that the growers in Netherlands keep the highly variegated plants and only sell the poorly variegated plants to resellers, so that the consumers will have hard time getting a nice albo borsigiana... I don't really buy expensive plants, so I consider 100 euros for a plant not reasonable...I want to spend only about 50 euros for a plant so that I wouldn't need to cry if the plant dies!

I think I’ve seen that they changed the rules for import permits and they’re required for even a single plant now 🤦🏻‍♀️🙄 super annoying but from an environmental standpoint I guess there’s valid logic behind it….not that I think that’s the motivation

I imported from Aroid Asia 3 times and had great results the first time I got ordered 6 plants and then sent a bonus plant the other two times I ordered 11 plants and they were great. The third time a plant died and they sent me a replacement for free but the 4th time I ordered from them, 11 plants again back in December 2022 and they informed me that I would need an import permit which I don't qualify for. I paid over $600, it's been 7 months I and still don't have anything in return but just emails that they require an import permit even if its just for a single plant and won't refund me. But I'm the only one getting this treatment from them. I know other people who still buy lots of plants from them without a permit and receive the plants.

What are the current albo prices in the US, are they still this high? I recently got my 4 leaf, fully established, beautiful albo for £50. I also got a 7 leaf (4 large) Thai Constellation for £80. I think most of our ‘rare’ plants in the UK come from the growers in the Netherlands, which is literally a ferry ride away so the prices are coming down. My friend just bought a pink princess for £3!

Is it bound to happen again, where certain plants become hard to find and the prices go up like crazy? Or was it an isolated situation given covid? I got into indoor plants in 2022 so I missed the plant craze😂

It's a good deal but you still run the risk of having them come to you in a poor state. I saw your last video by the way, I'm sorry for what happened. But it's proof that the difficulty of getting plants imported and arriving in good health is another factor to consider aside from the price. An $80 dollar albo is still a loss if you receive it severely damaged and you have to rehabilitate it for 3+ months to be able to sell it again, imo.

I think one parameter overlooked in the video is the carbon footprint of your plant being much higher if it crossed halff the globe, otherwise great video.
