Is Indonesian Food Good? 🇮🇩 Trying Traditional Dishes in Bali, Indonesia

While visiting Ubud, Bali, we headed out into the town to find some local, authentic Indonesian dishes! If you are wondering what types of Indonesian foods to try while visiting Bali, we have a great list for you!
We started at a restaurant called Ayam Yummy and here we tried three dishes. The first dish was chicken satay, which is essentially chicken skewers in a peanut sauce, it also came with rice and steamed veggies. We also tried Gado Gado, which is an indonesian salad with some stream greens, a boiled egg and tofu, served with a peanut sauce. the third dish we had was Ayam Betutu, which is a chicken dish that is cooked in a banana leaf. Our came with streamed veggies and rice and also a spicy sauce.
Our second location was Warung Babi Guling. Babi Guling is a well known Indonesian dish, also known as suckling pig. A lot of people told us we had to get the roasted skin as part of the dish but we were unfortunately there too late in the day so be sure to go early! We did get fried skin with it as well as rice.
Lastly we decided that we had to try an Indonesian dessert. We went to a restaurant called Warung biah biah where we tried Pisang Goreng, a deep friend banana fritter served with vanilla ice cream.

The ‘chips’ are actually crackers. It’s usually prawn (pinkish ones) or fish or cuttlefish (dull beige-y colour). In Indonesia, Malaysia, Brunei and Singapore (where I’m from), it’s called keropok (KER-ROW-POKE). It’s usually eaten as a snack like you would eat popcorn or chips. But like chips in some North American dishes, some Indonesian dishes have these keropok, prawn or fish crackers. The way you ate it with the salad is correct. The salted tofu might be tempeh (compressed fermented soya beans). It’s usually seasoned with a little salt and deep fried or some sweet sambal chilli paste is added to it + veggies and / or other ingredients.

Sate in Balinese style is Sate lilit. Sate with peanuts sauce is Sate Madura. Gado-Gado originally from Jakarta. Gado-Gado Jakarta. Urap-Urap is originally javanese dish. Balinese dish : Sate lilit Ayam betutu Lawar Babi guling Etc You can watch Indonesian Mukbang RU-vidr to know "good restaurant" like Nex Charlos, Farida Nurhan, etc

At 6:45 you have videoed the answer to the age old question.... "why did the chicken cross the road?" To get to the scooters. Finally... food that I can eat... steamed veggie's and rice. She was eating pork rinds/skins for sure. You don't have those in canada... eh??? :-) The prices are really reasonable too. thanks. Looks better than the south Florida weather we are having.
@DelightfulTravellers
@DelightfulTravellers 5 лет назад
There are chickens everywhere in Bali haha. We definitely have pork rinds here in 🇨🇦 but we don't normally eat them or order pork. Too bad about your weather there at the moment but I bet it's a lot better than the Canadian winter 😀 - Trevor

Typical south florida winter weather. As for the chickens... you are the only living humans to capture a live video of a chicken crossing the road. Sorta like the big foot video.. except that was fake. :-) Thanks.

Actually to me personally and many other indonesians(no offense balinese people 😅) balinese food is just meh. I recommended jakarta, medan, bandung, surabaya and the island of lombok for culinary adventures. Sure every city every region has something that is pretty good. But in general those places i mentioned are better than bali. Though, i never been to manado, makassar and a few other well known for its food.

Good to know Carlos 😀 We only ventured to Bali on this trip so we have lots more of Indonesia to explore. I don't doubt for a minute that some of the best food is in the lesser known touristy places., but that said.. the food in Bali was exceptional all around. - Trevor

Never eat Indonesian food without the rice. The art is to combine the plain almost sweet taste of the white rice with the strong rich , hot & tasty food to make all of the combinations become balance & delicious. The main menu of Indonesian food is the rice. It’s appear in form of plain rice, lontong, ketupat, buras etc ( rice cake that wrap in many tipe of leaves)

@@DelightfulTravellers Thank you for your appreciation to our foods, there are many delicious foods around the world. Spicy food increase libido and metabolism, chili and some spices rich in vitamin and antioxidant but on the other hand Spicy food could also render our taste buds dull and less sharp, thus decrease appetite to less seasoned foods. Many Indonesian (friend of mine )found it difficult to adjust to Korean foods the first few months when arrived in S Korea. Only after a few months our taste buds regain sharpness and able to appreciate foods with less flavors. The downside of spicy foods is that it dulls our taste buds.
