EMERGENCY: ON A FIRST CAPITAL CONNECT TRAIN
#SouthernStrike - "What if.." Video 4 - IS IT EVER SAFE TO DEPART
These videos are based on real events but the locations, characters and companies featured are the product of this dramatisation. Please note some viewers may find some scenes upsetting.

• TOO MUCH TO CONCENTRAT...
The dramatic incident featured is based on real life events which culminated in a passenger falling into the gap between the platform and the train. Imagine yourself as a passenger on the train or on the platform if you were to witness an incident like this? What would you do? Who would you blame? Could the driver, guard or dispatch staff have done anything? Could the guard and dispatcher see clearly what was happening along the platform? Were they too busy with other tasks? Should the train have been allowed to depart? Was it safe for the train to depart? Is it ever safe to depart?
Think this doesn't happen in real life? WRONG! YES IT DOES!
• MERSEYRAIL GUARD IMPRI...
www.gov.uk/rai...
www.liverpoolec...
This incident involves THREE members of railway staff, the driver, the guard and the platform dispatcher, ergo three pairs of eyes. With driver only trains becoming the preferred method of operation for Train Operating Companies (TOCs) to operate their services the number of eyes is reduced from SIX to just TWO.
Remember "DOO is safe"
This dramatisation was made by the RSSB and highlights the increased dangers of the Platform Train Interface (PTI).
This video is copyright of the RSSB and is presented here for education & evaluation purposes only.

I used to work on the railway. The train was clear when RA was given, so this wasn't his fault. The dispatcher can only be in hot water here because he began to walk away before the train was cleared. He should've kept an eye on the girls and told them to clear off up until the train left the platform fully.

One of the scariest things in my time on the railway was that the new, or refurbished trains were usually built in such a way that the Guard was UNABLE to "Look Out" as we pulled away. Even if the dispatcher had still been there, with a train built like that, or a DOO one, by the time he contacted the Signal Box it'd be too late. This has happened a good few times on 375s/377s, which ironically have Guard's door controls on the Second Man's side of the cabs. But, spiteful SouthEastern, and Southern, DO NOT ALLOW the Guards to use them. The refurbed 508s and 313s have an arrow switch on their door control panels which opens and closes the cab doors for Driver or Guard, but again, since the refurb, the unit will not move unless ALL doors are shut. Now with the supposedly inferior old stock, or the newer builds as originally done, 313's etc, the dispatcher would hold two arms up, or give a red with his Bardic, DING on the bell by the Guard and train stopped, if he hadn't done so already. Glad I'm retired.

Why do alot of people in the comments keep missing the point with these safety films? They're mainly used as training videos for railway staff. It doesn't matter if there's continuity errors with the locations, the TOC's or even the sounds... what matters with these safety films is that they show railway trainees what can happen if they get the job wrong. A production company would hire a location, a filming crew and some actors to put these films together (one of the actresses in this particular clip being Maddy Hill, best known for her role as Nancy Carter in EastEnders and paramedic Ruby Spark in Casualty). I myself have watched many similar clips (some being far more graphic than this particular clip) when I was on my training course for a British train operating company... many clips I watched during training showed other TOC's and types of traction which are in a completely different part of the country. But that didn't matter... because the point was to be shown the nature of an event/incident, and the circumstances which led to that event/incident taking place. Yes, I notice the continuity errors too, but that's not the point... the purpose of the video is to highlight the dangers of a situation if staff don't do their job properly. The situation depicted in these films can happen anywhere, at any time, to anyone, if the staff become complacent. On some occasions, those involved in real-life incidents take part in the production of these safety films, in the hope that others learn from their mistakes. In these films, yes its only acting and its fictional, but it's based on real-life incidents... unfortunate events have happened in real-life, which has led to these films being produced for training purposes with railway staff. If there's continuity errors with the locations, the TOC, the wrong traction motor sounds, the wrong announcements for a particular station, none of that matters, because that's not the point with these safety films. My apologies for the rant, but alot of people keep missing the point!

Why this happened: 1 - Guard wasn't looking out of his cab window 2 - Dispatcher left the platform before the train fully left the station 3 - Girls were messing around then pushed the girl to the train, resulting in her falling in the gap 4 - Even after she fell off the platform, there was no communication to stop the train (either by Dispatcher raising both arms/red on baton or Guard using signal bell once or slamming on the E Brakes (no you dont need a master key in to apply brakes)) #keeptheguardonthetrain

IF shisa kanko were the industry standard here, i very much doubt this incident would have occurred. As an ex RO2 i stood and watched trains out of the platforms until the tail was past the ramp, but because there is no rigid working practice in the UK ( shisa kanko ) i can see why the occasional 'slip' happened. i witnessed the most idiotic behavior from rail passengers, example: the time some 'suit' who couldn't get to the station on time to be sure of catching his train, missed it, but rather than wait for the next one, he ran along the platform and jumped through an open door droplight - his legs were momentarily dangling out of the window as the train was picking up speed. Someone must have pulled the fool inside, but these are the kinds of mindless idiocy people will do on public transport. In my working experience, train travellers are about the worst for this behaviour followed by bus/coach passengers. ( i was also a PCV driver, so i encountered the public on this job too ) Btw, there SHOULD have been a gaurd on the train who would have watched his train as it departed - i did not note one in this re enactment.

This is why we need platform edge doors.
@williamhuang8309
@williamhuang8309 2 года назад
Unfortunately, due to the massive variation in rolling stock, this isn't really practical, since different types of stock have doors placed in different locations. Different types of rolling stock also have a different number of doors, for instance, a Javelin on SouthEastern has 2 single doors near the ends of the carriages, while Networkers and Electrostars have two double doors closer to the middle of the carriage. Installing platform screen doors to work with different types of trains would be difficult since the door system would need to read the position of the doors of the train, and then open the doors accordingly. You could also go the cheap route and install lifting barriers that prevent people from falling onto the tracks, but those wouldn't protect against scenarios where someone was messing around the side of the train.
@pikachu8508
@pikachu8508 2 года назад
While this is true for most National rail stations, But for metro services like the Tube, they often operate one rolling stock on each line and, PED would be very effective in preventing passengers and belongings from falling on the tracks that can cause major disruptions and delays. The only two problem are curved platforms would make PED installation very difficult, and few stations share platforms with other rolling stocks from other lines or even mainline trains
@williamhuang8309
@williamhuang8309 2 года назад
@@pikachu8508 The JLE on the London Underground already has PEDs, but for some reason, the brand-new Northern Line Extension does not. I think it would be possible to install PEDs at most underground stations, but shared stations where the London Overground or even National Rail use the same platforms would cause problems. That being said, when new rolling stock is introduced on lines, they will need to be built to match the door pattern in the PEDs.

The dispatcher will blame herself for that for the rest of her life, and it isn’t her fault, it was that blonde woman’s fault because of she fell and dropped her on the floor and she died and I used to work on the railway. The train was clear when the workers was given, so this wasn't her fault. The dispatcher can only be in hot water here because she began to walk away before the train was cleared. She should've kept an eye out on the girls and told them to clear off up until the train doors are closing and left the platform fully in the train station there are many more important things to notice and learn from in this morning and night and all many people could pick up from it was the sound of the engine, wow! Love the way all the train spotters accidentally pushed on like there experts in the field of linesman she was trying to tell her to move back, and she was pushed accidentally by her. It was her fault all along. Always stand back from the moving train, always stand behind the yellow line why did a train sound like a Desiro Alice was trying to tell Janet to move back, and she was pushed accidentally by Janet. It was Janet's fault all along, well Alice was the guard that got killed because she pushed Janet and Alice fell in between the rail and the platform but I remember this from school when I started at Kentish Town..
