Question from the comments! "Is it OK to Wear Jewelry with a Kimono?"
It is perfectly ok to freely add accessories when wearing a kimono as everyday wear,
except for formal occasions such as weddings or funerals. Many Japanese too are concerned about the rules of the kimono, as some elderly stick to the traditional way of doing things.
It is true that kimono are gorgeous enough without other jewelry because they already have various accessories (obiage, obijime, obidome, and hair ornaments). But in the end, kimono is a kind of fashion, so it’s up to that individual to decide whether to add accessories.
However, necklaces are generally not recommended. This is because necklaces are originally accessories to make the chest area look beautiful, but kimonos are closed to the neck and can be fashionable enough by the color of the collar. Many people point out that adding a necklace might be a little too much.
However again it’s really up to each individual, and I personally believe that having fun wearing kimono is most important.
If there’s anything else you’d like to know about kimono, please let me know in the comments!

Many modern rules of kimono wearing were created during the Showa period, when kimono were mostly silk, made of complex weaves, and most often worn to formal events. If the accessories have sharp edges like diamonds and gemstones (jewelries of this period tend to be of this type), wearing such accessories on the hand may damage others' kimono if you're too close to other people. It is a form of care and concern to other people, and of course a mindset of not getting into trouble of having to compensate for others' damaged kimono.

I don’t care about them showing because they are not accessories, they are religious (one is a magatama from my sobo, and the other is Amida Butsu from my haha). I also wear mala bracelet from my sofu. I love having my family and religion represented on me when I wear traditional clothing, it makes me feel closer to my heritage.

I love how most countries like Japan love sharing their culture it’s really inspiring to see people sharing their cultures or enjoying another’s culture so sincerely. It’s honestly sad that here in the us we have a culture that hates sharing each other’s cultures because of “appropriation” and they can’t tell the difference between that and appreciation.

Fluctuations in the fashion and rules of kimono are always so fascinating! I agree that if you’re going to a formal event the rules surrounding the wearing of kimono should definitely be observed but for fudangi (daily wear) the rules are far more relaxed. Historically there have been several decades where having a necklace or lace color showing at the kimono collar was en vogue. During the Meiji era school teachers were seen wearing high collared lace shirts matched with kimono and in the sixties necklaces with kimono were seen worn by actresses such as Fujiko Yamamoto and Machiko Kyō and young woman looking to emulate them.❤

I always wear a hair flower and earrings with my yukata, especially during the few times I wear it during festivals. I also wear a string of rose quartz but I tend to put it underneath unless the yukata’s top half is simple. I recently found a yukata sewing pattern and I got inspired by a Cameroonian fashion designer who lives in Tokyo and started a kimono line featuring African fabrics. I’m hoping to get my design finished by my graduation day. Wish me luck! (Cameroon is my family’s home country so when my dad shared the fashion house, it made me happy)

I think wearing a necklace over the collar of a kimono would look kind of silly, but there is a necklace that I never, ever remove since it has great sentimental value to me. It is okay to wear it under the kimono, right?

Question: in japanese, is there a word different words to call a person base on their age? Like if you walking outside and some1 is older than you, what do you call them? Same scenario but what if they are younger? Or do I just ask for their name and use their name in a conversation instead? (Im sorry that my English is bad.)

Sometimes I see people from lands with centuries of history wearing what their ancestors wore. A kilt, a certain vest, some cloth over the shoulder. Americans tend to just put on clothes, baring ceremonies.

I have, in my experience, found the available range of kimono for guys… kinda boring? Mostly darker, more muted colours and without any kind of nice patterning. Is there any recommendations you can have for more interesting kimono fashion for men, while still staying respectful? They’re also usually almost twice the price of the options for women! What’s up with that??
