So glad you’re keeping the VW, and fair play for being so honest. So many creators out there that would try and sweep this under the carpet. Looking forward to seeing it on one of your tours in the future.

I've got one like yours. 522000 km on her. Orange oil light came on today on start up. Put a new oil sensor switch in and fresh oil change. Light is still on. Thing is with the ignition on, before flicking to start,...the red oil light flicks over to orange??.. ..

Never buy a car with an engine that has a wet belt system. Who on earth thought that running a rubber belt in oil must be mad.

Never even knew they had one until this happened. At least I know now and it didn’t happen in the middle of the Sahara

that's why the correct oil is critical in these type of engines

Be an EGR Valve delete (and remap to wipe it off the system) if I were in your shoes with the engine out. Less sh** to go wrong with I'd be doing it. Least then you'd know that that engine and system is as reliable as you can get it. Still learnt a new thing with those engines having a Wet Belt oil pump drive.

Hmmm. Keeping driving with flashing oil light is not a great idea...

Sadly you were advised poorly. Any time oil pressure actually drops enough to turn on the oil light you are doing damage. It may have been a faulty sensor but my advice would have been not to drive it until it was changed because of the potential consequence of low oil pressure is too high. Sadly for you, it wasn’t the sensor.

My Audi TTs had the oil light flash up. The specialist dropped the sump and found the end of the dipstick partially blocking the pick up. To save money the engine manufacturers added a plastic level indicator on the end of the dipstick - over time this has deteriorated and broken off. I tried to get a full metal equivalent but in the end I had no option but to replace it with the same part.

had a similar problem with my old Au Ford . mine was timeing chain guide big chunks blocking the oil pickup . then they would fall off

turbo's are probably toast too if you had no oil pressure. Shame.

It is rebuildable, if you switched it off straight away the crank can be recut and oversized bearings fitted, one conrod will be fucked as well though.

Sounds like a design and manufacture problem. If it’s a known problem, VW should repair it or receive the consequence of brand and market failure.

Despicable engine design that feature. But these are the engines that have big power potential because all the parts are uprated compared to previous generations. Darkside did a chat on how the power goes up beyond expectations.
