Today I'm talking about what it was like for me to start medical school with only 2 college science courses to my name. That's right, TWO! Hit play to find out which ones they were and leave a comment telling me about what you studied in college, I gotta know!

Hey! I'm Ashley, a UBC Kinesiology alumni and a current UBC Nursing student. I am writing the MCAT in August and am looking forward to applying to schools across Canada! Technically Kin covered quite a few sciences - more so A&P, bio, gen chem, biomechanics, and social sciences. I have been self-studying the other sciences, like orgo, biochem, physics, etc. It is definitely way more stressful to do so but not impossible. I'm taking nursing to gain clinical experience and boost GPA a bit, and I am evening considering being an NP! Yay non-trad! Keep on making great videos :)
@Medumentary
@Medumentary 6 лет назад
I LOVE that! UBC is the only residency program I'll likely apply to next year in CaRMS - slim shot but I'm going for it anyway. Way to hustle and study ORGO on your own!! That is GIRL POWER right there!! Also, my mom is an NP and absolutely loves it. I think it's a great alternative to the MD route with plenty of autonomy and positions especially in BC/Vancouver. NPs are HUGE for compensating for the GP shortage in Canada (again, particularly in BC). Good luck with your MCAT :)

I love your videos they are so inspiring and helpful!! I am a psychology major and just recently came to the conclusion that I wanted to go into medicine. I haven't taken any serious science or math classes. What do you think about Pre med post bacc programs? do you think its even worth it to spend 2 years doing that and getting the required science classes? Should i maybe just take some science classes at a Junior college? do most US and Canadian medical schools have science pre reqs?
@Medumentary
@Medumentary 6 лет назад
Hey Grace thank you sooo much for watching!! I think the first thing you should do is reach out to the admissions offices of some medical schools you're interested in a applying to. They can direct you and let you know what they require of their applicants regarding pre-reqs & other application must-haves. Every school is different. I would recommend doing this INSTEAD of going to your current college advisor, as you may be given misinformation that can be discouraging & we don't want that! Most (if not all) Canadian & US med schools require science pre-reqs + the MCAT. I believe there is one school in Canada that does not require the MCAT but I can't remember which one.

I couldn't sleep all night few days ago thinking that I want a meaningful career and would like to become a doctor. @Medumentary
@Medumentary 6 лет назад
Man I wish I had some podcast recs, if you ever find any you actually like, tell ME! Honestly, the few months before starting should be spent relaxing. There is very little that you will learn in such a short period that will actually help you long term, because the material is so fast paced. The best thing you can do for yourself is to rest now to avoid burnout later. Prophylactic Netflix episodes #5 QD x 90days R1.

No science background is required in Switzerland to study medecine, however you have to either pass an entrance exams at some universities or you can go to a university having hard exams (80 fail-rate) the first and second year, it’s up to you. I will have a lot on my plate in september 🙈

I graduated from phlebotomy school in 2014. It was a 3 month program here, they taught me everything I needed to know anatomy-wise and instrument-wise. There isn't really a heavy need for science behind it, just good patient care and sympathy. The biggest help is the clinical, the only way to learn to stick is to practice!
