Ever since my therapist told me that Jacob is the only one who makes mistakes, I ask myself "What Would Jacob Do?" and it's become a lot easier to quickly rule out the WRONG decision.
I want you to know, I read this before seeing his pants, and I imagined pants with Olive’s face all over them, because that seems like something he would also get. I was very confused where Kim Possible fit in
@@ancientbrassdragon2679 I had seen that the pants are olive(colour) and not olive(cat) and when i read this comment my mind STILL made olive cat pants.
My therapist has told me many times that even though Jacob is the only person who's ever wrong, it's still important to give him respect and kindness just like you give to yourself.
at 39:11 when Julia says "ya'll ready for this?" and immediately chokes but takes it in stride. this is a excellent example of why Secret Sleepover Society is my favorite stream.
I remember Julia being bummed that ppl didn't seem to like the Control streams as much, but I think these Returnal ones are proof that the game was not the problem and their streams as a couple will always get a stronger response than any solo streams. Not to say they aren't fun on their own ofc (in the words of Hot Jacob, "No, Julia Is My Favorite!") but just, y'know, views-wise or whatever This has been my petition for continuing the Control streams thanks for coming to my ted talk
That whole "you're the only one makes mistakes" bit reminds me of the "it's not normal to sneeze" bit from Dear John and Hank that DeepBlueInk animated.
The great thing about this game is that even if you know the "themes" of this game, there's still SO MUCH unknown! It still makes it fun to watch since there are so many unanswered questions and little details to see.
At 1:46:35 in the top left you can see that the hospitals Caduceus Staff is actually an Ouroboros, kind of.. instead of a circle, it's in a figure 8 or infinity symbol, but it is eating itself. I have my theories on this games meaning, but I'm hoping I'm wrong.

This game is a piece of art. Gameplay might not be anything groundbreaking, but controls are very responsive and satisfying; all the metaphoric references, lore and worldbuilding are compelling and the general art design is intricate and interesting. Also, something that often goes unsaid is how much the sound effects add to the immersion and general experience and Returnal does it in such a meticulous way that is, to me, a landmark to the gaming genre.
I've been playing surround sound in my living room and it's remarkable how much detail there is to the sound design (and how much they really tried to convey visually if you can't hear it). There's a ton I love about this game, "simple" and "short" as it seems on the surface.
This was something I didn't realize I needed today. A wonderful mix of very solid banter, some mental reflection on the side, and no pressure to do anything but vibe for a bit. Going through a bit of a time today, and the mental break with thought-homework for later worked nicely. Also, I feel the catto problems. One of our cats has near chronic issues and it's never fun. The things we do for love, right? ...G-get it? It's a Courage reference, just for Julia!
I hope your cat issues get less! And that tomorrow is a better day. Although, it is a Monday, so maybe I'll just wish you a generally better week, instead!
Jacob Drawfee - Has a job - cooks - plays video games - streams video games - practices his art - reads books - watches youtube videos - works out - has a social life - listens to podcasts - watches movies/series H O W ?
@@fableagain Are they made elsewhere? I wasn't aware, I just remember seeing a video about Theo Jansen like over a decade ago and falling in love with his creations
Thinking about the context of the game, and like, what do people think the "hole made for me (it wasn't made for her)" represents? Is it therapy? Or is it someone coming to take care of her? Or is it medication? Or is it all three by turns? Like, it's a device that puts her back together when she falls apart, but it was not designed for her, it just works coincidentally. Like from a gameplay perspective it makes sense, but like, they could have made it anything. Instead they made it a weirdly oversized person shaped hole that she has to squeeze herself into, and it snaps shut without regard for her wellbeing, so right at the end, every time, she has to yank her arm out of the way so it doesn't get crushed. It's dark, cramped, and imposing, operating without regard for the human using it, and all it does is spit her back out into the same mess that destroyed her before, with the same tools she had when she was destroyed. Better than starting from zero, sure, but like, still the same shit that beat her before. And, most importantly, each device only ever works once.
Also, every complex device requires her to stick her arm in it, which I find very interesting from context. The devices like like they are ready to rip her arm off, looking like a cross between a mouth and the legs of a spider or octopus. In order for her to progress, she has to do a thing that, by all appearances, is as likely to kill her as help her. She has to intentionally make herself vulnerable in this world that is demonstrably trying to kill her.
(tw:depression, self-harm) I haven't played the game and my only knowledge about it depends on SSS streams on it so far but I wanna come in with a 4th take: the hole might represent depression? Depression serves an evolutionary purpose, it's designed to shut us down and prevent us from wasting energy. It's a coping mechanism triggered by our brain that's supposed to help us but it usually doesn't because it's a maladaptive strategy. (the hole not being the correct size?) It helps us adapt into it instead of breaking free from the problem. It's famously described as a black hole you fall into (like the hole Selene enters). When you "fail", you'll likely fall back into it. The hole working only once might refer to a failed suicide attempt, returning you to your bad mental state but your second attempt might be the last one. It might be a stretch but this is my 32 cents on the matter.
To the "you can't put something in your face hole and your butt hole at the same time, that's just physics" statement. I contest that my mishearing of that is the solution to the face/butt hole paradox. I misheard "[...] can't [...] just physics" as "[...] can [...] just dicks". Here's hoping this hits.
If Jacob hasn’t already read “The invisible life of Addie Larue” I highly recommend it and it made me think that he’d really like it (french cursed women, bi mcs, New York life, bookshops, local cat, tragedy, hot demons)
I absolutely agree with jacob about the going into space, like i wouldn't like being up there, i like the earth, there's something really cold about the livelessness of space that is very off-putting, i like seeing people, animals, trees, plants, i like the sounds and the smells of earth. Going to mars or the moon ? That feels so far and estranged to me, i feel like i would panic
ik some people don’t like to watch julia play FPS adjacent games but GOD it’s so satisfying, this game has such amazing visuals and unique and interesting boss fights and she’s genuinely so skilled at it… it feels like “we have speedruns at home” but in a good way, like it’s obv not a speed run but just watching someone competent and comfortable w the game showcase some of the fights
Do you remember all of them? Could save me some trying to find the spot. I know I've already read some of them, and I remember Piranesi and This Is How You Lose The Time War were two. Skie mentioned Monk and Robot. Were there others?
I looove these streams, they're so chill and intriguing. & I like the way Julia plays, because she seems like she has a lot of fun. That's why I like watching SSS.
the amount of thought put into this game is so impressive, especially in the references to greek mythology to communicate the lore subtlely (i looked most of this stuff up so it might not all be entirely correct but still) atropos - one of the fates, responsible for cutting the string and ending a mortal's life, represents permanence and inflexibility, which makes sense with the theme of the game and the stuff selene is going through helios and selene - helios (sun god) and selene (moon goddess) are siblings in greek mythology. gives the audience a subtle hint about the story algos - pain. like i looked it up and this word just means pain in greek. i think it's also the physical embodiment of pain in greek mythology tower of sisyphus - sisyphus's whole punishment is eternally trying to roll a boulder up a hill, but it falls every time he gets near the top of the hill. a never-ending struggle, aligns with the theme of the game
I know this is somewhat old, but I'd like to add that Sisyphus is punished because (among other things) he cheated death. Several times, depending on who you ask. Which is why he is being punished like that. There is no escape from death. It's a never ending and fruitless struggle.
10:15 So far (some of) Jacob‘s ultimate hard stances are: 1. Nothing should live underground 2. No one should tell anyone anything … The only logical conclusion one can draw from these statements is that Jacob Drawfee personally despises Hobbits. Very disappointing tbh :(
i know this vod is 5 months old but julia jokingly saying "the only people that deserve rights are guns" reminded me of a real stick i saw on a pick up truck that said "firearm rights are human rights". i live in canada.
Was thinking at the beginning of this that Julia would maybe die a lot more in the game if it had a lot of platforming in it but since it doesn’t and she a gamer she’s totally crushing this tough as hell game….then we got to laser hell…lolol
i genuinely believed when i was a wee lad (before i went to school) that every continent was a separate planet and the plane would fly through space to travel the "world" 😅
Prequel to Legends & Lattes by Travis Baldree has been announced and is available for pre ordered through Barnes & Noble! Should be coming out in November.
a setting that makes a mic pic up BEST what is FURTHEST away from it is unironically fascinatingly cursed. like imagine it just picks up the collapsing of a sun at the edge of the universe. cause, hey, that was furthest from here! listening to the people streaming? nah, you just hear your own conversation you are currently having with a friend play through your laptop, cause you were farther away from the mic than the streamers. you try to hear Julia and Jacob, but the noise on the New York street below is always louder. cursed, truly cursed.
Something interesting about the story Jacob read it's written like a novel but did she say before that was her log book just thought it was interesting
This is one of thaoe games that reminds me you can build a good compelling dtory around any gameplay, such as rougue like or bullet heaven, but also in a slew of storyless sirvivor/bullet heavens id love to see a story based one of those
You think the reason they have all those rad lasers is the sentients were just having, like, sick raves all the time? Maybe the aliens were laserproof and just loved to party.
Jacob, think you would enjoy Atomicrops. It's a bullet hell game mixed with a farming game. It sounds bad on paper, but it's a favorite game for at least 3 members of my family. I was reminded because you can trade your health for damage sometimes. It has a bit of a learning curve at the start (just because it's a bullet hell), but then you get better pretty quick.
These streams have just made me wish I could play Returnal for myself so badly, it seems like a perfect game for me, but no PS5 and I highly doubt that my laptop would be able to run it, it struggles to run more demanding games that released after 2018-2019 ;~;
I’m pretty sure the subscriber ‘gayashyuck’ was supposed to be read as ‘gay as hyuck’ not ‘gay ash yuck’ or ‘gay ashy uck’ but I’m not them so maybe I’m wrong 😂
This game is how I imagine3D Metroid in 2023 should be. As much as I love Metroid Prime, this gameplay just makes me wish a faced paced 3D Metroid existed.
53:27 idk if u guys read graphic novels but! i love k oneills books! i also don’t know if u guys like book youtubers but it seems like based off of jacobs books he like he would like allisonpaiges!
So over the course of these last few Returnal streams I've realized... this game is just 3D Binding of Issac with less memes. Not that that's bad! I have hundreds of hours in Issac. It's just kind of funny.
I love that Julia is playing this on stream and encouraging others to try it out, but as someone who 100%'ed Returnal, holy hell she's ignoring like half of the game's mechanics and it's almost painful to watch at time. I like to boot up my own game and do runs parallel to her's while listening to what's going on, and pause/rewind when stuff happens. If anyone who is watching is wondering about various mechanics or things you see that don't seem to be acknowledged, feel free to ask me and I'll try and answer in a way that won't spoil anything that hasn't been covered on stream at this point in the game. I really hope she gets Nemesis next time, because that features one of the best HOLY SHIT moments ever.
Jacob covers this in their first Returnal stream, I think, but Julia has a special gaming style where she just completely misses, ignores, or forgets about like half the mechanics of a game
