Just a background. Besides the Kanaks and Caldoche (French migrants), there are also significant populations of Tahitians, Wallisians, Vietnamese and Indonesians. Under the Noumea Accords, Kanaks and only non-Kanaks who lived in the territory before 1998 are allowed to vote. This has created a significant number of non-voters. There were three independence referenda but the Kanaks boycotted the last one because they were mourning their people who died in Covid-19. French made the mistake of disregarding Kanak concerns and proceeded with plans to amend the constitution to increase the number of non-Kanaks allowed to vote. Kanaks fear being marginalised like the indigenous peoples of NZ and Australia.

Wven if they get independence the kanak would lose to the french and vietnamese descendants living there for many generations. Most of them never lived in France. Also they have most money and most guns. The only way kanak can win is if France actively forces the non Kanak to leave. Also most older Kanak want France to remain because France is paying their pensions and hospital bills. If the french and vietnamese descendants would leave the island the nickel industry isn't enough to cover all the costs and taxes so all the Kanak would become unable to afford the stuff the french government is paying for them (school, university, hospitals, pensions, etc...) without the french it would very easy for a group like Wagner to take over and they aren't as soft as the french with rebels.

So, maybe France should have done what the British did in Australia with the aboriginal …

With some variations you will meet the Kanak condition in every so called "French oversea territories". As rightly mentioned in the vdo this phrase is the modern name for colonies. Living in Martinique (Caribbean) I can see the predicament of not being an independent and sovereign state : in fact you don't have a say on anything that matters ! It's like being considered as a minor in perpetuity. Moreover, the French have a very centralized system of government. Even though we are supposed to have now some kind of local government actually its power is very limited : we don't decide income taxes, property rights (very important as anyone from the EU can come and buy land giving way to speculation) ; our airport is branded "international" but flight rights are given by Paris, etc. And personally I think being under French administration prevents Martinique from real development and opportunities. As ONU recommand to support indigenous people selfdetermination and as truth and reconciliation commissions move us forward those harmful colonial experiences into a post-colonial world where people are struggling worldwide to support their traditional cultures and identities against NGOs and harmful financial politics, the armed response from France is a proof that its claims in colonial power aren't suited for the 21th century. Diplomatic solutions are essential and must absolutely be prioritised. Statist violence is never, never was and never will be a democratic solution in any case. Kanak people has the right to be freed from Chinese, Russian and French greed and agressive geopolitics. Investments should be made in peace and sustainability so we can achieve peace and freedom though cultural expression worldwide in our own autodetermined terms. We must listen to kanak people demands and support their mobility into universities and francophone countries. We must respect their freedom of association with other global south neighbors and their economies with progressive mesures. Kanak people should be allowed to access chinese and russian languages classes and engage in universities as international students. Tourism should be fair and support ecology.
