The bottom line is that the AB's no longer have the forward depth to dominate World Rugby as in the past. The Boks, France and Ireland have much more depth and physically bigger and stronger forwards. This fact is always avoided by so called rugby experts.

We never have had the size, we have always relied on fitness & ball skills but the game is very different now with the ball being in play for far shorter periods of time & bigger forwards only needing to be fit enough to play 40-60 mins of a game. The Boks 7-1 reserve split is a classic example of how to negate the speed & fitness of the NZ game, they are able to bring on virtually a whole new forward pack at half time. We dont have the player pool or the size to play that kind of game, in particular at lock where we produce very few players of that height.
@corny165
@corny165 Год назад
I'd go further than that to be honest. I'm Irish. As long as I can remember I've always known the NZ'ers to have superior ball skills in the forwards. Better than everyone in fact not just Ireland. I can't say that now. The Irish lads as a group have better handlers, passers and are infinitely better carriers because of superior footwork. It is really noticeable how much better our front row is than yours for example.

@@JTAIT-b7g but the ball is in play much longer these days - there was a study done on this - i'm quoting from the rugbypass website: "let’s put ball in play time into context. 38 minutes might not sound like a lot, but it’s a huge amount more than we had it in the past. The 1995 World Cup averaged just under 26 minutes of ball in play time. The 2019 World Cup had the most ever at 34 minutes. If current club trends continue into the international game, the 2023 World Cup should eclipse that by at least 10%" in some ireland games e.g. v France in the 6N the ball was in play well over 40 minutes

We have some serious issues with this team. For one, our game plan seems to be based around kicking and hoping that the opposition make a mistake. Teams that have the calibre like the French, won't give us opportunities from mistakes. The game plan is so unimaginative. Take the Fijians. They play like "Fiji". We don't play "AB's" rugby anymore. We're trying to be something we're not. I used to love our attacking mindset. Where has that gone? Secondly, our bench doesn't have the impact anymore. Other teams roll on their reserves and have a real impact ie. the Boks! We have players like Finlay Christie coming on that offer nothing, and don't get me started on why we need a winger on the bench. Where the hell is DMac? Have they sent him on a tour to the French Riveria? Sure, he has some moments of madness, but he can also come on and change a game. I also think he's matured a lot over the past couple of years since his season in Japan. I'd prefer to leave out Beaudie, put Jordan to fullback or start DMac there. If we don't change this up, we're on our way home after the quarters. At least at that point, we can put the Foster era and the "Old Boys Club" behind us.

I agree. But I'll also put forward that the real weakness in this team is the pack; traditionally they would lift themselves to gain parity with the big packs of the world - even the Boks. I've never seen an ABs pack get repeatedly bullied like this. Is this just the result of the SA leaving SuperRugby?
@albertseegers3074
@albertseegers3074 Год назад
The AB problems start with the no. 9 is not cleaning the ball fast, and then it gives the opportunity to defend them before the win any ground. The next problem is they pass the ball out, not looking if the receiver is in a good position to use the ball and in a position to pass it to a next player. The player who kicks the ball in his 25m must kick it out so that the team can get the defensive line and try to steal the line out ball. The AB must get the ball as fast to the wing with a position where the wing can beat his man. Now, no. 9 kick the ball away and the no. 12 trying too much running against the opposition instead of passing the to no. 13

@JTAIT-b7g Год назад
@@elduderino3236 Nope nothing to do with the Saffas leaving SR even though they seem to want to take the credit! NZ has never been the biggest pack but have always been the fittest. The new law changes have seen the game slow down significantly with the ball only actually being in play for between 30-35 minutes, this has reduced the need for "80 minute" fitness and resulted in bigger players who only need to be fit enough to play 40 minutes in some cases. NZ used to run teams off their feet & put them away in the last 20 minutes, you would see it happen over & over. The game has changed, fitness advantage has been negated, we will just have to follow suit & start to put more emphasis on size as opposed to fitness & ball handling skills.

We want them to be, and they historically have been, but we are now clutching at rainbows when we point to stats and say 'but we made the most gain line metres' or some other stat that suggests we should of, could of, but did not win. I have seen the Wallabies go down the same path of denying the reality of the results and speaking as if each loss is an aberration. In my opinion we were comfortably beaten albeit not until the second half, and lack the discipline and pressure skill set to be the best. I can only think of one or two players who are worthy of a World XV and some of our subs are not even close. Our old fragility under pressure we thought we had erased by winning two World Cups is reappearing but this time I am okay to recognise that we are a good team but not a great team. We deserve being fourth in the world and should expect to loose to France or South Africa or Ireland when we play them because they are better than us and higher in the rankings for a reason. Our bench changed the path of the game with also a much better performance of Jalibert in the second half. Personnaly, i prefer McKenzie over Mo’unga to lead the offensive game. Barrett did a great game with Telea but Ramos was also great and i think we won the kicking game. Maybe Barrett in flyhalf with Jordan fullback and Clarke in a wing is also an option? @@GunKaraka History shows that SR Aerotoa was constructed without SA, long before anyone knew whether or not SA would be back that year. We were excluded from the competition, as were Japan and Argentina. We had wanted Japan out because of the additional travel to that part of the world but we liked Argentina because of the RC. All three of us excluded and a new competition designed between NZ and Aus, with spots available for Pacific Island teams to form what we see as SR now. We were dumped, whichever way you want to cut it. We were never going to win more than the very occasional competition because the travel was debilitating. We were expected to tour 5 weeks without a break, often leapfrogging backwards and forwards over the Tasman in some intricate fatigue inducing dance, where a simple change of opponents for two of our teams could have prevented the extra travel - for instance Stormers play Reds, Chiefs, Brumbies while Lions play Crusaders, Brumbies, Chiefs; a swap of those last two games would result in less travel but we were constantly outvoted by NZ and Aus and just had to suck it up. This is not a whinge, this is just a synopsis of what often happened. But what we did have was big heavy forwards and playing against them toughened your lot up. Ardie Savea aside, in every game you have lost in the last 2 years, we simply do not hear the names of your forwards in the commentary, other than when they infringe.

There is a brilliant article on Rugbypass that looked at the mistakes that the AB's made against the French - and some of them were - arriving late to the breakdowns - not having enough men at the breakdowns - being monstered at the breakdown and losing the ball - kicking the ball away aimlessly and missing penalty kicks - attacking from deep and being neutralised on the halfway line. There was more but no side can win against any quality side when you are making such basic errors. I dont want to jump on the Fossie bandwagon - but I would've thought he would've sorted this out by now.

The only way back is if the selectors pick based on 'who's the best player in that position' and not favourites. DMac needs to be given a chance to start at 15 with Richie at 10. They could complement each other well, or he comes in that 23 spot. In the forwards it's a shame because the starting pack has only played together once this year and that was against SA in Auckland. So it should steady the ship when everyone is back in the pack. The Bench is where everything falls apart for me (the final 20 minutes of the match). Whitelock to move to the 19 spot (Vaa'i isn't at international level), Blackadder comes straight into that 20 spot for me (good mongrel), Roigard at 21, David Havili at 22 and 23 is a toss up between power winger or a player who covers multiple positions (should be D Mac).

You have to put Ireland's win into perspective. Ireland looked slick against Romania which finished 2nd in the Rugby Europe qualification table behind Georgia. Romania got massacred by both Italy and Georgia by nearly 60 points and they even got beaten by abysmal USA by 30 points. Yes Ireland looked slick, much slicker than they did against Samoa two weeks ago or so but it did not look like an international game, it looked like a game of sparring partners to me so let's not get ahead of ourselves. The Boks will be the true indicator. The reason why Ireland fielded their strongest team comes down to bonus points and points average. Now for the All Blacks and the French, I would say ignore Italy at your own peril. The Italians have a strong forward pack, they are on an upwards trajectory after beating the likes of Wales (in the 6 Nations) and a Wallabies team that did not look like an A side to me. They play a simple rugby game plan and what will make the difference is execution. If you look at Italy's results since their win to Wales in Cardiff, they have improved so on any given day, an upset is always possible if things go their way the way it went for them in Cardiff. Wales 21 - 22 Italy (6N) Italy 49 - 17 Samoa Italy 28 - 27 Australia Italy 21 - 63 South Africa Italy 24 - 29 France (6N) England 31 - 14 Italy (6N) Italy 20 - 34 Ireland (6N) Italy 17 - 29 Wales (6N) Scotland 26 - 14 Italy (6N) Scotland 25 - 13 Italy Ireland 33 - 17 Italy Italy 57 - 7 Romania Italy 42 - 21 Japan Italy 52 - 8 Namibia (RWC)

Another good reason for Ireland fielding that team is the schedule, also the injury/suspension situation Ireland have Tonga next, then SA then Scotland. Romania could very well have been seen as a last warm up game before those three (no disrespect to Romania) Ireland only played 2 warm up games. Against England they didn't once try to play a set move, something very much associated with Ireland. Against Samoa, in torrential rain they tried (I believe) 4 kicks, very low for a very kick happy team and in such conditions It just seemed like they were holding back in the warm ups, knowing that they had over a month to go before SA, a month that would give SA, Scotland and Tonga plenty of time to prepare a strategy That may be wishful thinking but it would explain the limited game plans they brought to the England and Samoa games Then there's the fact that Sexton hasn't played rugby for 6 months. He needed minutes with the first team. Playing him with the second string wouldn't help his sharpness with the bigger games coming up

With respect to this point about gain-line percentages (20:55), here’s an interesting stat about the Springbok v Scotland game: “The Springboks made more metres, post-contact, (315) than Scotland carried with the ball in total (226) and were more than a second faster than Scotland on average for all of their rucks and the fastest speed they managed compared to any of their summer series games”. The game’s changed, gentlemen. It’s not about your gain-line, it’s about how much you can limit the opposition’s. The best teams in the world right now have an attacking defence, which is why South Africa’s rush defence (and to a lesser extent, France’s) is so effective. No longer can teams rely on cynical infringements on their line as a substitute for a good defence, nor a sole-reliance on attack to pull away in a game.

An absolute drubbing and frankly I expected the same against France and here we are… Lacking control, cohesion, a strong plan B, with some whack contestable kicking, and questionable selections too. Painful to watch right now. B.Barrett is in some very poor form and McKenzie should have already had game time at 15. Leicester F needs to be unleashed and Richie M needs to be given greater freedom with less playmaking interference from Barrett. T Vai should have had more time in the locks to develop, Roigard off the bench. The poor lack of control with ball in hand is so bad I’m struggling to see AB’s beat the top three of SA, France or Ireland… Fozzie’s reign has been been an unparalleled period of historic poor performances and bad bad results. Yes the problems start at the end of Hansen’s time but Fozzie was there with his hands in the pot and the AB’s needed fresh innovative eyes; enter Razor ASAP because the AB’s are falling behind

Jim, just a slight correction: It's to quickly communicate the level of fitness of a player on the field. IE. When the coaches think it's time for the player to come off, they'll show one colour. When they think a player is still good to go, they'll show a different colour, etc. The reason for the lights is because the crowds are so loud that it's difficult for them to hear one another over the noise sometimes. So rather than possibly getting the wrong call from the coaching box, they decided to fall back on the lights system. (This system was used by the Rassie team on a number of occasions in the past.) No one can "make" you believe whether this is true or not, but I'm just explaining that it's not a new thing for them.

All NZ pundits are building their theories around Mount Smart win against Boks. Thinking they still on the right track and thinking Frizzell is the answer based on 1 performance. Reality is Boks didn't show their cards, playing a rusty pack, not contesting even lineouts or breakdowns or upnand unders.

Hi Aotearoa Rugby Pod Boys, can you help explain the 12-7 penalty count vs Namibia in a game the ABs dominated on the scoreboard? Surely the team under the most pressure would concede more penalties?
@steventaumoepeau601
@steventaumoepeau601 Год назад
The All Blacks' attacking kicking game worked well initially, but they also needed plan B to ounter-attack. Running off the bigger French forwards was right, but they should have kept up the pressure during static plays at times with quick lineouts and tap-and-runs. This would have helped control tempo and momentum.
@twotwonz2288

If they can't focus on the game that's a poor excuse and they shouldn't be there. Giving away 5 penalties at an important time is not professional. They were not out played until the yellow card. And similar in previous game. Maybe the AB's should watch the England/Argentina game and notice the way the England beat Argentina with 14 men and NO Excuses!

I think Ireland can beat South Africa, but I also think South Africa can beat Ireland. These guys talk about the kicking and they are not wrong, but it was Rassie's call to go for the points from an area of the field outside of Manie's comfort zone and historically would have seen Frans Steyn step up. That kick was even outside Pollard's range as we saw in the RWC final (63rd minute) where he also did the classic short, left and low that you get from trying to kick too hard. That kick also broke Manie's rhyth for the next kick, for a similar position to his 3rd kick that sailed over the black dot. 100% in the Ireland game, that is going to the corner and for all his faults, Manie is good at finding the corner. Right now Rassie is playing game by game depending on the opposition. We played differently against Argentina (2nd game), Wales, All Blacks and Scotland. You can't point to something and say "that is how they will play" because even us fans don't know. The issue with Ireland for this tournament though is that they HAVE to beat South Africa because of the potential threat of Scotland a week later. Scotland should not beat them but stranger things have happened so it is a chance that they cannot afford to take. So South Africa, then Scotland, both big games, then straight into the QF. Unlike most other sides, they have pretty much 5 weeks of finals, not 3 and Sexton (and Ringrose and Sheehan) has to play them all.

You have nailed it. The clueless selectors didn't help themselves by picking 5 wingers and only 5 loosies either, which meant they had to select Vaai at 6. Also the selection of Vaai in the squad was a ridiculous one, he's a lightweight lock who may be ok in Super Rugby but he was exposed badly against SA and France. The guy has zero impact. While Patrick Tuipolotu isn't great, at least he brings a lot of physicality which Vaai simply doesn't.

In this form we will be knocked out of the 1/4 finals , we cannot best South Africa or Ireland . Injuries are telling , we are playing too much in our own half because our No 10 is not in control of his game . We are losing the breakdown and collisions ! Most of all we need to play our style of Rugby ... play it close , do the hard yards and earn the right to get it wide . Dam Italy may take us down . Would be happy to be proved wrong !

Taking nothing away from Ford, the man is a genius and has been underrated for far too long: but I don't know if England can resort his dropkicks to get them through the tourney. It's more of a surprise attack. Janie De Beer used them to put England to the sword in '99 but in the next game, the Aussies were ready for it and SA couldn't use them effectively. Not sure they make it deep into the tournament.

In the end we might be surprised by who wins it but the top 4 teams to win this cup are Ireland, France, SA and New Zealand. As the pundint said, it is about the small margins and historically the All Blacks have always won those margins/battles. That is no longer the case and teams now have that belief (especially in the NH) that they can be beaton. That being said as a french supporter the All Blacks are special and can win it all because they do have that DNA. We won the first battle but a long way to go for everyone.

I think one of the biggest differences in the games earlier in the year (yes weak teams, SA was foxing or underdone) was that BB wasnt crowding Richie, BB was staying our of 1st receiver and Richie was running the show. Recently the last 2 losses on top of the forwards being monstered and terrible selections in the back row its been so messy with BB again. That and our bench - its easily the weakest we have every had and worst of the top teams.

I've been in NZ for a year, 2 things surprised me. NZ schools rugby are not a big event. In SA the biggest first team game attracts 25 000 supporters, the average game probably about 1000 to 5000 depending on the occasion. Every young boy dreams of one day playing for his school's first team, it's an honour. I watched the Wellington College first team, there were about 100 people, this school produced the 3rd most AB's. Secondly I never, not even now during the WC, see supporters on weekends wearing AB jerseys. In SA they have Bok Fridays where people wear Bok gear to work and kids to school. That creates a passion for the team and boys want to be a Bok. If NZ do the same, less kids would play basketball and soccer.
