hello, i am sorry to bother you but i am unable to enter the competition because of gleam theamself. the reason for that is that as i try to give gleam my name and e mail it tells me "has already been used to log in to Gleam. Please login to your linked account: " where facebook is sited as a linked account but here is the problem: i don´t have a facebook account (deleted it years ago since i don´t like the type of things that this site does). after that i thought i could try making myself an gleam account.... well it did not helped me. so what should i do?
For those curious how I got a hold of one of these: My friend Cube April managed to buy it off the store, but she told me she didn't want to keep it, both because she ultimately does not like how the foiling looks, and also feels angry at how it was implemented. She asked if I wanted one. I don't want one either, but I needed one for the review. So I paid her what she bought it for, used it for the review, and am giving the planeswalkers away to a subscriber. She also contributed to some of the development of this script, since she had a lot of strong feelings on this product.
this is what we call collective action. you and april took a shitty action by a corporation and together maximized it's positive impact for the community.
I thought I lost my magic cards many years ago after moving to a new house when I was a kid. However after a second move as a kid, getting married and moving an additional 3 more times and after being married for 9 years I found most of my old magic cards stuffed in a box inside another box. My wife told me to sell them. After looking through them and getting choked up with the memories and nostalgia. I was looking on line to price my cards and stumbled upon your RU-vid channel. Your first video I watched was about your story of you and your friends old magic cards. It made me decide to keep mine and get back into the magic community. I have bought some more recent sets and played a couple of games. This Friday I’m looking forward to my first FNM draft event. Thank you for your channel and what you do. I almost threw away a very important part of my youth and memories of gaming and friendship.
See, this is why I watch Prof's videos. Is he opinionated? Yes, of course. But he doesn't pretend that he isn't, and looks at something objectively when he says he will. He gives the product its chance despite his own opinions. Take notes and show evidence, kids.
+Antioch Archives You know, it's interesting you mention that. I tend to keep my MTG RU-vid circle pretty focused and I stepped outside of that focus a couple times to find entire channels and commentators constantly badmouthing the Professor. I know how the internet works, of course, but it still amazed me that so many people would be so vehemently against such an objective and fair review channel. It's like they believed he has more power than he actually does. Totally confusing.
This product is ridiculous!! I will admit the planeswalkers are awesome! Idk why I'm mentioning it on this video but your video on magic and depression changed my life. As soon as I realized and accepted that I felt the same way as you(buried in books and bullied) and saw that you are a happy successful person I had new hope for my future. I finally got a counselor and medication. I watch all of your videos and it always makes me happy to tune in and see what new magic things there are! Thank you Prof
I stand by my opinion that these products should be LGS- and Preorder-only. 1 Preorder tied to the DCI-card would be an incredible boon to anyone but the scalpers. Players could ensure they get their exclusive product (and the price alone pretty much dictates a certain amount of exclusivity). LGS owners would probably get an influx of players. And WotC gets the biggest gain out of all of them: Data directly from their customer base. Also by preordering the product distribution globally becomes an easier to manage endeavor and more revenue from the product.
I stand by my opinion that it was most likely a decision pressured heavily by Hasbro and that of course these similar to from the vault should be LGS only
Felipe Rodrigues Like now, just not dependent on the lags and crashes of an outdated site, but on your own decision to stay informed and go at least once in the time frame to your LGS?
That will be a problem no matter what, and if it's announced ahead of the preorder period you have time to plan for and get ready for it, so it would out the same either way.
TheTrueLeafless What’s your guarantee the stores just wouldn’t flip them on eBay for huge markups? Or piece them out? You’d hear “Sorry we didn’t get our allotment”...
I always appreciate what you have to say, Prof! I've said myself that there is nothing wrong with the product itself, but the distribution method is "not cool, dude."
You really are a great part of this community, Prof. I hope that you continue to contribute in any way possible and thank you for your generosity to the Magic community!
while watching a number of these types of unboxing videos, I am amazed at how many people that don't understand how to cut the plastic off of the box. you are the only person Ive seen do this without even coming close to damaging the box. kudos.
My personal thoughts were hasbro we’re behind this. Magic has always been a buy from store-retailer type of company but with hasbro making everything digital and pretty much culling game stores it is no surprise they went with the quick money route
Are the Share Holders, VCs, whoever is truly in charge of The Wizards of the Coast in any way connected or linked to Hasbro? I wonder what money move was in play here...
Ahh see, I didn't know that. That makes a LOT more sense now, I figured it was something like that though. WotC doomed their company the day they got into business with Hasbro.
You really think it would have been easier to purchase in a local shop. I tried to order it, but my order never went through. A couple days later I got an email to purchase a box. No sweat. I made the opurchase. I didn’t even have to camp in front of a store.
Professor, I was able to buy the Guilds of Ravnica : Mythic Edition at GP Montreal (Canadian GP location) for 383$ CAN or 295,55$ US. The problem was that they said they will be only online sell at Hasbro but 1 to 2 week before GP Montreal, I got somebody linked me to the web site to buy the Mythic edition and to pick it up at GP Montreal. They said to be an online ONLY and you couldn't buy it at the GP. But after I was at the GP, I saw that they changed their mind and they will sell the Mythic edition at 380$ CAN on site! That was just ridiculous. Anyway, I don't know why they always have a change of heart and keep magic players confuse about their product. Nice review by the way and keep doing that. Many magic the gathering players have question unanswered by Wizard but you have the answer!
I'm from Quebec province and was wondering how much it would cost in $CA because of exchange rates and taxes. 250$ US to 380$CA! 380$ for this seems a lot expensive to me for this product. Anyway, glad for you that you could afford it. Hope you enjoyed your purchase.
The problem is. It become appealing to resell it for 600$ to repay the credit card and have a bonus to repay for my essence and food to go to that GP Or just open all of them and put the planeswalker in many of my commander decks. Thought choice.
I just came across this channel and have thoroughly enjoyed the content so far. I appreciate your insight into these kinds of promotions/sales and the fact that you do more than just tear them apart if you don't agree with them, you are willing to offer solutions that you think best for the community. Keep up the good work!
Just wanted to thank you for the content. Going through a rough patch in life... unemployment. Your channel and the entire MTG community have been something that helps get my mind off things and unwind. Always look forward to your uploads. Thank you!
I was a magic player until about three years ago. And even though I don’t play anymore I like to watch your channel. Your content is great for the community and I feel that this would have helped me a lot before I would have stopped. For those who don’t know a lot about prices you break it down. This is great for beginners who don’t know where to spend there money in the best ways. Thanks for helping the magic community.
I can't say I like the animated intro, but man was that a good video. I feel that every point you hit upon was super valid, and you gave WotC something to think about at the end. Great job on the script, to both you and April (and whomever else worked on it).
Yet another great review, thanks Prof. I also wanted to say it is awesome that you are doing a giveaway, just shows how much you care about your viewers.
Damn, I'm new to Magic & this channel. I had no idea how big it was, already nigh on 40,000 people have signed up for the competition. Good work professor.
As a resident of Denmark, product availability such as this infuriates me beyond words. Thank you Good Sir, for your honest view on this issue. I do so love your candor.
Thank you for the chance to get these planeswalkers Prof. I would never get the chance to actually get any of these and your give-away is extraordinarily generous. From the Vault foiling is personally a favorite style of mine so it is really awesome to be given a chance to get these. Agree 100% with the execution of the cards. I would've loved these to appear as Masterpieces. Hopefully WotC gets it right the next time they do this. Keep up the great work!
Right when you were saying how the website was laggy my video froze XD At first I thought it was done for comedy until I noticed the timer wasn’t moving anymore. Great coincidence ^^
I dont usually comment on RU-vid videos but this video made me have to comment. Prof you are such an amazing person! You always try and give back to the community and you arent afraid to stand up for whats right. Ive got a lot of respect for you man, keep doing what you are doing! And thank you!
Prof your videos are very incite full and have helped me through a-lot of my product buying experiences Watching your videos and seeing your dech techs and all sorts of influential inputs and ideals have helped my love for the game of magic as a whole. I am a big time supporter and my name is Joseph Luteran. Keep up the good work.
Your reviews are fantastic as always, unbiased as possible and even when there are your biases when it comes to supporting Local Game Stores it's very clear and doesn't hamper the very professional and well written review. You may become heated, but that's just because you're passionate lmao. Good shit my dude.
I highly agree with everything said about these cards and the set as a whole. As nice as the cards look, despite the foiling, there was a lot to be desired in terms of how the whole thing was handled. Wizards of the Coast has been absolutely struggling with MTG products as of late, with their latest Commander sets being very lack-luster, almost all requiring major upgrades to be viable in the current game settings, major tournament issues, and then this PR disaster to boot. I love the artwork on the new set, but the game is getting ridiculously expensive these days to keep up with.
That set actualy contains 2 plainswalkers i would have used for my deck and my best friends deck. She almost died last march of medicine poison trough doctors error giving her bad medicine combination. Lucky she survived and today we can still play magic together. It would have been awesome if we would have won those cards but sadly i only discovered the contest today :( Hope to see some cool stuff in the future, lots of love to u and thank you for making this channel. Please keep up the good work!!!!!
Hey Prof. Love your content, especially the deck techs and videos like this. They've really helped me grow as a magic player. Thanks for all the information your videos provide
professionnal content, high quality, critical review, not scared of his opinion... And a giveaway! no wonder prof has the number one mtg channel on RU-vid
Very admirable thing to do prof. If I get my hands on a set I'll def hand a few out to the edh kids that can't afford expensive cards at my LGS just to lead by your example.
Not only is this an excellent quality video but what you did with your cards is freakin awesome and I respect the sentiment and motivation behind it, well earned sub from me, very helpful info and enlightening about the mtg franchise etc
I play commander and love to see different art and alternate foils, but Wizards has done such a bang up job of making new product I've stopped buying cards and almost stopped playing magic all together it's sad this was once my absolute favorite game
Mighty generous of you to send out those cards. I kinda wished wizards made them as the masterpieces of this set instead. That way we have a better chance of having more of these in the market
I was able to get one off the Hasbro site. Needless to say. Website did crash just within a few minutes of going on sale, and the next day a large group of orders got messed up and didn't go through. They had to lower the limit of boxes you could buy from 2-1. You also had to call Hasbro to reorder the box that you already ordered, but since there were so many people calling their communication system crashed and stayed that way for about 2 days. The employees were really nice though.
@@altosforteaquax5083 It's not about whether to buy or not, it's about being disappointed in the implementation of such glorious artwork. I personally don't have a huge problem with FTV foiling, but I would rather have matte versions of these cards - or at least have the option. Feels like the artist's work is being wasted on such a limited, controversial product.
John Salter There’s some cards that are with normal foiling process that are extremely muted or far too dark - I will agree with that, for sure. Also, I like the FtV Ancient Tomb and Platinum Angel for some reason.
Wow, I love the Professor. He does such a good job of presenting his facts and trying to give the benefit of the doubt. He should've been a judge or lawyer.
I bought (and received) my box, because I want Vraska and Teferi. I'll be playing Vraska this weekend (double-sleeved, ofc) and I'll be framing Teferi, because he looks great. I'll trade or sell the rest. All 8 of mine are completely flat out of the packs and if anyone is curious, I got very lucky and pulled 3 mythics out of the 24 boosters plus two Ravnica dual lands. The boxes will be down to $400 or less by December and if you like the foiling and want the cards, it'll be worth that price.
Great video as always. Hits all the right points and gives the product a fair review (as you always do). Two things that confuse me about this Mythic Box... 1) WOTC seems to have an issue with cards selling for more $$ on the secondary market and them not making any revenue off that. Their answer is to create these "premium" sets (incl. "masters", FTV, etc) and to sell them for a...well...premium. However, when any of these sets are well received, demand goes to outrageous amounts on the secondary market...($500+ for this set itself). They are literally creating the issue they are trying to combat. Why not just make a buttload of these, sell them at a high price point, and make even more money??? yes, collectors' values in these cards wont grow as much...but isn't that the point for WOTC....get the $$$ before the secondary market...if they overprint, there is no secondary market overinflation (yes yes, i know the cons with overprinting) i just think its shortsited on their part to sell so few , yes they sold out...but they could have sold a lot more. 2) My son collects pokemon. He doesn't play the game so well, but he loves learning about the monsters and collecting the cards. And when he pulls a full art foil mega Gx (or whatever they are called) from his pack, he goes nuts. Like nuts! And at some point when he;s older he may remember that day that he pulled that Gx from his pack, and may want to relive those memories and decide to buy some more packs. Nostalgia is no joke. But regardless, he will have that memory, and THAT is what WOTC needs to be in the business of making (not just pulling cards, but awesome gameplay, etc) Put these damn masterpieces in the packs. Adult collectors will buy those lottery tickets...and kids and newbies will go nuts when they pull one randomly from a pack. And maybe even one further, and just add alternate version chase mythics (and/or rares) in packs. That way they have a steady stream of masterpieces for each set. I dont know if this makes any sense. Definitely not as thought out as your vids. :)
just a thought, perhaps the marketing was towards the new players that are learning magic for the first time thanks to the guild of ravnica dnd book coming out. Could be cool to have super art foil cards to show the dnd players when you break out bolas or somebody for a boss encounter . ( be awesome if you could do a video about the book and match it up with cards for gm inspiration)
I like the fact that you went to the tcc intro that was almost exclusively used for MTA-Cast. It looks very "community College" nice choice. Also, a much better "opening" than bad boy mtg.
Putting laundry away as I watch. I go to take towels to the bathroom @ 13:00. "Giving away all 8 super art Planeswalkers" Turns around and drops towels. I'm listening...
Prof - I can see why someone might want the entire collection, but it would be really cool to pick 8 winners. If I am lucky enough to win, I will donate 7/8 cards back to you to give away individually. Love your channel, keep making great stuff!
Thanks for the thoughts Professor! I wish WotC would see the problems with distribution and change it in future. I'm just afraid they'll see, "oh, we sold out! Nothing to change here!" and ignore the fact that it was a limited print run (so OF COURSE it sold out) and the fact that the vast majority of their player base is upset with HOW it was done. 🤨☹
hey prof, one way you could take your delivery to the next level is you could practice reading your cue cards without moving your eyes. great stuff as always, god bless
Good work on the updated logo prof! Great content as well. Just keep the old logo in your pocket for some videos! Thanks for doin a great job for the greatest game!
I loved that little jab about shipping at the end! Well done Prof! Personally though, I feel like that art style makes me think their altered arts or something... just not a fan, definitely not for that pricetag! haha
Love the cards are how beautiful they look, but woah this situation..WotC KNEW it was going to be a disaster, so Mark had to say that (wow, really?) Leave it to the Professor to be a hero to all the people by his giveaway. Truly, a man of great character and dignity!!
I agree with this review. This would have totally been a fine product if you could pick it up at your LGS. If my LGS would have hosted a $30 premium draft where you randomly got one the of premium packs I would have been in.
10:12 I don't know much about the intricacies of digital sales, online event planning or credit card transaction software, but what the professor just described sounds more like a 2002 issue than a 2018 one. That is to say, "Haven't we (as a society) figured this out by now?"
This reminds me of the comic book crash of the 90's. Tons of foil covers to entice the ever growing collector's market... right up until it all came crashing down.
