Those layers you are packing down are called lifts, and yes, doing them in smaller layers will help in many ways.

Nice shed, why bring the dirt from outside the barn on the high side?

I like the shed and the mrs is right not big enough no person in history has built the correct size shed /garage always should of been bigger
