A foreigner’s perspective for what it’s worth. I’m British but lived in Japan for two years for work purposes from late 2010 to late 2012. While there I was lucky enough to get to know and socialise with a group of Japanese guys, who were all about my age - early thirties. They were totally cool. Outgoing, confident, modestly successful career wise etc. They really made me feel at home and they couldn’t do enough to help me find my feet. I was a bit clueless about living in Japan at first and needed all the help I could get. But after about a month I started to realise these guys mostly had no women in their life. Just one of the six men was in a long-term relationship but the others? Nothing. No wives, no girlfriends, zilch.... After about a month I worked up the confidence to tactfully ask them what the deal was In terms of their lack of female company. I was genuinely shocked by the response. The five single guys more or less said the same thing. That they’d tried dating years ago, kept getting knocked back, got embarrassed and demoralised by the whole process and gradually gave up on the idea of ever being able to have a proper relationship with a woman. Remember.....these guys were in their early 30s, not just teenagers. I tried to build up their confidence, telling them there was NOTHING wrong with them (which was true - these were not loner type gaming fanatics or anything) but I don’t think I had much success. It was like they were all traumatised or something. One of the guys later quietly admitted that he visited prostitutes once or twice a month, just to handle the physical side of things. He wasn’t boasting about it. He felt ashamed of doing it, and even hid it from his other Japanese friends. I think he only told me because of me being a foreigner. The crazy thing was that even the one guy who WAS in a long-term relationship wasn’t entirely happy either. He confided that he constantly worried his girlfriend would dump him. He told me he lay awake at night stressing about it. Guess what. He was dumped, several months after I’d left Japan. Today he’s still doing well career wise, but is still single and now expects he’ll never get the chance to be married or have kids. That’s just my personal, very limited experience of Japan and of some young Japanese men I knew there. I’m not saying it’s typical or a scientific survey of course!

This is Asia. We still get pride of being a virgin. And most of the elders are conservative. We don't bully someone because he/she is virgin. Even when we engaged to sexual intercourse, we don't inform the whole world and be so proud of it.

"Once you have children, there is a lot you need to tolerate." And THAT, gentle viewers, is precisely why lots of people shouldn't RUSH into having children. You ain't ready to have your patience, energy, finances, etc. monopolized by children? Don't do it. Parental love is powerful, but it won't cover everything.

I worked in the factory in Japan and befriended a TON of older women. We talked about everything together and they almost ALL had the same thing to say about sex. After children, you “graduate” sex, meaning they no longer had the desire to have sex once they had kids. TBH their husbands were ALWAYS gone and many were not helpful. But I don’t blame them. These women grew up thinking EVERYTHING in the household was their job to take care of and they just felt like sex was a burden. I totally get it.

In my country, people who have no jobs still manage to have atleast 4 children. It even goes higher to the people living in slums/ squatters area.

I don't understand why some people think that not having sex somehow makes someone less human or makes their opinion less valid. Besides there are things that are much more important than whether peoples genitals are touching.

Great topic! I like what this female had to say about women after taking maternity leave in a corporate environment @ 5:05. It makes so much sense that it feels kind of sad at the same time. Japan needs to implement certain policies that would enable Japanese families actually have pursue a family life while being gainfully employed in the workplace.

Me Japanese being in an European country feels that dating and public affection are considerably easier than you try them in Japan. We need to hide love-related things and behaviours, that could be one of the reasons for the dating & sex rate decline

In my country Having a child is an achievement. Like u are miserable without having one. I see people like jobless and have 2 to 5kids.

Concerning the low birth rate, I believe it to be a consequence of Japan's ultra-individualism. Like the video said, people just don't want the responsibility. I don't think the data is accurate. 40% should be people that are single not virgins. As for if the government has the money to help people having babies (paternity leaves, better maternity leaves, financial help,...): yes, a thousand times YES. Polticians try to convince their population that they can't (mostly due to their links to corporations), but the third economy in the world has enough money for it.

Amazing that the dynamics of relationships and the values behind them are the same everywhere.

That girl at 2:50-3:00 is my hero. She said something no one usually does. It’s harder for guys to get girls and guys are made fun of for being virgins like “haha dude you’re such a loser no girl has done it with you?”. It’s a sad reality and happens not just in Japanese society. It’s weird cause everything nowadays based on someone’s sexual experience seems to define whether they’re cool or not
