I had Cobol, 2 semesters before graduating in 1983. In masters program I took a senior grad program in Cobol in 1999 and did a paper of the survivability of Cobol and concluded that it will be around for a while. I have heard stories of OOP Cobol and other innovations, but never really followed up on it. I am thinking of adding Cobol to my skills (C#,Javascript,Typescript, Laravel(PHP),Node,Angular,React etc) as I am 65 and trying to move back into software, webdev, machine learning. I figure I have nothing to lose.

This might open new avenues to you, since it's someitmes more expected from Cobol programmers to be of a more senior age, while it is not as expected when working with Node or React, and not as expected for PHP.

@StefanMischook I agree with you in the last point regarding the transferability of knowledge from one programming language to another. The only major differences between programming languages are their respective syntaxes and/or the paradigms in which they fall (i.e. imperative or declarative).

Coding in Java is like driving at a steady 45mph. Sure, it's not incredibly fast but you will get to your destination in a reasonable amount of time. Now, when I code in Python I feel like I am driving at 120mph but the problem is I am going so fast, I can't dodge all the potholes coming my way and sooner rather than later I will crash head first into a tree. So, I will stay with Java and enjoy the ride.

I like Java, I like C# more, I also like Python, and Go, and … whatever gets the job done effectively, all of them have their place in the industry, you just need to know how to pick the right tool for the job. If you don’t know how, pick what you know and continue learning.

Additionally, if you maintain a well-structured codebase where each layer, such as service , controller and repository is fully isolated, adding new features will be very smooth and efficient. However, many people struggle with structuring their projects effectively, which is why things tend to become messy as the project grows.

Last year I was applying for jobs and I was amazed to find out that Javascript and React are virtually synonyms on Linkedin. Most of the backend jobs were related to Java or C#. I ended up with a frontend job but ironically I was allocated right away to a python team doing LLM . Who would guess?

In reality it s a great solution for big AND small companies and one of the best language (if not the best) if you want to be able to maintain your code base in the long run. The language has evolved a lot since java5 in 2000, the ecosystem is huge, many java dev on the market, it's mature and fast...

Yes that's why Linus skipped C++ for kernel development and brought in Rust as the second language . In general I dislike languages that introduce syntax based on whatever the current fad is, this is why C++ and C# both has legacy syntax. Java did this to lesser extent. C++ introduce more syntax on top of C without any technically meaningful improvement, OTOH Rust adds more syntax but it addresses memory safety issues and adds a comprehensive build and package manager (Cargo). C# has also painted it self into a corner by following fads, special syntax for getters and setters, green threads etc.. For example Java introduced virtual threads that works across functions, but C# is now unable to introduce a similar feature because they have colored functions baked into the syntax.

This is a weird take. Java can’t be the new COBOL because COBOL was never anything like Java. Apex is the new COBOL. Go and Python are the new Java. Java is now ‘the Old Java.’ It’s still absolutely everywhere. Facebook and Google still have several backend services and tools built with Java. Android Apps are basically all Java. If you’re a new programmer, then Old Java jobs will be easier to find. If you’re a brilliant programmer with no job experience, then you’re going to be the new kid constantly reminding senior engineers you know zero Java.

Aint happening. Java has Enterprisish stuff, Oracle, ERP SAP, and Java beans, and heavy objects to choose from. COBOL stuck because so many IBM APIs and tools were available not to mention technical debt keeps enterprises to ancient software they do not want to pay to upgrade which is COBOL and Java. So maintenance for life is to use what is available already

I can't see that happening. If an organisation wants to move away from Java there is not much point in only moving to C#. I suspect it would be to move to a more modern language such as Go, Rust, etc.

@@adolfomartin5456 Microsoft has improved since Balmer and Gates left and is more open. c# and even powershell are being less tied to com/dom and win32 stuff. .NET core is multiplatform from the ground up and does no weird emulation hacks. It runs on Mac and Linux equally. Even Office 365 stuff now uses graph and rest apis where I can work on Macs to automate things. I am shocked. I would rank it as multiplatform now at this point. But Java and COBOL won for big enterprise support and API stuff. .net core is great for small to medium sized things but is not big nor mature yet with integrations
