I've seen Jimmy Page play live four times and each was more iconic and mesmerizing than the last he never sounded sloppy he sounded live. He's never been pre-programmed like a lot of guitar players today. He's a masterful musician and he'll always be special to me.

Jimmy Page is more than a guitar player,he's an innovative producer and composer and an influence for new musicians.Perfection is boring, his playing is always interesting.Remember, every version of Led Zeppelin is an improvisation,is always something new.He doesn't play note for note,he just flows with the feeling of the moment...sloppy? without a good technique you can’t fully play improvisation ideas born in your head. you may come up with some good new licks/phrases/solos, but without a technique you can’t make it come true. look at Steve Vai for example - he really is one of the best guitarists. Jimmy may be a good songwriter and composer but not a guitarist unfortunately.

@@louiscates6975 people doesn’t really care about the technical aspect of a guitar player. They’re not musically educated. They hear some cool-sounded guitar parts and think that he plays well, but they don’t hear a lot of mistakes and poor technique. I’m not saying that Page isn’t great musician, he may be one (if all the solos and guitar parts were written by him, and not by producers in studios), but he objectively can’t play guitar well, you can just listen to some of Led Zeppelin’s lives. While Page is undoubtedly one of the most influential guitarists ever....and one of my favorites. "Sloppy" would depend upon who you want to compare him against. For example, if you compare Jimmy to a Ritchie Blackmore or a Larry Carlton, most guitarist would likely say yes, Jimmy was sloppy. Curt Cobain....Jimmy was a precision expert. But neither would not make him any less of a fantastic inspiration to millions of other guitarists. Jimmy in my opinion is a guitar genius, sloppy or not, he is one of the most influential and recognizable players in the world. You can hear Jimmy in many, many of todays best players. I have not really ever thought of Jimmy as sloppy or precise, I have always thought of him as a legend.

JP is one of my guitar heroes because of the feeling he produces from his playing, especially his interplay with Robert Plant. Like Hendrix I get the impression that he plays out of his heart, his soul. That's what counts as it impacts audiences! So called technical playing can be refined, well executed noise with no feeling or emotion.

His playing is more loose than sloppy, he knew what he was doing when it came to approaching the guitar, the problem is today guitarists have become to egotistical and care about what others think about there playing ,which takes away from the magic of playing an instrument. You think jimmy cared about what people thought of his playing.... No! he had fun and kept reinventing his playing and that's why he was able to write those masterpieces.

“You can't overthink the music. Mood and intensity can't be manufactured. The blues isn't about structure; it's what you bring to it. The spontaneity of capturing a specific moment is what drives it.” -Jimmy Page I think he was sloppy live because he just went into a trance channeling emotions, not to mention drug use and being up sometimes 5 days at a time. However, the guy was one of the best session guitarists pre-Yardbirds and with that comes great discipline and there was no tolerance for sloppiness.

"Sloppy" is a relative term when it comes to Jimmy Page. Relative to what? Younger Page vs older, before hard core drugs to after, night to night? Specific song performance to specific performance? Consider 69-71... not a better guitarist on the planet in my opinion. Four albums put out in those three years. FOUR! Also, remember Page was the foremost session guitarist in London when he was a teenager. He could play A-N-Y-T-H-I-N-G. He brought all that knowledge with him. For comparison, Eric Clapton wants to play blues and that's it. He basically wants to be Robert Johnson. During those early Zeppelin years his live performances were legendary. Why do you think soooo many of their concerts were bootlegged? As he got older and the drugs crept in he got a little sloppily, however, you can find bootleg recordings of him from all the major tours (73, 75, 77 & 79) where the band was super tight, he was personally in a zone and playing in way anyone who knows even a little about playing guitar just watches in total awe of what he can play. And one last thing to remember is that, with few exceptions, Zeppelin never played a song twice the same way. I heard some one once say about Lynyrd Skynyrd "They are a great, well rehearsed band." Meaning they were great, but they played the songs exactly the same way every night, because that's what Ronnie Van Zant wanted. Bands like Led Zeppelin and Allman Bros just went with the flow. A Zeppelin concert could last from 2 hrs to well beyond 3 hrs. Page and the boys would get bored playing the same thing every night. That is part of the reason they chose to end the band, rather than continue with new drummer after Bonham died. You can't teach how to play the way they did live. It would be insulting to Bonham and an almost terroristic amount of pressure for any prospective new drummer. As far as Page being Sloppy, there are some performances that are better than others, but that's cause he's always in THAT PARTICULAR MOMENT.

I actually enjoy the resolution that comes out when he plays the recognizable lick /riff after like 5-10 seconds of mashing the fretboard, think of TSRT Since I've Been Loving You. I also don't think its on accident. I think Page was similar to Hendrix in that they were artists first before guitarists (as opposed to a Clapton/Beck, where every note was somewhat premeditated/rehearsed/practiced to make live version sound like studio ). I don't think Page or Hendrix were really concerned about nailing every note down perfectly, I think they were more into just winging it and seeing if they could create/find anything cool. I personally can't imagine going up on stage not knowing what I'm going to be playing, which leans me to believe that guys like Page/Hendrix are in a class of their own. It's not like they couldn't refine it in the studio so to me the slopp is in the name of art .

Yes you're right about Page's live guitar playing, its mysterious because he played so perfectly on The Song remains the same movie, especially the song remains the same track and the rain song. Also the no quarter track and dazed and confused, that violin bow part was so perfect its hard to believe when you watch all his other live performances. Maybe he rehearsed really well for the movie in 1973 because he knew it was gonna be used for a movie? Who knows? His recordings in the studio always sounds perfect with the allowance to do as many takes as he needs to. Carlos Santana is also perfect in the studio but live he's unpredictable because he doesn't like playing note for note. Joe Satriani always plays note for note live I'm sure about that. But I still love some of the work that Page has done, I guess he's amazing when he's amazing but crap when he's crap. But I still think he's a great guitarist for the great work that he has done regardless of all the sloppy crap that he's done...

I wrote this song not realizing how sloppy I was playing it and then when I tried to correct my notes to be more precise it sounded way different and I liked it better when I didn’t care if the chords were legit or not but I wasn’t sure if I was just post rationalizing what was easier for me to play in time as better because I could hear it more completely or if it just really worked for the song so I’m glad to know this is a real phenomenon and I’m not just shit at holding chord shapes (I am still shit at holding chord shapes but now it’s not as much of a problem). I'm not a guitar player and have never noticed Page's sloppiness though I hear people say it. He seems to take off into a world of his own when playing some of his live solos and you can tell he's feeling the music and feeling his way through it as he improvises. Jimmy and Curt both had relatively simple and tight rhythm sections (bass and drums), and (usually) no other guitar players in the band to play along with, which allowed them the freedom to carry the chords and melodies in a more “relaxed” way, and still sound good. Compare that to Alex Lifeson in Rush, who tended to be more precise because Neil and Geddy had more intricate parts that filled the space.

If there is a take away lesson to be learn it is to understand that Page and/or any of the greats developed their own sound by actually just being themselves. Sure they all had influences though at the end of the day they didn't spend their time learning someone else's style, they spent their time playing and making their own music infusing it with soul, feeling and their own technique but more importantly their inherent natural talent of being an artist even if perceived as "sloppy". Anyone that spends two years learning someone else's catalog is probably going to miss out on discovering their own sound potential. Music lovers will always gravitate towards songs that are based on feeling rather than perfect technique and those songs are the ones that stand the test of time.

An often overlooked fact, by a lot of people is that the origins of the blues had no rules. You will never find a pre 1940's blues guitarist who wouldn't be considered sloppy by today's standards. And yet they've inspired millions. I believe that is the legacy of a great musician.

Jimmy Page in 1977-1979 was sloppy as hell. Some of his early performances in 1970-1972 were awesome, I was surprised listening to some of these bootlegged shows, he played fast licks that weren't sloppy on good nights, I had no idea he was actually THAT good as I only saw the famous 1973 and 1975 concerts.

Interesting assessment. From a recorded music stand point, accuracy, precision and timing are vital... It has to be the "best" performance, but to keep the energy, you can't play it a 20 - 30 times and expect capture the emotion. I also take your point about the live performances.... I had nine (9) bootleg Led Zeppelin albums, bought at a flea-market in Amsterdam which I was in raptures about finding... They were all recorded off the back of the desk, or using hand-held mikes and tape recorders around the auditorium,... and they were total crap.... seriously un-attractive. It may have been Jack Daniels, or Colombian marching dust,... or just tiredness,... but it was easy to see why Zeppelin didn't want their live recordings released without studio "polishing"... The variability of playing live music means, some nights you're a god,... and some nights, you're a dog. But there's still only one Jimmy Page.

I wouldn't describe his playing as "sloppy". I think "loose" is more accurate. He played what he felt and when he was on live tours he'd either be on drugs or hasn't slept in 4 days. Any guitar player would sound "sloppy" in this situation... except Page I guess lol he still managed to make it iconic

Define what you mean by sloppy. I have listened to Page for years. He has a definite style and sound that he is known for. All the greats do. But I do not no what people mean by sloppy. I have rarely heard him play a bum note or a ghost note. He does do a truckload of improvisation when he plays live. His live playing sounds like he employs a general framework with cues for the rest of the band but like most improvisation, a player has no idea where he is going until he gets there and when Page does that, it is magic.

Jimmy pages sloppiness contrasted with Jerry Garcia’s style is pretty interesting. JP’s live stuff is compared to the studio recordings. The Grateful Dead stuff it just sounds like it’s being played fresh in the moment as it’s own thing but the execution is surprisingly tight. It’s a different kind of sloppy. Idk what I’m trying to say. There’s just something there.

“Sloppy” really is the wrong word. I’d say.. Organic, Human, Natural, Real. - And while, impressive, admirable and welcomed, all Guitar-Robo-Shredatrons kinda sound the same.. like they are stuck in the Communist world of musical expression “cliché and cold”. -On the other hand, Page .. like most of the original guitar hero’s, breathed life and humanity into his guitar playing… something which is seemingly lost these days. -It’s essentially Spirit vs Intellect .. (I choose spirit)

Jimmy Page himself said that he doesn’t have a good technique, but makes up for it in attitude. I think he was sloppy live because the Les Paul was slung so low. I’ve heard him play difficult passages on the acoustic and not miss a note, but then he’ll muff up a simple pentatonic run on the Les Paul..

We're too aware, and unforgiving of faults today, beautiful things come from mistakes, sloppy playing, accidents. You need technique, and mastery tho,(Page always had these things but there were other variables involved when he played) if you want to go further than getting lucky with the right combination of timing, band mates, and playing can bring you. It's an unfortunate side effect of access to information. Listen to Robert Plant, he didn't stick to the script either, it was rare in that era that anyone stuck to proper notation of their music at live events. Some of it had to do with giving the audience a unique experience, the rest was drugs, ego, influence, and lack of discipline. We're lucky they did what they did, it's a reminder of what it's about, not fame but putting yourself out there, and being vulnerable, in order to get across whatever you're trying to say. You don't always feel the same, why play the same? That's what I've always gotten from it anyway.

When at 15 I was under the tutelage of the one of the finest instructors in Chicago. I was a big Hendrix fan and during warm up I was alone in the studio playing some jazz piece when my instructor came rushing in and said stop. He said it so sternly I thought I had gotten his daughter pregnant. He asked me who had I been listening too and of course Hendrix. He glared at me and told me to stop listening to him because he was sloppy and tuned down 1/2 step. The story goes on for about four years, but it is too long for this site.

No, there's no such thing as good Sloppy. A friend of mine once said to me after I had played a gig and we had issues with almost everything like cables and backline but we did play our hearts out but the public confuses technical issues with musical proficiency, my friend said - "Look Mike, forget about it, you played great it just so happens that it was a bad night, forget about the audience they don't know a guitar from their A-hole, if it had been a Prince concert Prince could have literally walked on stage, pulled down his pants, taken a dump on stage and walked off and everybody would go wild" ... And ya know what? He's right. There is no such thing as "Good sloppy" you see any sloppy player and you'll go this guy isn't good...BUUUUT since it's Mr. Page then we must reevaluate the situation and I guess his sloppy solos are good??? Hi, I have been listening and playing Led Zep since I was 15 and ... I'm over 50. Jimmy Page is not sloppy. He is just like any other blues oriented musician. He improvise a lot. He tries different things live. Now we are able to here them on youtube and other site, but 40 years ago except if you bought all the bootlegs (and they we're not cheap to buy 50$ +), this was not possible. Now we can say, well that show at MSG in 1977 was not that great, not back then. Led Zeppelin almost never played a song the same way. But for the quality of his playing, well, up until 1973 was great but after that it was so so. When you do a show and you haven't been sleeping for 3 days humm ... Drugs and stardom have a lot to say. Many guitar player are better then him. They play note for note and they play fast but, none of them have been able to compose songs that touched generations and still do.

Page shoots for feel and emotion over technical. I find people playing Zeppelin licks perfectly actually borring--like a shell of what it's really about-- the emotion and feel. As a band they lived on the edge of improvisation. Learning how to improvise is the hardest part of music-- it goes with overall ability to craete on the spot. Learning something note for note is actually pretty easy. with all the resources on the internet these days.

Well, you don't really define "sloppy." Someone below suggested that Page plays "loose," but not sloppy, and I'd agree with his suggestion. One thing you are probably to young to know but maybe not if you really studied Jimmy. From like 74 on his left hand was hurt several times he broke one of his fingers in 75 at an airport and there were other weird accidents. He played the 75 n 77 tour's with a hurt left hand and it is documented. If you listen to some bootlegs from 68 thru 72 his playing was much tighter for lack of a better term. Also his stuff in the 90's with Plant n Page as well as the Black Crows was tight. He also had a bad heroin addiction from 76 to the early 80's. In my humble opinion Jimmy might not have been the tightest guitarist but he was definitely the most innovative and original guitarists of them all. LED ZEPPELIN THE GOAT!!!

The level of sloppy depends on what you've snorted or shot up with like he did, especially live. The albums had to be precise. Live, he was totally high. Look at any videos he's in years later....he's constantly wiping his nose. When I learned Zeppelin songs, I learned the song...not the player. A long time ago, someone once told me "You could play Jimmy Page's rig, and STILL not sound like him...because you'll never get 2 critical pieces of the puzzle....his hands." So I never tried to emulate his exact sound, or style. I've played in bands, and trust me when I say if you're playing in a bar, and the crowd is hyped, and is drunk enough.......nobody notices things like that. They know the song, and they're getting into it, and you're doing a good job - mission accomplished.
