This controversial question comes up over and over again on a variety of jump rope message boards so we thought we'd tackle it head on.
The short answer as to whether jumping rope is bad for your knees is "it depends" but the more optimistic answer is "no" provided you adhere to certain guidelines. And if you do experience knee pain while jumping rope it's best not to self diagnose. Consider seeking the opinion of a qualified medical professional such as an orthopedist or physical therapist.
In this video we're going to look at the 6 main culprits that can have an adverse impact on your knees, namely:
1) technique
2) volume
3) surface
4) footwear
5) strength
6) rope selection
And if you’re looking for a mat to dampen your impact we love this one from Dollamur: dollamur.com/f...

I've been having knee pain for about 3 days now after jumping rope, and I watched a bunch of videos about it, but this one was by far the best. Thanks.

My story: first week of July I jumped daily for a week on hard concrete, causing some serious knee issues, apparently patellar tendonitis (self diagnosed). 3 months later it is just starting to heal after I hiked too much in August and September (activities I had committed to). I normally jump on a 3/4" thick horse stall mat at home, but I was travelling. This issue is often called "Jumper's knee" and is common in basketball and volleyball players. Haven't jumped rope since the injury, and I am probably weeks or months away from being able to jump again. I think your 6 main culprits are spot on, and I violated the volume (jumped every day with no rest days), surface (concrete) and footwear (Five Fingers) rules at least. FWIW.

That was my concern, possible knee damage. Lots of good information to take on board from this video, essential for an older newbie!
@PunkRopeNYC

A very valid concern! As we get older, we tend to do more side swings and less long jumps. Trying to work out smarter not necessarily harder.

The area of my tibia on both legs hurts somewhat after several days rope jumping. And also I’ve identified that my left arm is higher than my right arm when I watch my recording and that’s why I trip so much
@PunkRopeNYC
@PunkRopeNYC Год назад
Hi Luis! Those are two very important observations. It would be interesting to see if you have less pain if you cut back on your jumping. Maybe add a rest day in between each jump day. Do you ice your legs? Also good that you identified that your left arm is higher. See if you can balance your arms out and if that results in less tripping.

Hi Luis! Have a great visit with your son and hopefully you’ll feel much better after resting for a week. In addition to taking time off some people find that occasionally using ice, heat, and anti inflammatories can help.

Tim, good to see someone wearing Inov-8 shoes. what model Inov-8 do you wear? I wear the F-Lite 260 knit. Don’t think they are too well known in U.S. since they are a UK company, but I like them a lot.

I have only 3 question for you please tell me 1) Everyday skipping exercise good for knees ? 2 ) Skipping exercise is a HIIT exercise ? 3 ) At any age can be done skipping exercise ?
@PunkRopeNYC
@PunkRopeNYC 3 года назад
1) It depends on the current condition of your knees as well as many other factors but in general I would not recommend skipping every day. 3-4 times a week should be ideal. 2) Skipping can be HIIT but it depends on how you structure your workout. Skipping can also be traditional aerobic exercise. 3) We’ve trained people in their 80s to skip. Age alone is generally not a limiting factor.

Might be a bit of a cheeky ask but I'm just starting skipping as cheap cardio, I only have concrete or grass to jump on- are there cheaper mat options or is it pointless to cut corners here?
@PunkRopeNYC
@PunkRopeNYC 3 года назад
It’s a valid question but if you’re going to use a mat at all (we don’t by the way) it’s probably pointless to cut corners. If you have no orthopedic issues and good technique and good sneakers and you progress your jumping volume sensibly you should be ok without a mat.

@PunkRopeNYC
@PunkRopeNYC Год назад
At age 67 it’s not surprising to feel knee pain after jumping rope or any intense activity for that matter. 67 years is a lot of wear and tear on the joints.

Is a half pound PVC rope good for 59 year old beginner?
@PunkRopeNYC

Hi Andy! Yes that’s typically a good weight for a beginner as it will give you plenty of sensory feedback and help you develop your timing and rhythm.

I have been jumping for 3 days now, I train for around 2-3 hours a day I self checked my form and everything looks fine, but I feel really really sharp pain on my back( i jump on concrete and with footwear that isn't squishy at all) what should I do?
@PunkRopeNYC
@PunkRopeNYC Год назад
Hi José! Safety always comes first. If you feel sharp pain anywhere, especially in your back, it’s important to stop and give your body a chance to heal. In general, it’s important to wear supportive footwear with good cushioning. If you’re jumping on concrete you’ll want to take breaks and not jump for too long.
